Two millenniums ago, there was a war. Between the human world and the other... the Underworld. But somebody from the Underworld woke up to justice, and stood up against this legion, alone. His name was Sparda. Later, he quietly reigned the human world, and continued to preserve harmony, until his death. He became a legend. The Legendary Dark Knight, Sparda.
~ The story of Sparda, as told by the narrator in Devil May Cry (2001).

Sparda is the overarching protagonist of the Devil May Cry franchise.

He was one of the most powerful demonic swordsmen in the entire Demon World, who acted as the right-hand of Mundus, until one day he realized the latter's evilness and fought against his tyranny, sealing away him away with his armies all by himself, thus becoming humanity's primary protector.

At one point, he fell in love with a human woman named Eva, whose relationship eventually gave to light two kids: Dante and Vergil. He would then disappear and die under unknown circumstances.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close To Being Pure Good?[]

  • After "waking up to justice" one day, he rebelled against Mundus and fought his armies, stopping them from subjecting humanity.
  • Before his rebellion, he made a path with his students, like Bael and Modeus, to live true to their ambitions.
  • Through a blood ritual, he sealed away Mundus and his forces with the Temen-ni-gru gateaway, having also imprisoned seven other demons as further gates.
  • Later, he also sealed another path to to Hell present in Fortuna, using the Yamato.
  • He also benevolently ruled Fortuna as his Feudal Lord.
  • At one point, he defended the Dumary Island from Argosax, fighting him and Bolverk in Hell as well.
  • He eventually fell in love a human woman named Eva, having two kids from her and taking care of them until the day that he died.
  • He easily sets the Admirable Standard of the series being its Bigger Good, having defended humanity for various centuries while also being the primary reasons characters such as Dante and Nero became the heroes that they are now.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • Considering how he almost never shows up on-screen, and is only talked about by other characters, the full extents of Sparda's personality are unknown, thus making him insufficiently characterized. That being said, he was described as a noble, selfless and brave figure, making this a minor prevention.
  • As Sparda is heavily implied to share personality traits from both Dante and Vergil, is likely that he also showcased some of their corrupting qualities as well, such as lethality and recklessness.
  • Judging by a comment made by Vergil on how Dante "would start crying every time [Sparda] raised his voice", it's also implied that he was also a bit wrathful as well.
