IceClimbers

What's The Work?

Ice Climber is a video game franchise, which was created by Nintendo, and Ice Climber won out over other video game series across the NES/Famicom and arcade era to include the titular main protagonists, Ice Climbers, as playable characters in the Smash Bros. series. The plot of Ice Climber follows the aforementioned Ice Climbers; Popo (the boy in blue) and Nana (the girl in pink), who seek to scale up to 32-48 glacial and giant mountaintops to recollect stolen vegetables for their home from a vegetable-stealing condor, who is responsible for it all. After conquering all mountains and collecting all of their stolen vegetables, Popo and Nana finally return home with their regained vegetables.

Who Are They?

The Ice Climbers are the titular main protagonists of the namesake franchise. The duo consists of an older twin boy dressed in a blue/indigo parka coat, Popo, and a younger twin girl dressed in a pink parka coat, Nana. When it comes to their relationship, the duo were widely believed to be siblings or twins at a minimum, but Nintendo said that the nature of their relationship is up to the player's imagination. However, Sakurai planned to have them in a romantic relationship in Super Smash Bros. Melee, but this changed into Popo and Nana being childhood friends, and with the conversation within Solid Snake's codec involving the Ice Climbers depicting Mei Ling mentioning that Popo and Nana having a blood bond.

Good Rankings

What Makes Them Close To Pure Good?

In general

  • The Ice Climbers have a blood bond to each other, a long-standing custom practiced around the world that involves a pair of distinct people swearing loyalty to one another.
  • Due to their relationship with one another, Popo and Nana have pristine loyalty and dedication to each other, promising to never leave each other behind, and have been typically and relentlessly reliant on each other for paramount and excellent teamwork, which is essential for heroism and justice, and to defeat the biggest and most dangerous villains (such as the Condor, Tabuu, Galeem and Dharkon).
  • While their reliance on each other for teamwork can give their enemies the advantage to separate the Ice Climbers from each other quite easily and threaten one climber, the other climber is capable of immediately returning to the corresponding climber and defend them from their enemies, saving them from their doom, further highlighting their heartwarming relationship with each other.
  • Although their cooperation with each other was questionable back in Ice Climber, this was wholly subverted/reformed in the end, especially in the Super Smash Bros. series.
  • The Ice Climbers are virtually devoid of corrupting qualities from both their own namesake franchise and the entire Super Smash Bros. series, making the duo among the only characters in the Smash Bros. series to lack corrupting factors in all aspects.

Their actions

Ice Climber
  • During the timeline of Ice Climber, the Ice Climbers have worked together and braved through the cold to scale the Infinite Glacier, the world's largest mountain, filled with several glacial and subsequently narrow mountains, where several Topis, Nitpickers and Polar Bears reside and attempt to antagonize the Ice Climbers during their journey, to collect and regain several stolen vegetables for their home and confront the vegetable-stealing and villainous Condor, thus the duo have stored several and countless stolen goods.
Super Smash Bros. series
Ice Climbers MK and Lucario

Thanks to the Ice Climbers, Meta Knight and Lucario are now friends.

Nana saving Popo

Nana saving Popo from falling to the bottom of the Icicle Mountain.

  • In Super Smash Bros. Melee's opening movie, Nana saves Popo from falling victim towards the bottom of the Icicle Mountain (even though she had all rights of leaving him to fall like in Ice Climber, where only one climber must reach the summit first), which is what started their huge and dedicated cooperation with each other up to this day.
  • In Super Smash Bros. Brawl's Subspace Emissary, the Ice Climbers scaled and climbed the Glacial Peak to access the Battleship Halberd (the latter of which is battling against the Great Fox) for the other heroes' assist instead of using the Halberd for their own ambitions, all while fending off a considerable portion of the Subspace Army along their journey, as well as from the canyon.
  • The Ice Climbers do not show even the slightest signs of grudge against Meta Knight and Lucario for boarding the Battleship Halberd and leaving the duo to fall down to the canyon after the Halberd crashed the Great Fox into the summit of the Glacial Peak, even though Meta Knight and Lucario had all rights to save the Ice Climbers and bring them along. Although this is because Lucario and Meta Knight are more admirable, the aforementioned two have far more resources than the Ice Climbers, with Lucario being a powerful Pokémon with Aura, and Meta Knight being a brave and dreaded swordsman with the ability to fly due to his wings, while the Ice Climbers are just little kids with hammermanship that combines with incredible jumping prowess and cryokinesis.
  • Upon reaching the summit of the Glacial Peak with Meta Knight, where Lucario challenges the latter while the Ice Climbers spectated in tension, Lucario and Meta Knight ended up teaming with and befriending each other in the Subspace Emissary and boarding the Battleship Halberd for the other fighters' favor instead of continuing to brawl with each other. This is thanks to the Ice Climbers' positive influence onto them, as the two would still continue fighting if it was not for the Ice Climbers watching the fight between them, which would have led to more chaotic consequences.
  • Upon falling to the canyon from the aftermath of the Battleship Halberd's interference with the Glacial Peak, the Ice Climbers teamed up with Lucas, Marth, Ike, Pokémon Trainer, Mario, Kirby, Yoshi, Pit and Link to defeat a considerable portion of the Subspace Army in the canyon.
  • The Ice Climbers have saved the world from Tabuu in the Subspace Emissary (Super Smash Bros. Brawl), as well as from Galeem and Dharkon in the World of Light (Super Smash Bros. Ultimate). Combined, the duo have saved the entire universe from domination twice, even if it endangered their own lives and during their own childhood.

What Prevents Them From Being Pure Good?

  • Despite their admirable actions done with quite a low number of resources (along with their positive influence to Meta Knight and Lucario), the Ice Climbers still fail the admirable standards to the Super Smash Bros. series to a fair degree. Examples include: King Dedede, who attached Dedede Brooches on Ness and Luigi to be resurrected to recover from Tabuu's off waves that turned everyone to trophies, Sonic, who shattered Tabuu's wings to prevent him from unleashing his off waves again, and Kirby, who survived Galeem's mass genocide and resurrected numerous fighters in World of Light. However, the Ice Climbers have far less resources than these aforementioned characters, so it is quite unfair to compare the duo to them.

Final verdict

A decent yes. Yes, they fail the admirable standards quite a bit, but the brilliance that comes from storing stolen goods (their vegetables), Nana saving Popo and the Ice Climbers offering Meta Knight and Lucario a positive influence is quite effective enough to raise their ranking to here.
