Rafael is one of the three tritagonists (alongside Nico and Pedro) of the Rio franchise. He is a black and white Toco Toucan with a big yellow beak with a red stripe on the top and a black marking on his tip. He lives with his wife Eva and with 21 mischievous little Toucans.
He is voiced by George Lopez.

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- Rafael is generally a friendly and social bird who gets along with everyone.
- He is very selfless when it comes with his family. Though his family could get chaotic at times with his mischievous children and a scary wife, he would always choose his family first before Carnival, which is something he really loves.
- He tells Blu that he would rather go back to his family instead of going to Carnival, saying that he listened to his heart instead of his mind.
- Rafael is good at giving others advice, as he helps Blu and Jewel fall in love.
- Rafael is an optimistic peacemaker who generally tries to make everyone to get along, and make the situation satisfied for everyone.
- After he learned that Blu can't fly, he tries to teach him some flying lessons, telling him the feel the rhythm of his heart.
- He takes Blu and Jewel to Luiz so they can break out of the chain.
- When the marmosets start attacking, he tries to help settle things in a peaceful way, however, this fails. After that, he joins the fight to help his friends.
- After Nico and Pedro informed that Jewel got captured by Nigel, he joins his friends to help look for her.
- He is the only one that doesn't hate Eva's terrible singing and constantly cheers her on despite how bad it is.
- While Nico, Pedro, and Luiz were scaring Blu about the Amazon, he encourages Blu and isn't negative like the others.
- He helps defeat the loggers so the Amazon can be protected. He takes a turtle, and drops the turtle on the loggers heads.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- Rafael fails the admirable standards to Blu who took a bigger part in defeating the loggers and the big boss and saved Jewel's life. Since he took a part in defeating the loggers, help recuse Jewel from Nigel, and trying to teach Blu how to fly, he still has enough to pass the admirable standards.
