Papa Smurf is the overarching protagonist of the 2011 Smurfs live action film duology.
He is the father and protector of all Smurfs, who commands and guides them in Smurf village, while trying to prevent Gargamel form hurting them. When he and a group of Smurfs are accidentally sent to another world, inhabited by humans, Papa tries to find a way not only to defeat Gargamel and stop him from extracting the Smurfs's blue essence, but also to bring them home.
He was voiced by the late Johnathan Winters.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
In general[]
- He takes care of all Smurfs and commands the village.
- As shown in the sequel and before the first movie, he redeemed Smurfette and made her blue instead of grey as Gargamel made her.
- He protected Smurf Village from Gargamel multiple times.
The Smurfs[]
- He told Clumsy to stay in the Village and out of trouble when the latter decided to pick some Smurf Fruit as the fields were too close to Gargamel's castle.
- When Clumsy accidentally lured Gargamel to Smurf Village, he immediately told the Smurfs to head to the forest and told Crazy Smurf to sound the alarm.
- He along with Smurfette, Grouchy, Brainy and Gutsy went after Clumsy when he went the wrong way to the forbidden waterfall.
- He tried to obtain a stargazer to help bring him and the other Smurfs home.
- When Gargamel ambushed them at the library, he ultimately allowed himself to get caught to save Brainy, Grouchy, Smurfette and Gutsy, to buy some time, though Gargamel would be more powerful and capable of capturing other Smurfs after extracting his essence.
- When Smurfette came to save him, he tried to convince her not to because it was dangerous.
- His control-freakiness diminished a bit after realizing Clumsy wouldn't be responsible for the Smurfs's downfall.
The Smurfs 2[]
- He tried to rescue Smurfette when Gargamel kidnapped her.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- He fails the admirable standards to Clumsy, who directly saved the whole of Smurfkind from Gargamel's tyranny and slavery, while the most Papa did (with more resources, since he has a level of magical powers) was allowing himself to get caught to save a few Smurfs and buy some time, and redeeming Smurfette. He also fails to Smurfette herself, who helped redeem the Naughties and defeated Gargamel at the end of the second movie.
Trivia[]
- He is one of the five characters in The Smurfs franchise to be Near Pure Good, alongside Clumsy Smurf, Smufette, Brainy Smurf, and Gutsy Smurf.
