~ Ford's final message at the end of Journal 3. |
Dr. Stanford Filbrick "Ford" Pines, Ph.D., also known as The Author, is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Soos Ramirez) of Disney's Gravity Falls franchise.
He is the twin brother of Stanley Pines. Despite having extremely different personalities, as Stanford was very intelligent, nerdy and the best-of-the-class, while Stanley was a boy who constantly got in trouble and had a reputation as both a delinquent and con-artist, they were extremely close and loved each other a lot.
He was mainly voiced by J.K. Simmons, and very briefly by the series' creator Alex Hirsch when he traded clothes with his brother to trick Bill Cipher.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- Although he refused to destroy neither the portal nor his journals out of pride of his work, despite knowing the dangers they could unlock, he thoroughly made up for it later by destroying the portal.
- His corrupting qualities, despite being still present, became nearly irrelevant during the final acts of the series. He also makes up for his misdeeds caused by his arrogance by apologizing to those he wronged.
- Despite being very serious, even for a children's entertainment show, he is still taken lightly.
Background[]
- He was a kind and supportive brother to Stanley during their entire child and teenage years, despite the latter's bad behavior. However, it is noted that Ford still had somewhat of a superiority complex towards Stan and would be occasionally neglectful of him.
- He didn't mean to make Stan feel abandoned and tried to comfort him before the latter destroyed his invention.
- He saved Fiddleford multiple times from Gravity Falls's monsters.
- When still on good terms with Bill, he tried to teach him about human customs and traditions to help him socialize better.
- When he discovered what the interdimensional portal was capable of doing and Bill Cipher's true plans, he hid his journals and deactivated the portal, despite not destroying either of them.
- He called his brother Stanley to help him to hide the third journal, as Stanley was the only one he trusted at the moment.
- While Ford's act of pushing Stan away immediately after meeting him again was undeniably jerk-like, he was understandably desperate as Bill had been invading his mind recently.
- He lived several years evading Bill Cipher across the multiverse, as he knew Bill could use him to build another machine that could help him invade Ford's dimension.
- He installed a metal plate in his mind so Bill Cipher wouldn't enter it and unlock the chaos he wants.
- While he has participated in numerous criminal acts to the point of becoming an interdimensional criminal, these acts were all committed to gather resources for a weapon strong enough to defeat Bill.
- He obliged with parallel Fiddleford's request to not see parallel Ford, not willing to take any risks that could end their universe.
Season 2[]
- While he was mad at Stanley when he saved him from the multiverse and his first response was punching him, this is totally justified, as the simple act of reactivating the portal could accidentally destroy their entire universe, as it was very unstable. But Stan did spend a lifetime trying to bring him back after the accident which is also partly justified.
- Journal 3 also reveals that Ford was about to kill Bill with his weapon, only to be forced to go through so Bill didn't escape immediately. Furthermore, Ford also writes that he does feel bad for punching Stan, though he later cancels this out.
- He was kind to his great-nephews, Dipper and Mabel.
- He constantly protected and found a way to fix the Dimensional Rift that the portal's reactivation caused, as he knew that could bring Bill back.
- He never wanted Mabel to get sad when he offered Dipper a chance of becoming his apprentice and told him he'd help him reconcile with his sister after they fix the Rift.
- He tried to kill Bill Cipher as soon as the latter succeeded in entering his dimension due to how much of a threat he is.
- He resisted hours of intense torture when he was submitted to by Bill Cipher, refusing to let him enter his mind as he knew the entire universe would pay a bigger price if he allowed him in.
- He tried to use the Zodiac to vanquish Bill Cipher and when Stan refused, he told him that he recognized his past mistakes and needed his help in order to fix them, even thanking the latter when he was told to.
- And although he impulsively corrected his grammar, which caused the Zodiac to fail due to them getting in a fight, he apologized for it and realized the fault in his error.
- He told Dipper and Mabel to run from Bill, as fighting him was far too dangerous after the Zodiac was unsuccessful, but they didn't hear him.
- He traded clothes with his brother to trick Bill Cipher and kill him for good by trapping him inside of Stan's mind to save their nephews, the universe, and because Stanley agreed. He never wanted his brother's memories to be erased and was devastated when he saw that his brother truly did lose all his memories of them and everything he's ever done up to this point.
- He made up with Stanley and offered him the chance of fulfilling their childhood dream of having adventures around the world in a boat, and they did it after saying goodbye to Dipper and Mabel, who were leaving Gravity Falls when their summer ended.
- At the end of Journal 3, he finally makes up for his egotism by admitting that Stanley's much more of a hero than he is and becomes content with letting his brother have the spotlight. He also makes efforts to reconcile with Fiddleford after indirectly ruining his life.
Comics[]
- He saved Dipper, Mabel and Pacifica from Mr. Whats-His-Face.
- He helped save Stanley from the comic book multiverse.
- He guided the effort in closing the dimensional rifts caused by Weirdmaggedon.
- He aided Stanley in trying to find Mabel when she was lost in dimension MAB-3L, and later fought the evil Anti-Mabel.
The Book of Bill and This Is Not A Website Dot Com[]
- After finding the Book of Bill, Ford dissects it for its magical properties and throws it into the Bottomless Pit, leaving warnings for any future readers and advice on how to defeat Bill.
- He makes up for lost time with his family, bringing Mabel along to help set up some rituals to seal away Bill's statue.
- He has shown to be more receptive to others now, showing an appreciation for Mabel's pure heart and even has some of Stanley's mischief rub off on him as he harmlessly pranks Dipper.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- While he does make up for most of his corrupting qualities, his egotism and arrogance are one of the main contributing factors to the unfortunate events that occur throughout the show, with his refusal to believe the warnings that summoning Bill is dangerous and to tell his family about the Rift's danger both leading to Weirdmaggedon. He is also rather rude and apathetic towards Stanley throughout the show, though he does eventually make up for it by acknowledging his faults and that he's not superior to anybody.
- He became a criminal in several alternate dimensions for stealing supplies and weapons to construct the quantum destabilizer to destroy Bill. Ford also admits that he committed a few petty crimes during his quest as well, like being kicked out of the Casino Dimension for counting cars.
- He, alongside Stanley, threatened the bus driver who was going to go to California because he refused to allow Waddles in the bus.
Trivia[]
