Sonic the Hedgehog is the titular main protagonist of the franchise of the same name created by Sega.
He is a 15-year-old blue hedgehog well known for being a speedster. He is also known for his arrogance towards situations that are serious and is Dr. Eggman's arch-nemesis. While the franchise has Pure Goods that are morally scaled higher than him, that doesn't mean their admirable factors outclass his as he is the most effective hero among them, being a major example of how a great Near Pure Good can be as admirable as Pure Goods.
He used to be voiced by Meg Inglima which was in the first speaking role of his in Sonic's Schoolhouse. He was voiced by Ryan Drummond from 1999 to 2003. In 2005, Drummond was replaced by Jason Griffith. The role was kept until 2010 which was when he got replaced by Roger Craig Smith, who has voiced Sonic ever since. In Japanese, he has been voiced by Junichi Kanemaru since 1998.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
In General involving Classic Era[]
- He always stands up against Eggman's evil plans; whenever fighting the evil scientist, it's to only thwart him and never outright intends to take his life.
- He saved Tails when he was kidnapped by Eggman.
- He defends Tails whenever he gets bullied.
- He's very protective towards his friends and whenever teasing some of them, it's usually in a playful manner.
- He saves animals from being used as power sources for the Badniks.
- He defeated Metal Sonic and saved Amy when she was kidnapped by him.
- He returned the Master Emerald back to Knuckles.
- He has a great ability to forgive those who used to be his enemy, including Knuckles, Shadow, Blaze, Rouge, Silver, Jet, and Sage, accepting their personalities that contrast or parallel his own.
Modern Era[]
Sonic Adventure Duology[]
- When Chaos reached his final form and began wreaking havoc by flooding Station Square, Tikal felt they had to seal him back into the Master Emerald since she thought it was the only way to stop him. However, after hearing from her that Chaos was filled with rage and sadness, he felt enough sympathy for him that he was opposed to this idea, since as he pointed out, if they did that, Chaos' anger would never vanish, and he would just be trapped with it forever rather than truly fix the problem.
- He defeated Chaos, which saved the world from its rage, as well as restored him back to his original, benevolent self.
- Defeated Final Hazard and saved the world alongside Shadow.
- When Rouge asks him if Shadow was truly created to finish Gerald Robotnik's revenge, he says it doesn't matter since, in the end, he was a brave and heroic hedgehog who saved Earth, forgiving Shadow for his previous transgressions (including framing him for them).
Sonic Heroes[]
- He stops Eggman's robots from terrorizing the world with Team Sonic.
- While he does fight Team Rose and Team Dark, there were understandable reasons for those. For Team Rose, Amy Rose tries to force Sonic to marry her again, as well as thinking that he took Froggy and Chocola Chao which he clearly didn't do. For Team Dark, Sonic was shocked to see Shadow alive but still got in a fight because the black hedgehog both lost his memory and, along with his teammates, competed with him to get to Eggman first.
- Encouraged the other teams to use the true power of teamwork to defeat Metal Sonic.
- Defeated Metal Sonic alongside Tails and Knuckles.
Shadow the Hedgehog[]
- He contributes to the war against the Black Arms. In several scenarios, he:
- Helps G.U.N. fight the aliens in Westopolis.
- Personally follows Black Arms to Space Colony Ark, inviting Shadow along.
- Helps Shadow fight Black Doom.
- Teams up with the Commander to stop Shadow when he goes rogue and joins the Black Arms.
- Cheers Shadow on during his final fight with Black Doom and congratulates him on destroying the Black Comet.
Sonic Rush Duology[]
- He teaches Blaze the Cat to open up and rely on friends rather than carry her burdens alone.
- In Blaze's story, he allows Blaze to go alone to rescue Cream.
- He and Blaze defeat Eggman and Eggman Nega, preventing their worlds from merging.
- He helps Blaze retrieve the Jeweled Scepter from Captain Whisker.
- He and Blaze defeat Eggman and Eggman Nega when they try use the Power of the Stars.
Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)[]
- Rescued Princess Elise multiple times from Dr. Eggman.
- Always tried to convince Princess Elise to smile no matter what.
- He saves the multiverse from Solaris alongside Shadow and Silver.
- Convinced Princess Elise to extinguish the Flames of Disaster, and thus, reverse every terrible thing that Iblis, Mephiles, and Solaris did.
- Even though Silver tried to kill him twice, Sonic did not hold a grudge aganst him even once. When he had the upper hand in their first encounter, he checked if he was okay before the psychic hedgehog did a sneak attack on him. The third time they meet, Sonic, though slightly wary, accepts Silver's help to save Elise. He was also motivated to save Silver's future through saving Elise.
- Despite him and Silver being mistaken for each other, he doesn't call the latter "faker", like he did with Shadow when he first encountered him.
Sonic Riders Trilogy[]
- He was angered by Wave insulting Tails' work on the Blue Star.
- He returns the Key to Babylon Garden to Jet after retrieving it from Eggman.
- He and his group help the Babylon Rogues defeat the Babylon Guardian, despite the hostile rivalry between them.
- He stands up for Amy when Jet rudely demanded her Ark of the Cosmos.
- He, Tails, Knuckles, and the Babylon Rogues defeated Eggman and SCR-HD, preventing the latter from engulfing the world in a black hole.
- During his wins and losses during the second EX Grand Prix, he showed varied degrees of good sportsmanship. Unlike the other teams, he and his entered the tournament for the fun of it rather than for the treasure and cash prizes.
- While aggravated by Jet's mean-spirited arrogance, Sonic never returned his insults and still showed good sportsmanship. Even though Jet is still abrasive after their rivalry has gotten friendlier, Sonic is more tolerable of him.
The Secret Rings[]
- During his time in the Arabian Nights, he saved Ali Baba and King Sharyar, rescued Sinbad and made a promise to Shahra that he will make her smile in the end.
- What makes this even more admirable is that Sonic had a cold at the start of the game and could have sat it out, yet he still wanted to help out Shara.
- Defeated Erazor Djinn, preventing him from escaping to Sonic's universe and destroying it.
- Brought Shahra back to life using a wish from Erazor Djinn.
- Saved the world of the Arabian Nights from Erazor Djinn by wishing for him to restore it back to normal.
- After noticing Shahra was upset over Erazor no longer being with her, Sonic wished for a mountain tissue so she could cry for as long as she needed.
- Once Shahra had gotten over losing Erazor, he threw his lamp into the Foundry, preventing Erazor from ever being released again.
- While this may seem cruel for Sonic, Erazor more than deserved it for all his crimes throughout the game and prior to the game's events.
Sonic and the Black Knight[]
- He agrees to defeat the Black Knight, a corrupted King Arthur.
- He acknowledges that his actions, while for the greater good, will make him a kingslayer when pointed out by Merlina.
- When battling the Knights of the Round Table, Sonic only defeated them rather than striking them down; he refused to do in Lancelot, stopped Gawain from taking his own life, and saved Percival from falling into lava.
- He defeats King Arthur.
- While he clashed with Caliburn due to their contrasting mannerisms and the sword constantly calling him "Knave the Hedgehog", Sonic ultimately warms up to him and was distraught when he was broken in half by Merlina's attack.
- He inspires the Knights of the Round Table to fight for Camelot rather than just in Arthur's name, even giving them back their swords he took.
- He rejects Merlina's idea of making the kingdom eternal, deeming a world that never ends as meaningless and how it goes against the natural flow of life.
- He refused to retreat from a losing battle with Merlina, his determination, combined with the sacred swords, turning him in Excalibur and reviving Caliburn as Excalibur and allowing them to defeat Merlina as the Dark Queen.
- He explains to Merlina that though all worlds ultimately end, they need to live life to fullest in the time they have, his advice redeeming her.
Sonic Unleashed[]
- Promised to help Chip regain his memories.
- Saved Tails from the Dark Gaia Creatures.
- Rescued Professor Pickles with Tails.
- When Amy then doesn't recognize him and Chip, by accident, made a point why, Sonic felt sad about this implying that deep down, he does care about her and maybe has some feelings for her.
- Saved Chun-Nan's elder from the Dark Gaia Phoenix and eliminated the Phoenix's corruption.
- Defeated Dark Gaia and brought the world back together with the help of Chip.
Sonic Colors[]
- Saved the Wisps from Dr. Eggman.
- Threw Tails to an escape pod so he could be safe while he was fighting Dr. Eggman and the Nega Wisp Armor.
- Defeated and freed the Nega Mother Wisp from the dark energy that corrupted her.
Sonic Generations[]
- He saved all of his friends when they were erased from space and time by the Time Eater along with his Classic version.
- Stopped the Time Eater and the Dr. Eggmen with his Classic version.
- Restored the universe from Time Eater.
Lost World[]
- Defeated the Deadly Six and Dr. Eggman, saving the world.
- While he didn't want to team up with Eggman at first, it was understandable considering that Eggman was likely to betray them which did happen in the end where the latter revealed he used their alliance for his own selfish ends.
- When Tails thinks that Sonic trusts Eggman more than him, he tries to tell him that he does trust his buddy, but they needed to work together if they're going to defeat the Zeti.
- While Sonic does want to defeat the Zeti, he didn't want to destroy everything around them, appalled when Eggman suggested blowing up Lost Hex and outraged that he considered additional casualties as collaterals.
- While he refuted Eggman blaming him, which was understandable considering it was also the doctor's own fault for abusing and controlling the Deadly Six, he felt great guilt for his culpability in the Deadly Six's uprising, as he impulsively kicked the Cacophonic Conch from Eggman which enabled them to use the doctor's Energy Extractor to steal the world's life energy.
- He somewhat thanks Eggman for saving Tails' life from Cubot fused with a battle mech that his friend only made to help the bodiless body.
- He feels remorse for not listening to Tails and not saving him, claiming that he was supposed to be the fastest, but he was too slow to save him.
- When Eggman seemingly fell to his demise once the doctor saved the hedgehog's life, Sonic was genuinely shocked that Eggman saved his life (which turned out to be pragmatic) and mourned his nemesis despite everything he'd done.
- He apologizes to Tails, promising that he'll never doubt him again.
Sonic Forces[]
- Saved Silver from Infinite.
- Helped the Rookie learn to overcome their fear.
- Saved the Rookie from Eggman's robots.
- Defeated the Eggman Empire and liberated the world with the help of the Rookie and Classic Sonic.
- Defeated Infinite along with the Rookie, while also stating that heart, soul, and the bond of friendship are three things that Infinite lacks and can't be defeated.
- After saying goodbye to Classic Sonic, he comforted Tails and said to him that they would probably find him again soon.
- He saves the animals that Dr. Eggman captures to power up his machines and robots.
Team Sonic Racing[]
- Defeats Team Eggman and rescues Dodon Pa before Final Fortress crashes.
Sonic Frontiers[]
- On Kronos Island, when Amy's initiative is to bring one of the Koco back to their lover, Sonic tries to remind her on several occasions of the greater stakes at hand. While Amy initially views this as Sonic being selfish and gets somewhat mad at him, Sonic calmly responds by telling her that she can't spread love onto the world, like she's trying to do with the Koco, while still stuck in Cyber Space.
- Even after Sage attempts to assault Sonic, he prevents Knuckles from attacking her, realizing that the reason she is acting antagonistic towards him is probably because she's trying to protect something or someone. This is also the first step that gets Sage to open up to him.
- He frees his friends from their prison in Cyber Space, even though it will mean that the Cyber Corruption would eventually kill him, he is willing to sacrifice himself to save his loved ones.
- When his friends expressed their desire to explore the world after they are freed from Cyber Space, Sonic encouraged them to do so even though he would most likely not see them for a long time.
- All throughout the game, Sonic helping his friends when they were in need is what gets Sage to open up and begin redeeming herself. It is ultimately the moment where he shares an immutable bond with Tails that gets her to realize what she really wants.
- He, Doctor Eggman and Sage worked together to stop The End from destroying all of existence so he can prevent the same tragedy the Ancients endured.
The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog[]
- He saves his friends before the Mirage Express train can deliver them all to Eggman.
- He forgives Espio when the latter used a poison dart on him as part of the murder mystery game.
- He gets Amy a birthday cake and wishes her a happy birthday.
Comics[]
- Following the Eggman War, he travels the world, stopping Badnik attacks on the villages with his friends, notably liberating Barricade Town from Rough and Tumble.
- Wary at first, he decides to give Mr. Tinker, a kindly, amnesiac Eggman, a chance to live peacefully in Windmill Village and do some good, defending him from Shadow who attempts to kill him.
- When Shadows reminds him of all the terrible things Eggman had done and states that he deserves death for everything he did, Sonic rightfully reminds Shadow how he once tried to destroy the world out of revenge and he was given a second chance after that.
- He defeats Neo Metal Sonic when he takes over Angel Island.
- He has Tails repair and deweaponize Metal Sonic in order to give his robot double a chance at an independent life. However, this ends up biting him back when Metal helps restore Eggman's memories, who in turn makes Metal dangerous again.
- He defeats Rough and Tumble when they hold Windmill Village hostage.
- He tries to save Silver upon learning Dr. Starline tricked him into triggering explosives and thanks him for saving him from said explosives, getting him medical attention afterwards.
- He goes around helping with evacuating the towns Eggman infects with the Metal Virus.
- While he staunchly believes Eggman deserved a second chance as Mr. Tinker, he still feels deep guilt for how his merciful act ultimately gave his nemesis a chance to do worse.
- Even so, he still refused to believe killing Eggman was the solution when Shadow and Espio state otherwise, either blaming Starline who restored his memories or intending to imprison Eggman when he completely shows no remorse for throwing away his second chance to continue his crimes.
- Even if Shadow and Espio were wrong and/or right that he was at fault for Eggman's return of power and angrily blame him for it, Sonic remains pure to his morals and, while evidently frustrated at their outbursts, doesn't lash out at them (given they had to focus on evacuations).
- With Silver's help, he cleanses the world of the Metal Virus using the Chaos Emeralds and the Warp Topaz.
- Once Blaze remedies his amnesia and returns him to his dimension, he saves his friends and Spiral Hill Village from Eggman.
- He and Shadow attempt to save White Park Chateau from an avalanche caused by Dr. Starline. While they failed, they at least bought enough time for an evacuation.
- Initially distrustful of Belle the Tinkerer, Sonic warms up to and befriends her after learning of her heroism.
- He supports Belle when she joins the Resistance and later consoles her when she reveals Eggman created her as Mr. Tinker.
- He fights the Deadly Six single-handedly when they attack Restoration HQ.
- As Tails prepares to send the defeated Zeti back to Lost Hex, Sonic, despite past experiences, refuses to betray his morals out of fear when Zavok swore revenge.
- He helps Belle make peace with Mr. Tinker's "death".
- He offers Surge the Tenrec a chance at redemption, only resuming fighting when she chooses to be a menace. He later tries to save her from falling to her death, which she spitefully refuses.
- To escape from Eggperial City when Eggman regains control, Sonic keeps the Badniks swarms' attention while Tails and Belle find an escape shuttle.
- He motivates Kitsunami the Fennec to stall Metal Sonic's relentless pursuit.
- He saves Whisper from Surge equipped with the Dynamo Cage.
- Upon learning of how Surge and Kit came to be through Starline's experiments, he tries to rehabilitate her again.
- He showed anger at Eggman when the scientist tries to abduct Surge in her weakened state. Despite this, he refuses to act on it for the time being.
- With Silver, Blaze, the Diamond Cutters, and Team Dark's help, he destroys Eggperial City.
- He finally subverts the misplaced leniency he showed Eggman and Metal Sonic in Urban Warfare, where he chooses to allow the former to have his well-deserved comeuppance and pushes the latter into Omega’s crossfire.
Sonic Prime[]
Season 1[]
- He apologised to Tails for ignoring his warning about Eggman's trick.
- While he broke the Paradox Prism and split reality into five Gateways and creating the Shatterverse while trying to stop Eggman which sets the events of the series, this was by accident and he was remorseful which leads to him trying to fix the mess he made.
- He saved Nine from getting hit by a train and befriended him.
- He and Nine helped Rebel Rouge and Renegade Knucks fight the Chaos Council.
- He makes peace between the Scavengers and Thorn Rose.
- After Nine showed him the Grim, he convinced him into sending him back to New Yoke to defeat the Chaos Council.
- While he took a sword from Sails and pointed it at Knuckles the Dread, this was out of self-defence.
- He fought Dread's old crew and drove them away after they intruded on the Angel's Voyage.
- He tried to protect the Angel's Voyage crew from the Chaos Council.
- He convinced Dread to come back and fight the Chaos Council.
Season 2[]
- He helped Thorn Rose protect Boscage Maze.
- He, Angel's Voyage crew, and Rusty Rose fought Dr. Deep and Dr. Done-It to get pack the No Place shard.
- Although he was being attacked by the Angel's Voyage crew, he shows no ill will towards them as Dread manipulated them into doing so.
- He also saves both Roses from Chaos Council firing.
- He returned to New Yoke to aid Rebel Rouge and Renegade Knucks in the fight against the Chaos Council.
- He and Nine defeated Chaos Sonic.
- He and Shadow buy Nine some time to rebuild the Paradox Prism and even defeated the Eggman Titan.
Season 3[]
- He saved civilians from falling on a tipped-over New Yoke.
- While he formed an alliance with the Chaos Council and made everyone else do the same, he understood that probably shouldn't trust each other and it was solely because everyone had a common enemy and all of their worlds were in jeopardy meaning everyone available had to work together for survival.
- He saved the Angel's Voyage crew before No Place decayed.
- He was willing to let Nine take his power if he promised to spare everyone else.
- He constantly tries to convince Nine to switch sides.
- He saves his friends when it looks like they're about to get injured by Nine's robots.
- He made his allies pretend to end up losing to make Nine let his guard down making it easier to defeat him.
- After realizing what Nine wanted to do for him, he feels remorseful over not listening to what he wanted.
- He stops everyone from fighting when the Grim was minutes away from fully decaying.
- He sacrifices himself to prevent the Grim from taking everyone with it.
- Also making sure everyone promised to not hurt Nine after he did.
- He tricks the Chaos Council into fighting each other when they try to take over the Paradox Prism, so Nine and her friends can cast them into the Void, ending his reign forever.
- After returning to a restored Green Hill, he and his friends prevented Eggman from stealing the Paradox Prism and doesn't shatter it this time.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- He acts like a bit of a jerk at times, as he tends to enjoy taunting, belittling and mocking much of his enemies, Eggman especially (even when he doesn’t deserve it); the events of Sonic Unleashed were kickstarted because of him taunting Eggman and letting his guard down.
- While his interactions with Shadow have improved, he can be mutually jerkish towards him to a degree.
- He can be pretty arrogant and reckless sometimes, leading him to making extremely poor decisions, notably in Sonic Lost World and Sonic Prime where his rash actions where his rash actions endangered Tails and the world and split reality apart respectively. While he does become better over time, his arrogance is not completely subverted as of later games such as Sonic Frontiers or The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog.
Trivia[]
- He is the icon of the Near Pure Good wiki and is also the icon of the Spoilers template.
- Shadow and Silver are considered his Inconsistently Admirable and Pure Good counterparts respectively; Shadow, like Sonic, follows his own morals but with a grim morality while Silver, a similarly selfless individual with a strong sense of justice, is more serious-minded in his heroics and lacks his corrupting qualities.
- Additionally, they embody different tenses. Sonic chooses to live in and enjoy the present rather than dwell on the past (Shadow) or worry about the future (Silver).
- While Near Pure Good, he has actually been significantly involved in the character development of several Pure Goods: Tails, Amy, Tikal, Blaze, Silver, Chip, the Rookie, and Crane.
- In Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (3DS), he is part of the Heroes group and the only one to be Near Pure Good, as Tails and the Mario Bros. are Pure Good.
- Coincidentally, their movie counterparts have the same statuses as their respective video game counterparts.
- He has had crossovers with Mario and Mega Man, Pure Goods who have similarities to him but lacking his corrupting factors; his friendships with them paralleling and contrasting the ones their arch-nemeses have.
- He is a foil to Dr. Eggman, in the senses that both are considered "Near" the edge of their respective morality, their detracting/corrupting factors being a semblance of humanity for Eggman and cockiness for Sonic, both of which have been waning over time; Sonic has shown his impulsive actions can cause problems just like Eggman’s. In fact, through their acts, Eggman shows, as the most consistent villain, how a Near Pure Evil is just as heinous as Pure Evils whilst Sonic, the primary hero, exemplifies how a Near Pure Good can be as admirable as Pure Goods.
