“ | In the vast universe, the history of humanity is but a flash of light from a lone star. The life of a single person should be lost in space and time. But among the stars, there is one light that burns brighter than all others. The light of Samus Aran. Her battles extend beyond her life and etch themselves into history. | „ |
~ Metroid Prime's intro on Samus. |
Samus Aran is the main protagonist of the Metroid franchise. She is a bounty hunter hired by the Galactic Federation to defeat an evil band of criminals called the Space Pirates.
In Japanese, she is voiced by Minako Hamano (although unused) in Super Metroid and Ai Kobayashi in Metroid: Other M. In English, she was voiced by "JH" (believed to be Jennifer Hale) throughout the Metroid Prime subseries (though her death scream was provided by "VM", believed to be Vanessa Marshall), Mary Law in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Alésia Glidewell in the Super Smash Bros. series, Jessica Martin in Metroid: Other M and Nikki García in Metroid Dread.
Her Good Ranking[]
What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- Although she does have a willingness to kill her enemies, most of her kills are justified.
- She kills the Space Pirates, Gorea, Dark Samus, Phaaze, Ridley, Mother Brain, Raven Beak and other universal threats, many of whom were responsible for many deaths.
- She freed Tallon IV, Bryyo, Elysia and a Space Pirate planet from Phazon corruption.
- She killed all of the Metroids on SR388 so that nobody could experiment with them maliciously.
- She spared the last baby Metroid and become the mother to it.
- Saved all of the aliens on Zebes when she triggered the self-destruct button on it.
- She is willing to sacrifice herself if it means saving the universe such as when she tried to destroy the X Parasites on Bottle Ship, SR388 and ZDR.
- Despite being taken very seriously, she doesn't darken the mood.
- Most of the times she is vengeful are just heating up periods and are only directed to those that deserved it.
- In the Subspace Emissary, when she saw a device draining the electric energy of a Pikachu, she freed the Pokemon immediately. Until Tabuu captures them and the other fighters, Samus and Pikachu fight side by side to protect each other and get revenge on the Subspace Army.
What Prevents Her From Being Pure Good?[]
- Most of her heroic deeds are done for bounties and getting revenge. However, she is much more honorable and altruistic since she only takes jobs that are for the greater good and she became a bounty hunter only for free will in contrast to the other bounty hunters, so this isn't too mitigating. Examples of her prioritising the greater good include:
- In Metroid Fusion, she actively disobeys orders with the Galactic Federation, a popular client of hers, to interfere with their plans to research the SA-X. She instead destroys the Bottle Ship and SR388, including all SA-Xs, due to the huge galactic risk that the X-Parasites.
- In Metroid Dread, she is well aware that, as ADAM mentions, "the risk clearly outweighs the reward". She isn't simply working for money, even though she is still being paid as she cares strongly for the greater good and her slight vengeful and bounty-collecting motives never detract from her heroism to benefit the greater good.
Trivia[]
- For a long time, she was approved as Inconsistently Admirable. However, after it was discussed that her heroic deeds as a bounty hunter weren't anti-heroic and most of her kills were justified, she was proposed and approved here.
- Coincidentally, her status is the opposite of Donkey Kong's. She started off as IA but then became NPG when it was discussed that her actions were not anti-heroic, while Donkey Kong started off as NPG but then became IA when it was discussed that not all of his actions were heroic, although his movie version stays for not displaying all of those negative qualities.
- Although she does have a fair share of arrogance where she taunts her opponent by saying "Try me," or "Is that all you got?", she only does that in Super Smash Bros. and not in the main games, so it doesn't affect her status.
- She and Quiet Robe are currently the only Metroid characters to be NPG.
