Shuichi Aizawa is a major antagonist in the anime and manga series Death Note.
He is a member of the Japanese Task Force and one of the most prominent detectives involved in the Kira Investigation, although sometimes he is exasperated with L's methods. He is voiced by the late Keiji Fujiwara in the Japanese version of the anime and Trevor Devall in the English version.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- After the majority of the NPA members resigned out of fear about Kira, Aizawa is among the few people to remain in the Task Force and continue arrest Kira, despite they are under the risk of getting killed.
- He is the loudest one to demand that L show himself in person.
- When Ukita is killed by The Second Kira, he demands to go to the place where Ukita was killed and avenge him, and gets angry when L tries to stop him.
- Although he chooses to leave when the NPA discontinues funding for the Task Force, this is not corrupting, as he needs to care for his family.
- He feels remorseful after leaving Task Force, bursting out crying in front of his wife and daughter.
- Even after he quitted the Task Force, he secretly works behind the scenes alongside Hideki Ide.
- When Higuchi is trying to escape, he and Ide organized a group of police cars to prevent Higuchi from going any further, allowing the Task Force to arrest him.
- He rejoins the Task Force after Higuchi's death. And after L dies, he continues to stay in the Task Force under Light's command, although he doesn't know Light is Kira and he is used by Light as a pawn.
- He takes part in raiding against the mafia to take the notebook back from Mello.
- When Near informs the Task Force of the fake rules within the Death Note, he is the first member to suspect that Light is Kira.
- He gave Near information about the fake execution L staged, with Soichiro threatening to kill kill Light and then himself, as well as L's actions towards Light, These, particularly the fact that Soichiro said he'd kill himself after killing Light, allowed Near to determine with certainty that the Second L is Light Yagami.
- He and Mogi proceed to investigate Misa's apartment.
- When Light began "investigating" Takada but actually giving orders to her, Aizawa leaves a nail mark on the notepad to find out whether Light is secretly contacting her.
- Once he notices the nail mark he left is gone, he is certain Light is Kira, then he informs Near of this, only to be told not to make any moves besides keeping an eye on Light.
- When Light is exposed as Kira, Aizawa puts a hand on his shoulder to hold him in place so Mogi can handcuff him.
- When the angry Touta Matsuda insists on killing Light despite he is no longer a threat, he stops Matsuda and tries to calm him down.
Anime Only[]
- When Mikami kills himself to help Light escape, Aizawa defies Near's order to not to go after Light for he would die for bleeding.
Manga Only[]
- After Light dies and Near becomes the new L, Aizawa becomes the deputy director and successor to Soichiro Yagami.
- A few years after the end of the case, he leads the NPA to join forces with Near to bring down a major illegal drug use conspiration in Japan.
- After C-Kira gets a Death Note and start killing the eldelry and suicidal, and the new L decides to stay out of it, even remarking the NPA should be able to handle it themselves, Aizawa mobilizes the force to start looking for it, as such as dangerous weapon cannot be let around in Earth.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- Most of his admirable deeds are either under L and Near's order or shared by other Task Force members, thus he fails the admirable standard to Soichiro Yagami and Touta Matsuda, who stand out for their own Goodness Zone crossings.
- He shows some lethality when he comments that the task force should kill Demegawa on seeing one of his broadcasts (the dub tones this down to him saying he should be killed by Kira).
- He is short-tempered and is easy to get angry.
- He angrily shouts at Matsuda when Matsuda talks about work-irrelevant topics.
- When learning that L had not mentioned the money because he wanted to see what Aizawa would choose to do, he leaves the Task Force out of spite.
- While he becomes more calm in the second half, he still shows rudeness now and then, especially to Matsuda.
