The Chainsaw Devil, better known as Pochita and Chainsaw Man, is the titular overarching protagonist of the Chainsaw Man franchise.
He is a devil who embodies humanity's fear of chainsaws, as well as Denji's best friend and only companion growing up, assisting him in killing Devils for several years. After Denji is fatally wounded, Pochita gives Denji his heart. Pochita makes a contract with him to "live his dreams" in exchange for saving his life. Later on, he is revealed to be feared by all Devils in Hell for his ability to erase devils and their concepts from existence.
He is voiced by Shiori Izawa in Japanese and Lindsay Seidel in the English dub.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- As the Hero of Hell, he answered the call of any Devil that asked for his help, only asking for a hug in exchange.
- He consumed several Devils such as the AIDS Devil, Arnolone Syndrome Devil, Light of a Star That Breaks Children's Minds Devil, Mount Hio Eruption Devil, Nazi Devil, World War II Devil, and the Sixth Sense Devil. This erased all the concepts associated with these devils, saving an incalculable amount of people from these deadly threats.
- Pochita consumed the Nuclear Weapons Devil and partially consumed the War Devil, preventing any large-scale wars from breaking out ever since World War I and saving the world from the possibility of nuclear armageddon.
- In Hell, Pochita continuously fought against some of the most powerful Devils in existence, refusing to give up despite their numerous attempts to kill him.
- Pochita spends several years living alongside Denji after his calamitous battle with the Four Horsemen Devils and the Weapons Devils, assisting him with killing Devils and cutting down trees for wood. In spite of Denji's meager lifestyle and only being a young human boy, Pochita never leaves his side.
- After Denji's body is cut up and tossed into a dumpster by the Zombie Devil and his minions, Pochita saves Denji by giving him his heart, asking only that Denji show Pochita his dreams in exchange. In doing this, he effectively gives up control of his own body, but chooses to give Denji control of his powers regardless. This is also in spite of the fact that Denji had given Pochita permission to take over his body if he ever died.
- Pochita appears in Denji's mind several times and urges him not to open the door he sees in his dreams, attempting to spare him from the painful truth that he killed his own father in self-defense.
- When Makima is in danger and calls for his help, he manifests from within Denji's mind to rescue her, despite her heinous actions.
- After reawakening, he attempts to honors Denji by fulfilling his dreams, such as eating a hamburger and going on a date with a girl. He respectfully takes Kobeni out for a date and does his best to have a good time with her to honor Denji's wishes.
- He shields Kobeni from Makima's fatal attack despite his injuries and weakening body. Makima herself commends Pochita as a true hero for this selfless act.
- Pochita manifests Power inside his consciousness using the blood Denji had consumed from her, pleading with Power to save Denji and offering her his own flesh to consume to regain her strength. Thanks to Pochita's influence, this allows Power to re-emerge from inside Pochita's body and rescue Denji.
- Pochita fights against Makima and her army of Weapon Hybrid Devils to stop her from using his powers for her own purposes. Thanks to Pochita distracting Makima long enough, it allows Denji to surprise Makima and fatally wound her, giving Denji the chance to put an end to Makima's villainy.
- Pochita also demonstrated that he doesn't want to erase the Devils in a wanton way, after talking to Makima regarding the existence of bad movies and hearing that Makima wants to erase everything she doesn't like, he decided to stop her.
- Though he's characterized by Makima as a chaotic beast who kills anyone who calls for his help after saving them, Pochita reveals he simply wanted a hug, but due to his enormous power, he could never properly control his strength, which ended up killing anyone he tried to hug.
- While he killed some of the workers at the restaurant he purchased a burger from, it was unintentional as he cannot control his power.
- Despite everything Makima had done, Pochita still sympathizes with her, explaining that she only wanted to build equal relationships with others but didn't know how due to being raised by the Japanese government as a weapon. So Pochita tells Denji to make sure Nayuta, Makima's reincarnation, doesn't turn out like she did and to give her several hugs.
- After Barem burnt down their home, Pochita appeared to Denji and encouraged him to not give up on his dreams, so that Denji doesn't fall into despair like before.
- While Denji was giving up on saving Nayuta because he believed he doesn't deserve a family, Pochita encouraged him to save her.
- While incapacitated, Pochita refused to devour and erase the Aging Devil to avoid killing 10,000 children despite doing so would get him back to full health.
- Despite being a Devil, Pochita has practically none of the typical traits of a Devil, being incredibly empathetic, caring, and willing to save anyone who calls for his help.
- Pochita ate the Bitterness Devil and the Snow Devil not to make Denji forget about the good memories he had with Reze, Power, and Aki, but because he can barf them up so he can remember them to help motivate him to continue living.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- He is little lethal, having murdered (and erased) several Devils in Hell and some humans while he fully manifested on Earth.
- Though some of these deaths were unintentional, and the devils he killed would end up reincarnating on Earth, Pochita never shows remorse for any of the deaths he caused.
Trivia[]
- Pochita is the only Near Pure Good of Chainsaw Man.
- If Pochita were to display remorse for the people he's accidentally killed, he could possibly qualify as Pure Good.
- Similarly, if Pochita showed more of his corrupting traits, he could also possibly qualify as Inconsistently Admirable.
