Ryūko Matoi is the main protagonist in the Kill la Kill anime and manga. She is a nomadic transfer student who transfers to Honnōji Academy in search of the other half of a red Scissor Blade she carries, and the one who murdered her father, "Isshin Matoi."
She is voiced by Ami Koshimizu in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Erica Mendez in the English version of the anime who also voiced Atsuko Kagari.

What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- Is an extremely honorable and has a very strong sense of justice, being incapable to refuse to help a person in need.
- Saved Mako from being deep-fried in front of the rest of the school in the first episode.
- In the second episode, she protected Mako from Omiko and engages in a battle with the tennis club captain in other to save her.
- During "No Tardies Day" in the fourth episode, she and Mako saved Maiko when she was injured by the course's traps, albeit him later turning out to be the one who organized the traps in the first place and stealing Senketsu when the Mankanshoku family delivered him to the school for Ryuko.
- Sheds most of her corrupting qualities throughout the series such as her arrogance, pride and rudeness, becoming a genuinely nice girl at the end of the story.
- Forgiving Ragyō for all of the heinous things she has done to her and everyone in the show, by offering her a chance to come down to earth with her.
- Shedding her goal for revenge and deciding to fight for the greater good. In this way, she's no longer an anti-hero.
- Ultimately gets close to Satsuki, who outright antagonized her even though she was good all along. To be fair, Satsuki's ruthlessness as Honnoji Academy's Student Council President was a ruse to throw away potential suspicions from Ragyo as she worked on her own resistance group against Revocs Corporation and that she saw Ryūko as a potential ally from start albeit too well.
- In the penultimate episode of the series, she used Shinra-Koketsu's powers of Absolute Submission to shut down the life fibers of everyone in the world who had one.
- She has a final battle with Ragyō to save the world from being enslaved by her life fibers.
What Prevents Her From Being Pure Good?[]
- She has some jerkish moments, and there are times when she can get easily angered for lazy purposes.
- She has a hard time controlling her temper, going into blind rage many times after being provoked by Nui Harime. Although her hatred to Harime is justified, her berserk state can cause some trouble to her allies.
Trivia[]
- She, alongside Atsuko Kagari from Little Witch Academia, is the one of the only two Studio Trigger heroes to be considered Near Pure Good.
- Coincidentally she and Atsuko share the same English voice actress, Erica Mendez.
