You know I'm 1,500 years old. I've killed twice as many enemies as that. And every one of them would have rather killed me than not succeeded. I'm only alive because fate wants me alive. Thanos is just the latest in a long line of bastards, and he'll be the latest to feel my vengeance. Fate wills it so.
~ Thor to Rocket Raccoon.

Thor Odinson is one of the main protagonists of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He is an Asgardian warrior-prince, the God of Thunder and a self-proclaimed protector of Earth. Thor subsequently became well known for his actions on Earth, which included acting as a founding member of the Avengers.

He is portrayed by Chris Hemsworth.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

In General[]

  • While Thor was initially hot-tempered, arrogant and even blood-thirsty in the first film, and even went to Jotunheim and getting several Frost Giants killed, nearly bringing Asgard to the brink of war, (in fact, in Loki's own words, Thor could have killed all of the Frost Giants with his bare hands) after being banished, he loses this side of him and his prejudice towards the Frost Giants.
  • During all his battles with Loki, he made sure to hold back in the hopes that his brother could be redeemed.
  • He is one of the only people capable of wielding Mjølnir, which can only be lifted by those deemed worthy by Odin, the God of Wisdom and ruler of the Nine Realms.

Thor[]

  • He supported Lady Sif in her quest to become a powerful warrior.
  • After being banished to Earth and being helped by Jane Foster, he thanks her for her support and kisses her hand in respect.
  • When learning that S.H.I.E.L.D. took Jane's equipment, he promises to get the equipment back for her.
  • Upon learning of his father's "death" and his banishment from being part of the truce with Jotunheim by Loki, he somberly accepts the news and thanks Loki for coming to visit him.
  • After being released by Erik Selvig and speaking with Jane the night before, he becomes more upbeat and makes breakfast for his friends out of gratitude.
  • When the Destroyer arrives, Thor evacuates the citizens.
  • During the fight, he convinces Sif not to fight back against the stronger opponent and live to fight another day.
  • He stands up to the Destroyer, speaking to Loki and apologizing for whatever he did that made Loki walk down this path while offering his life in exchange for the citizens of Puente Antiguo.
  • He defeats the Destroyer, saving the town of Puente Antiguo.
  • Upon returning to Asgard, he attempts to reason with Loki, openly expressing his refusal to fight him and only doing so when given no other choice.
  • He prevents the Bifrost from building up any further, sacrificing his only chance of seeing Jane again to save Jotunheim and the entire race of Frost Giants from extinction, subverting his prejudice of the species.

The Avengers[]

  • When he returns to Earth after learning of his brother's survival, he once again tries to reason with Loki to convince him to give up and return to Asgard peacefully.
  • Thor saves Black Widow from being killed by the Hulk and attempts to reason with Banner before fighting back.
  • He is angered and stricken with grief when Loki stabs Coulson.
  • While fighting his brother a second time, he continuously tries to reason with him and convince him to stop the war against the Earth.
  • Along with the other Avengers, Thor helps stop the Chitauri Invasion, saving New York City and many citizens in the process.
  • Played a major role in stopping Loki from destroying New York with Chitauri.

Thor: The Dark World[]

  • He saves the Nine Realms from the invasion of the Marauders and restores peace in the process.
  • When seeing that Jane Foster had bonded with the Aether, he takes her to Asgard to have her treated and have the Aether safely removed from her body.
  • He is saddened by his mother Frigga's death, and at the moment that she was killed, Thor furiously shoots lighting at Malekith and hits Kurse with Mjolnir, forcing them to retreat and call off their naval invasion of his homeworld. Even though he deformed Malekith in the process, he completely deserved to be deformed.
    • During the Time Heist in 2013, Thor reunites with her and tries to save her by telling her that she is going to be killed by Kurse.
  • Unlike Odin, Thor is not blinded by vengeance in the wake of Frigga's death, and convinces Heimdall to help him find Malekith and the Dark Elves himself instead of waiting for them to attack again, saving the lives of several Asgardians in the process.
  • After seeing Loki "die", he holds his brother in his arms and promises to tell Odin of his heroic deeds.
  • Thor defeats Malekith, saving the Nine Realms from being plunged into darkness and all of their populations from being massacred.
  • He attempts to offer his hammer to Odin as an act of humility (he doesn't know it's Loki in disguise, but his intentions count).

Avengers: Age of Ultron[]

  • He, along with the Avengers, manages to take down the last remnants of HYDRA, apprehending the scientist Baron Von Strucker and recovering the Mind Stone.
  • Thor attempts to reason with Ultron and convince him to maintain peace.
  • He helps create Vision by using his lightning to finish charging his body, then stops Steve from trying to attack Vision.
  • Thor assists in the operation to evacuate Sokovia, then destroys Novi Grad with Tony, preventing the city from falling to the Earth and wiping out the human race.

Thor: Ragnarok[]

  • He goes to Muspelheim and defeats Surtur.
  • After Odin's death, he is saddened by his demise and prays for his father and his journey to Valhalla.
  • When he reunites with the Hulk, he's relieved to see his friend still alive, and initially refuses to fight until Hulk gives him no choice.
  • While Thor did say to Hulk that Earth hated him, upon seeing how upset this made Hulk, he quickly apologizes, comforting him and telling him they are both very similar.
  • He convinces Valkyrie to assist him in saving Asgard and stopping Hela.
  • Through his words, Thor manages to make Loki realize he can be a better person and similarly gets Loki to help by rescuing all the Asgardians.
  • Upon seeing the murals showing Asgard's true history, he's shocked to see how bloodthirsty his father once was.
  • When meeting Hela once again, he sympathizes with her anger towards Odin and his deceitful personality.
  • He manages to help get all the citizens of Asgard evacuated and gets both Hela and Surtur eliminated.
  • He thanks his brother for his help, saying that Loki wasn't so bad after all and even wanting to hug him.

Avengers: Infinity War[]

  • He mourns the death of his brother after he's killed by Thanos.
  • Though initially angry upon learning Gamora is the daughter of Thanos, he instead sympathizes with her past and opens up about his own trauma of having to kill his half-sister.
  • He showed himself to be very friendly with Rocket and Groot, even telling the former details about his life.
  • He motivates Eitri to help forge Stormbreaker, then holds the iris open to heat the Uru and forge the weapon, nearly dying in the process.
  • He arrives in Wakanda, saving both Steve and Bruce from being overwhelmed by Outriders before proceeding to eliminate several of the monsters himself.
  • He feels incredible guilt for letting his desire for vengeance against Thanos allow the Titan to wipe out half of all life in the universe.

Avengers: Endgame[]

  • He says he likes Captain Marvel after she refuses to flinch from Stormbreaker.
  • He is the one to ultimately slay Thanos, decapitating him with his ax and avenging trillions of innocent people he had turned to dust.
  • Despite falling into a depression in the wake of the Snap, Thor still retains his compassion and justice and assists in the operation to retrieve the Infinity Stones to bring back everyone killed by Thanos.
  • He volunteers to wield the Gauntlet and snap his fingers to resurrect everyone, despite his health and current condition.
  • When Hulk is starting to feel pain from wearing the Gauntlet, he begs him to take it off so that he won't die. Only after Hulk says he is okay, does Thor give thumbs ups.
  • Upon seeing Steve lift Mjølnir, he is delighted to see that his friend was indeed worthy all along.
  • He faces off against Thanos and his army, personally fighting the Mad Titan multiple times.
  • Alongside all the other heroes, he takes a knee in respect to Tony with tears in his eyes, and attends his funeral to mourn him.
  • He decides to let Quill remain the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy instead of challenging him for the spot.

Thor: Love and Thunder[]

  • He travels with the Guardians of the Galaxy for at least a year, helping several planets across the galaxy.
  • He helps the Indiggarian people by taking care of Habooska the Horrible and his army, killing Habooska and saving the Indiggarians. After the battle, he doesn't take all the credit for the victory and insists it was a team effort. He also apologizes to King Yakan for accidentally destroying the planet's temple during his attack.
  • Thor doesn't agree to Nebula and Mantis' suggestion of putting down the two Indiggarian goats they'd received due to how difficult it was to control them.
  • He reluctantly parts ways with the Guardians of the Galaxy and shakes Quill's hand before leaving.
  • When he gets a distress call from Sif, he goes with Korg to help her and bring her back to New Asgard.
  • He helps the rest of the Asgardians fight against Gorr and his Shadow Beasts.
  • When the Asgardian children are kidnapped, he communicates with Heimdall's son, Axl. He instructs Axl on how to use his clairvoyance to let Thor see through his eyes, and comforts the children by assuring them he was building a team and they'd come for the children as soon as possible.
  • He goes with Jane, Valkyrie, and Korg to Omnipotence City to ask Zeus for an army to rescue the Asgardian children and defeat Gorr.
  • He expresses disgust at Zeus' selfish attitude and refusal to help in order to remain protected in Omnipotence City.
  • As they're going to the Shadow Realm, he rekindles his relationship with Jane. After she reveals she has Stage IV cancer and is worried about the future, Thor comforts her by reminding her she was worthy to wield Mjolnir, and that before he met her, Thor was unworthy. He reiterates that she made Thor worthy by teaching him there was no greater purpose than to help people.
  • He takes Valkyrie and Jane back to New Asgard after both of them get injured during the fight with Gorr.
  • When Jane wants to go with Thor to rescue the children, Thor tells her to stay since Mjolnir was draining her strength. He then professes his love to her and urges her to stay so they could build a relationship together.
  • He helps all the Asgardian children fight against the Shadow Beasts by imbuing them with his power, then returns all of them home safely.
  • He inspires Gorr to not use his wish to destroy all the gods and instead have Eternity bring back his dead daughter. With his losses and experiences with Thanos and the gods in Omnipotence City, Thor empathizes with Gorr's grief of losing a loved one and hatred of the gods.
  • Thor cradles Jane in his arms as she dies from cancer.
  • Thor adopts Gorr's daughter, teaching her how to use Stormbreaker and working together as heroes.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • Though he did learn from his mistakes after being banished to Earth, he still maintains some of his arrogance and snark. He also had a jerkish moment in Endgame, where he threatens Noobmaster, telling him to log off the game or he would rip off his arms and shove them up his “butt”. After which this calls the child to cry to their father, to which Thor showed no sympathy and called him a weasel, although this is minor since the moment was for comedy.
  • He has a side of brutality to him. Before leaving Sakaar, Thor throws the remote for the Obedience Disk out of Loki's range for trying to betray him, leaving him in a constant state of electrocution (although this is meant for comedic purposes). And he was extremely vengeful towards Thanos, painfully pushing Stormbreaker through his chest while sadistically reminding Thanos that he'd promised that he would die for killing Heimdall and Loki, thus enabling Thanos to snap his fingers and cause the Snap. Later, when the heroes find him so they could get the Infinity Stones to undo his actions and find out he destroyed the stones so the process can't be undone, he snaps and kills him by slicing off his head. Even the heroes was shown to be shocked by the latter, despite showing disgust at Thanos's actions.
    • Though one could argue all three moments are completely understandable, it's still too excessive for a character who would have been approved as Pure Good. He also never felt explicit remorse for them.
