Verne is the deuteragonist of the 2006 DreamWorks film Over the Hedge. He is the leader of the family that RJ encounters to help him return the food to Vincent.
He was voiced by the late Garry Shandling
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- When he senses RJ's manipulations through his tail tingle, he tries to persuade the animals not to fall for RJ as RJ likely has selfish intent. (Which he technically did at the time.)
- Returned the food that RJ was going to give to Vincent back to the humans to stop the humans from wanting to kill them.
- When he and his family where captured by Dwayne LaFontant, he apologized to them for falling for RJ's trick and blamed himself for the situation.
- When he sensed that RJ came to the rescue by seeing that he shoved the food wagon on the road to make a stop and attack the verminator, he successfully convinced the others that RJ wanted to help them and allow RJ to come into the truck in order to escape Vincent.
- When RJ told him that he would sacrifice his life to save Verne and his family, Verne told him that he intended to take care of the whole family (meaning he saw RJ as part of his family now) and wanted to think of a different plan that didn't involve RJ risking his life.
- During the attempt to defeat Vincent, Verne used a fishing rod to save RJ so that he wouldn't get eaten by Vincent and successfully tricked Vincent, Dwayne and Gladys Sharp into being trapped and burnt by the Depeltor Turbo, saving his entire family from getting killed.
- Forgave RJ for everything he did to them and let him know that if he was honest about his debt to Vincent, Verne and the others would have helped him regardless and offered him a place in his family, which RJ accepted.
- He called out RJ, Bucky, Quillo, and Spike for recording a tape about taunting Hammy with boomerangs, telling them that this was a mean thing that humans did to others.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- He comes off as a jerk and a control freak when it comes to his friends' safety such as when he denounced his friends as stupid and naïve when ranting about RJ's deceitfulness and also showed too much envy about RJ being looked at as a great new leader. Though, given that he subverts these traits by the end, as well as feeling remorseful for his insults, it's unknown how much he has subverted these traits.
- He is a little wrathful, as he chased away RJ, Bucky, Quillo, and Spike with a hairbrush for recording him while he was naked, though this is somewhat justifiable.
