Whisper the Wolf is a major character in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. She is a founding member of the Diamond Cutters, a Restoration rapid-response team.
Her Good Ranking[]
What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- Whisper was once the scout for the Diamond Cutters, an elite anti-Eggman mercenary team that helped fight Dr. Eggman during the Eggman War.
- Upon meeting Mimic, she is impressed by his ability to shapeshift and asks if he would like to join the Diamond Cutters.
- When Smithy gives the other Diamond Cutters masks, she agrees with Mimic that they’re beautiful gifts.
- She cared about the original Diamond Cutters like family, and was heartbroken when Mimic and Eggman got them killed. She also cares deeply about her Wisps that were once part of the team as well, being furious when Surge absorbed them.
- Even after the other Diamond Cutters died, Whisper kept fighting as a solo hero and helped the Resistance from the shadows on many occasions, earning the nickname “Guardian Angel.”
- When Sonic and Silver infiltrated one of Eggman’s old bases, she secretly helped them against the base’s Badniks before revealing herself. While startled at first, she happily introduces herself to them and helps them defeat E-107 Theta, thanking the duo for their help.
- While she wanted to smash an Eggman computer terminal she found, she agreed to stand down so Sonic and Silver could secure the vital intel on it.
- Despite not liking crowds, she came with the Restoration to Angel Island to help defeat Neo Metal Sonic, and was quite helpful in distracting Master Overlord by damaging his wings while Tails got his plane ready.
- She went to Spiral Hill Village to visit Tangle, who she had acquired a liking to after they worked together on Angel island, where she was introduced to Jewel.
- After the Babylon Rogues robbed Jewel’s mineral museum and accidentally kidnapped Jewel, she worked together with Tangle to stop them and get on their blimp.
- When Jewel was thrown off the Babylon Rogues’ blimp by Storm, Whisper saved her, not wanting to lose another friend. When Tangle jumped out, Whisper held onto her as well and used the Hover mode of her Wispon for a slow descent. Afterwards, she fist-bumped Tangle’s tail.
- Upon learning that Mimic was still alive and causing trouble while impersonating Sonic, she confronted “Sonic” and discovered his true identity before overpowering him and following him to Spiral Hill Village.
- While she attempted to shoot Mimic with her Wispon in Spiral Hill Village with the intent to kill, Whisper went out of her way not to shoot any innocent civilians.
- When Tangle attacked Whisper after being tricked into thinking Mimic was Sonic and Eggman was mind-controlling Whisper, Whisper reluctantly fought back, but did not use any lethal force. Afterwards, she explained to Tangle that it was not Sonic she had been pursuing and she had not been mind-controlled, showing her a recording of her talking to Mimic impersonating Sonic and taking her to Jewel’s Mineral Museum to properly explain who Mimic was.
- After getting a note from Mimic asking her to meet with him, she goes to do so and end things once and for all. While she was reluctant to bring Tangle along at first since she didn’t want her to get hurt, Whisper ultimately agreed after some encouragement from her Wisps.
- After learning Mimic had taken Tangle and was impersonating her, Whisper demanded to know where Tangle was, hitting Mimic and getting him to reveal that Tangle was locked in a safe and the building was set to explode.
- She chose saving Tangle over revenge on Mimic, freeing her from the safe.
- While Whisper initially wanted Tangle to go home after their failure to defeat Mimic, she made it clear that Tangle was not a failure and it was because she couldn’t lose another friend.
- After being comforted by Tangle, Whisper agreed to tell her about her past and showed her recordings from the Diamond Cutters masks, and then admitted that Tangle was the first real friend she ever had after losing the Diamond Cutters and didn’t want to lose her too. The duo then vowed to get revenge on Mimic and lure him out to them with a message.
- When Mimic was about to kill Tangle with his knife, Whisper knocked it out of his hands and saved her, and fought Mimic until Tangle eventually ensnared him with her tail.
- Despite having a perfect opportunity to kill Mimic with her Wispon, which he would have completely deserved, Whisper ultimately decided not to after Tangle said she would have to live with that for the rest of her life and that making Mimic live with the shame of losing would be a worse fate for him.
- When Whisper’s Blue Wisp left her Wispon after Mimic pointed out how the Wisp hated violence and asked if he was going to let Whisper use him as a weapon, Whisper was not mad at all, comforting the Wisp afterwards and saying she didn’t blame him a bit.
- Her and Tangle then took Mimic to a cell in Tails’ lab, where he would soon be transferred to the Everhold Prison. She said her goodbyes to Tails and Tangle, asking Tangle if she wanted to come with her and fight against Eggman and completely understanding when Tangle wanted to first take some time off at home.
- Her and Tangle accompanied Tails on a mission to try to make a cure for the Metal Virus in Central City, and then helped survivors get aboard a rescue shuttle.
- She helps Sonic barricade a horde of Zombots inside a building by using her Wispon to cut down a lamppost.
- Upon learning Tangle had been infected and stayed behind so the Restoration could escape, Whisper was absolutely heartbroken and tried to run back into the city to save her.
- While she attempted to kill Eggman with her Wispon on Angel Island, she refused to fire when Cream got in the way of her shot, and ultimately stood down when Cream said that as much as she understood why Whisper hated Eggman, he was the only chance they had at saving everyone who was infected.
- She went with Silver to go after Zor and shot him with her Wispon, knocking his Chaos Emerald off of him, which they then brought back to Angel Island. Because of this, Sonic and Silver were able to go into their Super forms and cure all of the Zombots, making Whisper very important in ending the Metal Virus.
- Even when Tangle was a Zombot, Whisper still couldn’t bring herself to hurt her, and gave her a big hug after she was cured.
- She attacked Zavok with her Wispon when he still tried to attack the heroes, and also shot Metal Sonic when he impaled Gemerl, which unfortunately did nothing due to the robotic hedgehog’s Black Shield.
- She attended Tangle’s party in Spiral Hill Village, helped fight Eggman when he attacked in his Giga Omega robot, and took part in the group hug when Sonic returned.
- She helped Sonic fight the Deadly Six by firing at them with her Wispon before Zavok disabled her mask and Wispon.
- Upon learning Mimic had escaped the Everhold, Whisper decided to leave the Restoration for a while so her friends wouldn’t be in danger. While she later realized this wasn’t the best idea, it was understandable since Mimic specifically wanted her dead above anyone else and she already lost Tangle once to the Metal Virus and likely didn’t to suffer through that again, and eventually apologized to Tangle for it.
- She saves Jet from a Super Badnik, even though it was partially his fault that it grabbed him. While she yelled at him to be quiet, it was because he was being obnoxious and she was trying to focus on saving him.
- When Surge went on a rampage in Central City, Whisper tries to stop her by fighting her with her Wisps.
- While Whisper tries to stab Surge with a shard of her Wispon after having most of her Wisps absorbed, it was in self-defense since Surge was about to kill her.
- Even after being injured and losing most of her Wisps, Whisper still helps Sonic against Surge by giving him her Cyan Wisp.
- Her and Tangle join a new team Lanolin puts together to investigate Eggperial City.
- While Whisper is angry that Tangle suggested that they name their new team the Diamond Cutters, which Lanolin accepts, it’s understandable since she doesn’t like being reminded of what happened to her old team, and she forgives Tangle after the lemur apologizes and says that she didn’t realize how insensitive it was and just wanted to be close with Whisper like her old teammates and not drift apart again. Whisper then realizes she’s been pushing away people who have been trying to help her, and apologizes for being a bad friend and teammate, even though she had plenty of moments of being a great friend and teammate, and assures Tangle and Lanolin she’ll be patient with them.
- While transparent, she goes with Tangle and Lanolin to the central control tower of Eggperial City to gather information, but is ultimately spotted and trapped in one of Eggman’s Spatial-Displacement Traps.
- After being freed from the Spatial-Displacement Trap by Tails, Whisper hits Eggman with her Wispon, freeing Tangle from his grip and saving her life. She then used her Wispon’s Hover mode to escape the control tower with Tangle and Lanolin in tow.
- After Tangle grabbed Sonic with her tail, Whisper grabbed onto Tangle used the Rocket mode of her Wispon to launch the three of them into the air, where Tangle was then able to launch Sonic into the control tower to destroy it, destroying Eggperial City and saving the world from it.
- When Duo asks if he can join the new Diamond Cutters, she’s impressed and welcomes him to the team, unaware that the cat was actually Mimic.
- She lets Silver train with the Diamond Cutters.
- After their training session went awry when Silver tripped and dropped the boulders he was lifting, Whisper met with him later that night and told him that she saw Duo kick him. When Silver says that Duo’s eyes changed color, Whisper realizes that he’s Mimic and says they’re going hunting.
- While Whisper wanted to attack Duo to get him to blow his cover since she thought he was Mimic, it was completely justified because he really was Mimic and she didn’t have any physical proof of his identity since she had stopped recording things with her mask, not to mention she had very good reason to believe he was Mimic. She also wanted to gather proof before she did anything, a plan that was derailed by Silver.
- While Whisper tried to push Lanolin out of the way when she got between her and Mimic, she wasn’t actually trying to hurt her and was just trying to get out of the way so she could expose Mimic, only really fighting back when Lanolin slams her into the ground.
- When Duo didn’t fight back against Silver and was seemingly injured, Whisper cries because she thinks he’s innocent now and votes to kick Silver out of the Diamond Cutters because she doesn’t want to mislead him anymore. Afterwards, she felt as if she couldn’t trust herself, so she started recording things with her mask again because she could trust what was recorded on there.
- While Whisper refused to trust Surge when she joined the Restoration after an apparent change of heart and initially didn’t want her to be able to join the Diamond Cutters, it was completely justified considering not only what Surge did to her and her Wisps the last time she met, but also that Whisper was right and Surge was secretly working for Clutch. Furthermore, Whisper specifically says she only won’t trust Surge, showing that she’s neutral towards Kitsunami, since he wasn’t around when Surge attacked her in Central City.
- Along with the other Diamond Cutters, she works as one of the referees during the Clean Sweepstakes.
- She uses her Wispon to blast Sonic, Tails, and Amy’s boards to save them and prevent a pileup, and is shown not approving of Lanolin’s harsh treatment of them.
- When Lanolin breaks part of the track trying to catch the Phantom Rider and causes some of the racers to fall off, Whisper saves some of them using her Wispon, as do Tangle and Sonic.
- While Whisper attacks Surge during the third event of the Clean Sweepstakes, it’s only because Mimic impersonated Surge and threatened to kill her and Tangle, and Whisper was acting in self-defense.
- Upon discovering Sonic is the Phantom Rider, Whisper shows Tangle footage she recorded on her mask, which shows that the Phantom Rider who attacked everyone was a different Phantom Rider than Sonic, who never actually attacked anyone, and vows to figure everything out with Tangle.
- Her and Tangle kept Sonic’s identity as the Phantom Rider secret to everyone until Jewel told them about Clutch. While they didn’t even tell Lanolin and Duo, it was understandable with Lanolin since she really hated the Phantom Rider and they were afraid of what she would do, and completely justified with Duo, who they still had suspicions about.
- During the final event of the Clean Sweepstakes, Tangle and Whisper plan to get in contact with Sonic to get his help dealing with Clutch.
- When Surge went after the Phantom Rider, Whisper tried to blast her with her Wispon to help Sonic.
- When Lanolin gets furious after learning that Tangle and Whisper kept the Phantom Rider’s identity from her, Whisper protects Tangle from her by getting between the two.
- When the Restoration Shuttle falls, Whisper goes with Sonic, Tangle, and Lanolin to save everyone and helps convince Lanolin that doing so is more important than her going after Sonic.
- After discovering Duo really is Mimic, her and Tangle pursue him as he tries to escape, only for him to get away.
- She helps guide the Restoration Shuttle so it crashes safely, and admits to Lanolin she’s made mistakes too when the sheep apologizes, recognizing how poorly she handled trying to expose Mimic and subverting her recklessness.
- When the Diamond Cutters end up disbanding, Whisper is okay with it since it’s on their own terms and everyone’s still alive.
- Her, Tangle, and Silver go to find Mimic and stop him, tracking him to Rainbow Ravine where they fight him and defeat him for good, allowing her to finally move on from her trauma.
- While the admirable standards of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise are high, Whisper manages to stands out for playing a key part in saving the world by helping cure the Metal Virus and destroying Eggperial City with only her mask and Wispon.
What Prevents Her From Being Pure Good?[]
- She is too lethal to be Pure Good, as she was willing to kill Mimic and Eggman with her Wispon on separate occasions and had to be talked down in both cases by Tangle and Cream respectively. She also thought the best way to expose Duo as Mimic would be to attack him to scare him into revealing himself and ended up fighting Lanolin when she got in her way, as well as being about to fire her Wispon at Mimic before he blew himself up. If she had killed Eggman during the Metal Virus arc, the heroes probably wouldn’t have been able to cure all the Zombots. She also actually did fire her Wispon at Eggman during the Urban Warfare arc, although it did nothing since she was transparent at the time. She also screamed at the crowd in the Ampitheater demanding to know where Mimic was.
- However, this is a minor prevention given how vile and dangerous Eggman and Mimic are, how she ultimately spared Eggman so he could help cure the Zombots, how she quickly regained her composure and helped evacuate everyone in the Ampitheater, how she tried to first gather evidence that Duo was Mimic before doing anything and attempted to get Lanolin out of her way as non-violently as possible before Lanolin escalated things by slamming Whisper into the ground, and how she ultimately didn’t fire at Mimic despite having an opportunity to do so.
Trivia[]
- Since the Sonic the Hedgehog IDW comics are ongoing, she could become Pure Good in the future if she subverts her lethality, which is quite possible now that Mimic is dead and she’s healing.
- She is the second IDW Sonic character to be Near Pure Good, with Tangle being the first.
