“ | You're gonna need intelligent people for this sort of mission... quest... thing. | „ |
~ One of Pippin's most famous quotes. |
Peregrin "Pippin" Took is a major character in Peter Jackson's trilogy of adventure-fantasy movies, The Lord of the Rings, which adapts J.R.R. Tolkien's famous epic novels of the same name.
He is a Hobbit from the Shire, being the second cousin once removed from Frodo, the protagonist. He is also a close friend of Samwise Gamgee, and the cousin and best friend of Meriadoc Brandybuck. When Frodo departs away with the task of destroying the One Ring of Power, Pippin Merry and Sam go with him, with Pippin becoming an official part of the mission when he enters the Fellowship of the Ring at Rivendale. While he served more of a slapstick comic relief, and many doubted his capabilities and resourcefulness, as well as how could he help the group, he proved to be a valuable and courageous friend and ally.
He was portrayed by Billy Boyd.

- Their fighting with the Uruk-hai also created a distraction that allowed Frodo and Sam to escape.

- In Fangorn, they met Treebeard, and were taken to see Gandalf, now white. Afterwards, they made friendship with the rest of the Ents.

- As Treebeard required, he guarded the doors of Isengard, ready to warn the Ents if any intruder appeared.
- He welcomed his friends as they entered a now taken over Isengard.
- He gave Gandalf the Palantir when he asked for it.
- While it was a stubborn action to look into the Palantir, that lead him to see a vision of Gondor's White Tree in fire, in other words, Sauron's upcoming devastating attack on Gondor, and since he warned Gandalf of this, he is responsible for the Fellowship being able to prepare themselves for the attack.

- He helped in the battle of the Black Gate with all the strength he could have, to give Frodo time to destroy the One Ring once and for all.
- His action prevented the Battle of Minas Tirith from being a total one-sided destruction to Gondor's side, while also indirectly causing the downfall of Saruman, which, even with his little resources, allow him to stand out.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- He can be very mischievous and mean spirited sometimes, such as stealing one of Gandalf's fireworks with Merry and releasing it, which caused a lot of panic in the Shire, and also, along with Merry again, stealing food from Farmer Maggot.
- As noted by Gandalf and Merry, he can also be impulsive which can often unintentionally cause him and his friends' problems.
Trivia[]
- His book version isn't Near Pure Good for failing the standards too heavily for a variety of reasons, including the higher standards of the books, the bigger focus given to his actions in the movies, and his role in the flood of Isengard and defeat of Saruman being absent in the books.
- He, Merry and Bilbo Baggins are the only The Lord of the Rings Near Pure Goods to be hobbits, although Merry's book version is the only one to come from the books.
