Near Pure Good Hero Wiki

The King is a major character in Fallout: New Vegas. He is leader of Kings and de facto leader of Freeside. He is an anarchist who thinks that anyone can do anything that they want as long as it doesn't affect others in a negative way.

He was voiced by James Horan.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

  • After realizing how horrible the lives of Freeside residents are, he decided to try to make it a better place.
  • He uses other Kings as a makeshift police force to try and keep at least some order on Freeside.
    • We can even see sometimes how kings are fighting with Freeside thugs who are attacking either The Courier or other Freeside residents.
    • Some dialogues imply that they are also protecting it from bandits like Fiends.
    • It is also worth to note that he prefers peaceful solutions as shown in his quest.
  • He attempted to kick the Van Graffs (brutal weapon dealers) out of Freeside, but after few of his people were killed, he decided to let Van Graffs stay and ordered his people to keep distance from them, showing that he cares about his fellow kings.
  • While other Kings are often xenophobic, especially towards NCR refugees, it is not the case for King, because he never showed any kind of xenophobic behavior and he even showed to be friendly to everyone as long as they don't cause any trouble.
    • The closest thing he done to be xenophobic was not letting outsiders join The Kings, however if the Courier proves themselves, he will make an exception for them.
      • It is also worth to note that while he doesn't let females join his gang (with exception for the Courier if they are woman) it is not because he is misogynistic, but because Elvis Presley (the musician who the Kings are impersonating) was a man.
  • He treats his two groupies (lovers) good and is even taking them sometimes to Strip on dates.
  • While he is an anarchist who believe that everyone is king of their lives, he never exploited Freeside residents and doesn't tolerate acts of violence against them.
  • If he learns that the Courier is helping Freeside residents, he will send them gifts from time to time, ranging from food and water to caps.
  • During his first encounter with the Courier, if Pacer scammed Courier to give him 100 caps, King will return them and apologise for his friend's behavior.
  • He cares about his cyberdog Rex and after realizing that there is something wrong with him, he will send the Courier to the Followers to help his dog.
    • After the Courier will help Rex, King will be thankful and will even let him keep Rex for some time.
  • His first job for Courier is figuring out why Orris is the only personal escort hired by outsiders to protect them and what caused other guards to be unemployed.
    • After finding out that Orris was faking an attack on outsiders to play hero, he will order few of his people to kick him out from the Freeside.
      • If the Courier kills Orris instead, he will scold them for killing him but will still pay them for technically completing the job.
  • His second job is figuring out who is behind attacks on Freeside residents.
    • In this part of the quest, we can find out that he is respected by both Freeside residents and the FotA.
  • After finding out that the reason why they were attacked was because Freeside prospectors accidentally bumped into NCR soldiers who were secretly distributing food and water for NCR residents and learning that NCR sent a scout who was supposed to inform him about it and convince him to start distributing food for all Freeside residents, but the scout was brutally beaten by few xenophobic Kings before contacting him, he will immediately agree to negotiate with the NCR.
  • After learning that Pacer took a few of his loyalists with him and attacked NCR soldiers, he immediately sends the Courier to defuse the situation.
    • If the Courier kills NCR soldiers, King will be disappointed that they were killed, but will understand that the Courier didn't have any other choice.
    • If Courier convinces NCR soldiers to negotiate with King, King will help NCR distribute rations to all Freeside residents.
      • It is also implied that he forgave them for killing a few of his gang members because he understood that it was self-defense.
  • After completing his second job, he will let the Courier ask him for any favor.
    • It will be either helping them to get into the Strip, give them tons of caps, let them join the Kings or use it to convince them to stop violence between Kings and NCR.
  • In "Kings' Gambit" while he is rather hostile to the Courier in the quest finale, it is understandable, considering the fact that multiple NCR soldiers stormed his building and held him and other Kings at gunpoint.
  • If the Courier proposes to him to give Freeside food and water deliveries, he will agree and will stop violence between Kings and NCR.
    • If we don't complete his quest with allying NCR with Kings, some incidents will still happen, but they will be much rarer.
  • He tries to calm down Pacer and stop him from attacking NCR, after failing while he will be shocked that his best friend tried to kill him and take over his gang, he will still keep his end of the bargain.
  • If the NCR won and the Kings made peace with the NCR, he will make Freeside safer place and will keep some independence from NCR.
  • If Caesars Legion won, he, alongside his gang will try to stop them.
    • If the Kings and NCR were in hostile relations, he will refuse to join the Legion and after he, alongside his gang get taken as slaves, he will attempt to escape slavery with the other Kings.
  • If Mr. House won and the Kings aren't enemies with the NCR, he will die alongside other members of his gang while trying to defend Freeside from Mr. Houses protectron army.
  • If the Courier took over New Vegas, he will make Freeside the safest place in New Vegas.
    • If the Kings made peace with the NCR, Freeside will also become safe zone for NCR refugees.
  • While Kings attack NCR refugees in some of endings, it is more likely that they are working on their own considering the fact that King has nothing against the NCR as long as they don't affect Freeside residents.
  • Overall, the King stands out as one of the few people who cares about poor and junkies and try to protect them.
  • While Admirable standard of Fallout is extremely high, him trying to turn Freeside into a prospecting city and protecting it's residents who are mostly junkies and poor from bandits makes him pass the Admirable Standards.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • During "King's Gambit" in the quest final, he is too arrogant to completely justify it by the situation.
  • While he is against criminal activity, he is too indulgent towards his gang:
    • He is letting Pacer continue his criminal operations and doesn't react to his attack on NCR refugees, while it is understandable because they are childhood friends and King doesn't know about full extent of his actions, it is hard to completely justify him.
    • He won't stop xenophobic Kings from attacking NCR refugees in most endings, however he still will try to limit it in some.
    • Lets some of his Kings take over water wells and forcing Freeside residents to pay for water.
  • He punched a FotA doctor and knocked down one of the tables after learning that they aren't able to help Rex. However, they did tell him that Rex was going to have a slow and painful death and King barely remembers this event, implying that he was too stressed to think clearly. It is also worth noting that it is his only moment of wrathful behavior and he is embarrassed and ashamed of it during his talk with The Courier, making this a minor prevention.

Trivia[]
