Ruth (ルツ), formerly known as Ulysse (ユリシィ), is a tritagonist of The Ancient Magus' Bride manga/anime series. He was once an ordinary dog and was a former familiar and church grim of Isabelle. He used to be called Ulysse during his time with her until her passing. He is now a familiar of Chise Hatori where he is renamed as Ruth. He can shapeshift into a large black dog and can drag a building-sized chimera dragon.
He is voiced by Koki Uchiyama in Japanese and Austin Tindle in English.

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- During his time with Isabelle, his previous owner, he compliments Isabelle’s red hair and says it's beautiful, while other kids in her town insult it.
- After Isabelle died in an accident, he waited for her in her grave for centuries, thinking that she was still alive, showing that he has undying loyalty.
- In the present, he saved Chise from the graveyard monster.
- He saved Chise’s life again after she was being impaled by Joseph’s chimera.
- After Joseph mutilated and turned Isabelle's corpse into a chimera, Ruth put her out of her misery by killing her.
- While he helped Elias in an attempt to ritual sacrifice Stella (who was an innocent child) in order to save Chise from her Dragon Curse, he did felt remorseful in doing so and comprise it with Chise.
- After he becomes Chise’s familiar, he always helps and supports Chise and Elias whenever he can. Some notable examples are:
- Helps Chise make a magic wand.
- Scared off Alice's former drug dealers when they are harassing her.
- Helps Chise and Stella find Elias and Ethan when they are captured by Ashen Eye.
- Finds Chise and Elias when they are out in the snowy forest for so long.
- Helps Chise in saving the dragon chimera and drags both of them out of the water from drowning.
- After Chise was captured by Joseph, he tries to track her scents, but he could not pick up anything.
- Saves Chise from Joseph along with Elias and the others.
- Protects Chise from Joseph’s centipedes.
- He took Chise's stolen left eye away from Joseph so Chise is able to cast sleeping spell on Joseph.
- Helping Chise save Gabriel from passing over to the "other side" with the Wild Hunt.
- Escorted unconscious Lucy back to the training camp and wait for Chise and other students to return.
- Looked after Lucy when Chise took her place in the waste disposal duty.
- He took out one of Lizbeth's guards to protect Chise and her friends.
- He uses his flames to enchant Chise's magic hammer in order to break the ritual circle and save Philomela.
- He helps Morrigan in distracting Treader of the Dust so Philomela can get back the Testament of Carnamagos to undo the ritual casted by her grandmother.
- He tried to stop the werewolf cub from getting away with the Testament of Carnamagos.
- During their trip to Zoe's village (along with Lucy), when Chise and Elias went out with Springmorningstar (Zoe's mother) for her morning routine, he calls out Chise to hurry back to the village. He told her that Zoe and Lucy are in danger.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- He fails the show/manga's in-universe admirable standard to Chise and Elias, as he lacks unique, standalone heroism to him alone beyond his undying loyalty to his old familiar.
- He can be a bit of a jerk at times.
- He did not bother to stop Philomela from going to Lizbeth in the basement, although this is a minor prevention as he did advise her not to be forced by her grandmother.

- He is currently the only The Ancient Magus' Bride character to be Near Pure Good.
