Ryuji Sakamoto, codenamed Skull while in the Metaverse, is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Ann Takamaki) and party members in the Persona 5 sub-series within the Persona series.

He is a former track runner and a student at Shujin Academy. After meeting Ren Amamiya and accidentally entering Kamoshida's palace, he eventually awakens to his Persona, Captain Kidd, he eventually becomes one of the founding members of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, alongside Ren Amamiya, Morgana and Ann Takamaki.

He is voiced by Mamoru Miyano in the Japanese version and by Max Mittelman in the English version.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

  • Helps the Phantom Thieves change the hearts of many criminals, such as Suguru Kamoshida, a perverted school teacher, Ichiryusai Madarame, an abusive art teacher who mooched off his students' work and forged them as his own, Junya Kaneshiro, a mafia boss who tried to rape Makoto, and Masayoshi Shido, a corrupt politician who wanted to rule Japan with an iron fist.
  • He is often the comedic relief amongst the Phantom Thieves, from moments such as how Ren can rat him out as a phantom thief but the name of the entire Phantom Thieves group being customized to something wacky so Ren is effectively saying "Ryuji is a Ryuji", or even just his signature line.
  • He was one of the few people at the beginning of the story who didn't believe the rumors of Ren being a bad person as many thought that he was, and he sympathized with him after hearing the actual story. Plus he was Ren's first friend after he went to the Shujin Academy.
  • Saved Ann when she was captured in Kamoshida's palace.
  • Helps Futaba get over her social anxiety.
  • Helped defeat Yaldabaoth, a false god who wanted to enslave humanity into a totalitarian state.
  • Almost sacrificing his life in Shido's palace to provide a safety boat to save the other Phantom Thieves.
  • In Persona 5 Strikers he helped stopped more criminals, most notably Akira Konoe, a CEO of a multi-billion dollar IT company who acted as a Knight Templar all the while he ruined many peoples' live and tried to enslave everyone using EMMA, Kuon Ichinose, the creator of EMMA, and EMMA itself, who used countless people for its own gain in attempt to enslave the world.
  • In the anime version, despite telling the team to let Morgana go after he briefly walks out on them, he does show concern for Morgana and tries to apologize to him in Mementos.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • He can be an arrogant jerk towards the other PTs, particularly Ann and Morgana, the latter of whom frequently criticizes him on a daily basis and vice versa. He also never gave an actual apology to Morgana for insensitively calling him useless repeatedly causing the two to have a falling out, ending with Morgana briefly leaving the team; he would later apologize only because the team pressured him into doing it. As such, his apology came off as being backhanded as Ryuji bluntly insisted that it didn’t matter if Morgana wasn’t human or useful, which only enraged him even further. That said, their friendship has gotten much better in Strikers, and by extension Tactica due to making the two come off as more amiable and less antagonistic towards each other.
    • On a related note in the game version, he showed very little to no sympathy for Morgana’s existential crisis after the latter ran away, as he callously expected him to return and forget about their fight. Even when the team started looking for him, Ryuji was more concerned with changing Okumara’s heart, only for Futaba to repeatedly remind him that retrieving Morgana was their main goal, much to his dismay.
  • He tends to be irresponsible and reckless, which he nearly lets the slip of the Phantom Thieves in public many times, prompting the team to validly reprimand him for it.
  • Can be quite a perv, which is shown when he stares at the cleavage of Ann during Futaba's Heist and at the beach. But the beach is a minor one since Ann laughed it off and had fun with it, which shocked and confused Ryuji.
  • He becomes a selfish glory seeker as the story progresses, hoping to get the Black Mask (Akechi) for the sake of becoming famous. Thankfully, he grows out of this near the end of the game making it a minor prevention.
