I get it. You're scared. I know, because I'm scared too. I don't wanna risk my life again. But I really don't think we're gonna get another chance to leave this place alive. And if they won't let us go, I say we fight our way out. Together
~ Park Jung-bae to the players before the rebellion.

Park Jung-bae is a major character in Netflix's K-drama Squid Game.

He is Seong Gi-hun's best friend and the former owner of a bar, after bankruptcy and his divorce from his wife, he decided to enter the Squid Games to pay the debt back.

He was portrayed by Lee Seo-hwan.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

In General[]

  • He is shown to be a very kind-hearted, loyal and selfless person, who helps out people around him and is friendly towards others especially to his best friend Seong Gi-hun, but others too like Kang Dae-ho and Kim Jun-hee.
  • Despite the high admirable standards of the series, Jung-bae manages to mostly stand out due to convincing the other players to join the rebellion and participating himself in it to end the Squid Game and prevent future deaths.

Background[]

  • When Gi-hun and Jung-bae lost their jobs, he protested by his side in the workers' strike and stayed with him when he had a nightmare.
  • Although he refused to give Gi-hun a job at his bar, it was only because he was in a precarious financial situation and could not employ anyone.

Season 2[]

  • When he learned of the death of Gi-hun's mother, he was saddened by her death, as she was always kind to him.
  • He entered the Squid Game to pay off his debt to the loan sharks, and also to save his ex-wife and daughter who were threatened with death.
  • Upon seeing Gi-hun at the games, he quickly met up with him and asked how he was doing.
  • He voted X after the first game.
  • He accepted Jun-hee on their team instead of Player 096 because she was pregnant and they couldn't leave her alone.
  • He helped his team advance throughout the Six Pentathlon.
  • Although he voted O afterwards, it was because he needed the money to help his family, later feeling remorse for this and changing his vote back to X.
  • In Mingle, he was shocked when Hwang In-ho killed another player in the same room so they wouldn't die both of them for having three players instead of two in a room. However, seeing In-ho's apparent goodwill in voting X, he assumed that In-ho did it for a greater good, as a necessary evil, and did not betray him, despite intending to tell Gi-hun about this.
  • He met with Seong Gi-hun and some members of Team X to devise a plan to escape the games, where some X's would be used as bait for the O's to kill in the Special Game, which would attract the guards, after which they would kill the guards and start a rebellion.
  • When the guards entered, he helped to take them down and seize their weapons.
  • He convinced the other players to join the rebellion to fight for their freedom and end the Squid Game.
  • He co-led the rebellion with Seong Gi-Hun to take down the guards, reach the Frontman, and thus end the games.
  • He managed to take out several guards and together with Seong Gi-hun he almost reached the Frontman's headquarters. However, they didn't realize that In-ho was the Front Man undercover and their enemy in disguise, staying with Gi-hun until his unfortunate death, when In-ho killed Jung-bae in front of Gi-hun.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • He ultimately fails the admirable standards to Gi-hun himself, who spearheaded the rebellion and saved hundreds of people in Red Light, Green Light.
  • He accepted Gi-hun's plan to use members of Team X as bait for the O's so that the guards would enter after the Special Game. However, this is not too preventing as Jung-bae was one of the few to express concerns about this plan endangering the rest of Team X, meaning he didn't do it willingly.
