It's about damn time.
~ Hope to her father on getting her own Wasp suit.
I have wings. Why would I go low?
~ Wasp to Ant-Man.
Scott Lang: I just have one question, when Cap needed help, if I'd asked you, would you have come?
Hope van Dyne: I guess we’ll never know. But if you had, you’d never been caught.
~ Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne.

Hope van Dyne, also known as Wasp, is a major character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

She is a former board member of the company founded by her father, Pym Technologies. When the CEO, Darren Cross, attempted to create and sell a new weapon based on her father's Ant-Man Suit, van Dyne reunited with her estranged father and, along with a thief Scott Lang, stopped Cross. After these events, Pym offered Hope her presumed late mother's mantle as the Wasp. Following the Avengers Civil War, Hope assisted her father and Scott in finding her mother in the Quantum Realm and stopping Ghost.

She is portrayed by Evangeline Lilly. As a child, she was portrayed by Madeleine McGraw, who also portrayed the young version of Amara Namani.

Her Good Ranking[]

What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Good?[]

In General[]

  • Despite MCU's high admirable standard, she stands out for defeating Kang and saving the lives of thousands in the Quantum Realm.
  • While she initially started off with corrupting qualities such as arrogance and lethality, she manages to subvert that over the course of the movies.

Background[]

  • She cares about her mother Janet, as she was upset when she disappeared and supposedly died in the Quantum Realm.

Ant-Man[]

  • When she realized Hank Pym's protege Darren Cross was replicating his designs and intending to sell them to HYDRA, she asks Hank Pym to help her stop Cross.
  • While initially skeptical about Scott Lang, she later agrees to teach him how to punch and do other fighting moves.
  • She sends Scott Lang on a mission to find a device for their heist and when she saw him fight Falcon, she was impressed.
  • Recruits Scott Lang's three friends Luis, Dave, and Kurt Goreshter for their heist in Pym Technologies.
  • She defeats Cross's guards out of self-defense.
  • When Hank Pym was shot by Darren Cross, she gets him to an ambulance.

Ant-Man and the Wasp[]

  • Alongside Hank Pym, develops the Wasp suit and takes on her mother's mantle.
  • She learns from Scott Lang that her mother can still be alive and constructs plans on how to bring her back.
  • She kidnaps Scott only because she and Hank need him for their missions.
  • She was rightfully angry at Scott for being involved in the Avenger's fight in Germany.
  • When Scott told her about his dream about playing hide and seek with a girl, she and Hank become very happy, knowing that she is definitely still alive.
  • She goes on a mission to get one last compopnent for the Quantum Tunnel to stop it from overloading.
  • She asks Sonny Burch to give her that component she needed for the Quantum Tunnel, only for him to reject the offer, order his goons to kill her, and get defeated in the process as she steals the component.
  • When the Ghost steals Hank Pym's Mobile Lab, accompanied by Hank and Scott, she asks Bill Foster for help on how to track it.
  • While she did tease a small Scott Lang, whose suit malfunctioned, she was only joking about it.
  • She gave him a hoodie as a disguise since he can't shrink.
  • She tries to get the lab from Ava Starr, only for her to get knocked out in the process.
  • After escaping Foster and Starr, she worked on fixing the Quantum Tunnel.
  • After getting arrested by the FBI, she uses the hairpin hidden in her mouth to free her and Hank.
  • Successfully defeats Sonny Burch and his goons and recovers the mobile lab.
  • After Ant-Man falls into the water, she saves him from drowning and kissed him passionately.
  • She hugs her mother after Hank Pym brings her back from the Quantum Realm.
  • She meets Scott's daughter Cassie Lang and the three watch a movie from a laptop in a shrunken car.

Avengers: Endgame[]

  • After being revived by Hulk, she joins the battle of Earth against Thanos and his forces.
  • Along with all the other female heroes excluding Black Widow, she assists them in helping Captain Marvel protecting the Nano Gauntlet after Spider-Man gives it to her.
  • When Tony Stark sacrifices his life in defeating Thanos and his forces, she kneels down and attends his funeral out of respect.

Between Endgame and Quantumania[]

  • Takes back her father's company, Pym Particles, and renamed it to Pym van Dyne Foundation so that she could use Pym Particles for global change.
    • This resulted in more trees being produced, more houses being affordable, and more production in food, which gives her a reward.
  • She officially becomes Scott Lang's dating partner.
  • She grows close towards Scott's daughter Cassie Lang and helps her research the Quantum Realm.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania[]

  • Along with Scott, bailed his daughter Cassie out of jail.
  • After getting sucked into the Quantum Realm, she plans on finding Scott and Cassie and bringing them home.
  • While she did become angry at Krylar and defeated him and two of his soldiers, it was only because he revealed that M.O.D.O.K was going to hunt for Scott and Cassie.
  • She rescues Ant-Man from the Multiversal Power Core.
  • She destroys most of Kang's fleet of ships headed towards her.
  • Alongside Ant-Man and Stature, they prepare to face off against Kang, only for her and the latter to get knocked out.
  • She finally passes the goodness zone by going back into the portal to rescue Ant-Man from Kang by shooting him and allowing Ant-Man to kick him into the Multiversal Power Core which consumed him and blew him up, therefore saving the lives of thousands of Freedom Fighters in the Quantum Realm.

What Prevents Her From Being Pure Good?[]

  • The MCU has a lot of admirable heroes, and due to this, she fails the admirable standards to people like Black Widow who stopped Dreykov and saved the lives of many women and Thor, who stopped two versions of Thanos from attacking Earth and Gorr from killing Gods. She also fails to Ant-Man, who used time travel to bring everybody back and Iron Man, who saved the whole world from Thanos. However, she did save the Quantum Realm from Kang, saving Ant-Man and the lives of thousands of freedom fighters in there which is enough for her to stand out, so this isn't too mitigating.
  • She occassionally has moments where she is lethal towards her enemies. However, she shows no sadism in them so this is a minor prevention.

Trivia[]

  • It is unknown whether or not her What If.…? counterparts would qualify as NPG or not, considering her first counterpart sacrificed herself to save the survivors from the zombies and her second counterpart redeemed Peter Quill.
