The Cat, formerly a kid with the surname Lovat, is the overarching protagonist of the Coraline movie seen through Imaginago's theories.

According to them, the Cat was the very first kid to be lured to the Other World by the Beldam, dazzled by the illusion of a perfect life. Somehow, however, he escaped, just like Coraline, as the Beldam was still unexperienced, and dedicated his life to prevent children from falling victim of her. However, when one of his daughters got caught, he was consumed by sadness and moved away from there with his other daughter.

After his death, he reincarnated in the body of a Cat, and attempted to prevent other children from getting caught by the Beldam, unfortunately failing, causing two children to be captured by her. However, he also looked after his descendants, in current time being the pet cat and best friend of his great-grandson, Wybie Lovat. He would, however, help Coraline, the Beldam's newest victim, to outsmart and defeat the Beldam, as well as free her victims once and for all.

Considering the movie is still canon to the theory, he is voiced by Keith David who also voiced The Arbiter in Halo and Goliath in Gargoyles.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

  • While he was manipulated into staying into the Other World, he was a child and didn't know any better at the time.
  • He saw through the lies of the Other World and its Soul Dust and managed to outsmart the Beldam and escape.
  • After becoming a traumatized adult, he dedicated his life to protect his daughters. When one of them was caught, he got so sad he moved out, making the house be turned into a multi-apartment, the Pink Palace.
  • He, as a Cat, attempted to save two more children from the same fate of his daughter to no avail.
  • He is the pet cat and company to his lonely great-grandson, Wyborn Lovat, with the latter being unaware of the Cat's true identity.
  • He helps Coraline, although ominously, through clues, getting her to figure out the Other World is not what it seems.
  • He comforted Coraline when her parents were brainwashed into going missing.
  • He helped Coraline win the last game by killing a mouse with the Missing Child's soul in it.
  • He helped Coraline, although initially against his will as she threw him into the Beldam, fight against the Other Mother, clawing her eyes out, blinding the latter.
  • He forgives Coraline for what she did.
  • Although it is unknown why he came back to the Other World at the end, Imaginago heavily implies it is to make sure the Other Mother is destroyed, as when Coraline threw the key in the well, she unknowingly threw it back to the Other World.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • His behaviour is just like in the movie, as he is snarky, cocky and arrogant with Coraline, although it is a minor prevention as this version's motives and character are better known, and he is a close friend to Coraline.

Trivia[]

  • His movie version can't qualify due to being morally grey, as his nature and true motives to help Coraline against the Beldam are not known, thus, he can't qualify for Near Pure Good.
  • He is the only Coraline near pure good hero not to be from the movie, even if this version is mostly the same as the movie but with added information.
