His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- On Tyrion's orders, he brought all the men guarding the King's Gate to protect the wall of King's Landing, which played a pivotal role in ending the battle of the Blackwater.
- He saved Tyrion from being killed by Ser Mandon, and looked after him when Tyrion got knocked to the ground by an injury Mandon had given Tyrion prior to the former's death.
- When Tyrion rewarded him with a payment to prostitutes and they refused to take it, he gives back the money to Tyrion.
- Refused to a proposal from the Gold Cloak to give him knighthood if he agrees to testify against Tyrion, instead remaining loyal to him to the end, despite knowing doing so could cause him to be killed.
- He went to Tyrion's cell after he was imprisoned for seemingly poisoning Joffrey and brought him candles, ink and parchment, as well as food like a duck sausage, almonds and cheese. He also attempted to bring him wine but wasn't able to due to the guards taking it.
- Informed Tyrion about his judges on his trial and the witnesses known, and planned to defend Tyrion before being sadly rebuffed in order to escape.
- Became Brienne's squire and aided her on various missions.
- Warns Brienne from talking to Hot Pie about Sansa, though Hot Pie turned out to be reliable and friendly.

- During Brienne's fight with Sandor Clegane, he stayed near her to make sure he would help her if needed.
- He warned Brienne to not go to Sansa after they found her with Littlefinger in a tabern, as they were being guarded by 10 men.
- He distracted Littlefinger's soldiers to allow Brienne to escape from them.

- Before the war against the Wights, he sang to lift the warriors' spirits.
- Bravely fought alongside Jaime and Brienne to defeat the wights. For his bravery and leadership, he becomes a member of the Kingsguard.
- Unlike nearly every other character in the series, Payne lacks corrupting qualities.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- He's below the standards of other characters like Ned, Jon, Daenerys, and Arya, since most of the time he mainly follows orders to stand out, though this is minor considering how he plays important parts of the story, like the Battle of Winterfell.
