| ~ Obi-Wan to General Grievous, his most famous quote. |
Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the main protagonists of the Star Wars franchise.
He is a Jedi Master who helped train Luke Skywalker in the ways of the Force in the original trilogy. He was the apprentice of Jedi master, Qui-Gon Jinn, and later the master of Anakin Skywalker.
He was portrayed by the late Alec Guinness in the original trilogy. In the radio adaptations of the original trilogy, he was voiced by the late Bernard Behrens. In The Force Awakens, in the prequel and sequel trilogies as well as Obi-Wan Kenobi, he was portrayed by Ewan McGregor, who also voiced and portrayed Lumiere in the live action remake of Beauty and the Beast. He was also voiced by James Arnold Taylor in The Clone Wars and Tales of the Jedi and by Stephen Stanton in Rebels.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- While snarky, he never antagonizes people any more than is warranted, even becoming more humble in the original trilogy.
- Even though he is fanatical and distrusts Anakin in The Phantom Menace, he later subverts those qualities when taking him on as a Padawan.
- He is overall responsible for the Jedi being prepared for the Clone Wars as he discovered the clone army, allowing them to fight for the Republic and defend themselves throughout the entire war.
- According to the events of his eponymous miniseries, he shows full remorse for his fallout with Anakin at Mustafar and the latter's transformation into Darth Vader, to the point that even Vader attempted to absolve him of his guilt, claiming that he (Darth Vader) killed the person he used to be (Anakin Skywalker) to allow Obi-Wan to regain some measure of peace.
- Moreover, his decision to use lies and half-truth while guiding Luke also pained him greatly, especially considering it was partly out of in debt to Anakin/Darth Vader's unexpected help back then. He also had good intentions when lying to Luke, as he believed Luke was not ready to hear the truth yet and feared it would hurt him.
The Phantom Menace[]
- He and Qui-Gon attempt to negotiate a peaceful matter with the Trade Federation.
- He teams up with Qui-Gon in their fight against the Battle Droids.
- He rescues Padmé Amidala and her group from the Trade Federation.
- He defeats Darth Maul in a duel, preventing him from killing anyone else until he returned over a decade later.
- Although this is lethal and deeply hurt Maul, it was done purely in self-defense and he was unaware of the suffering Maul spent on Lotho Minor after being bisected.
- He keeps his promise to a dying Qui-Gon by training Anakin as his own Padawan. This makes him responsible for every good deed he does afterwards, as he likely would have become much worse if he were raised by someone else. Said deeds include:
- Recruiting Ahsoka Tano as his Padawan, also enabling many of Ahsoka's heroic actions.
- Destroying the Separatist superweapon Malevolence.
- Stopping Tal Merrik's escape as he wants to blow up the Coronet.
- Saving Ahsoka's life twice, first when she is dying on Mortis, and second when she is framed for murder.
- Secretly aiding in the war to liberate Onderon.
- Killing Count Dooku while rescuing Chancellor Palpatine, even carrying Obi-Wan on his back afterwards. Obi-Wan even congratulates him for all of this upfront.
- Even as Darth Vader, Anakin has enough good in him to sacrifice himself to save his son Luke by killing Palpatine.
- He attends Qui-Gon's funeral and mourns his death.
Attack of the Clones[]
- He and Anakin serve as detective bodyguards for Padmé, saving her from being poisoned to death and thwarting Zam Wesell's assassination attempts on her.
- He tracks down Jango Fett to Kamino, discovers the clone army commissioned for the Republic, and alerts the Council.
- Tracks down Jango Fett's location to Geonosis that involves a factory of Battle Droids being made and informs the Jedi Order about it.
- When Count Dooku offers Obi-Wan a chance to join him, he refuses.
- Teams up with hundreds of Jedi and clone troopers to fight against the droid army.
- Tries to defeat Count Dooku and tells Anakin not to rush into battle.
The Clone Wars[]
- He bravely fights alongside his troops and fellow Jedi in the Clone Wars, even personally going undercover to rescue dozens of slaves as well as the Chancellor. He also, along with Ahsoka Tano and Anakin, help train farmers to defend themselves against Hondo's pirates.
- He saves Dooku from falling at Hondo's fortress despite the fact that they are foes.
- When he is on Mandalore, he tries to peacefully talk to one of the Death Watch soldiers and only defends himself and feels shocked that he chooses to kill himself.
- He criticizes Anakin for killing Tal Merrik mercilessly and treating his death so casually, despite Merrik harming Satine and planning to blow up the ship.
- Helps save Tipoca City from Ventress and her Separatist forces.
- He refuses to give in to hatred or seek vengeance after Maul kills Satine.
- While he almost gives into the Dark Side while fighting Maul in the Clone Wars, he never falls to it later on so it's more of a heating-up period rather than being truly wrathful.
- Along with Anakin, he uncovers the secret of Sifo-Dyas' death and the creation of the Clone Army.
- He disagrees with the mission to have Quinlan Vos assassinate Count Dooku, believing it it against the Jedi Code. Then, when Vos is suspected to have betrayed the Jedi and the Jedi Council suggests executing him, Obi-Wan objects, believing Vos should be given a chance to prove himself and saying the Jedi Council is responsible for Vos betraying them.
- He saves Commander Cody's life from a Separatist tank.
- While at first, Obi-Wan fails to see the flaws in the Jedi Order as the Jedi allegiance is supposed to be to the Force, not to the Senate, which leads him to doing nothing to help clear Ahsoka's name when she is framed for the bombing of a Jedi Temple and believing Ahsoka let emotions cloud her judgement, he comes to realize the error of his thinking and later admits to Ahsoka that the Jedi Council isn’t always right.
- Near the end of the Clone Wars, Obi-Wan is the only Jedi who defended Anakin into spying on Palpatine, but he does it secretly instead of openly. He also encourages Ahsoka to talk to Anakin to take his special assignment and finally acknowledging that Ahsoka's departure is the Jedi Council's fault, while admitting that the Jedi Council is not always correct in their decisions.
- He secretly knew about Anakin and Padmé's secret relationship but never snitches on them. Obi-Wan thought about telling the Jedi Council about it, but he ultimately chose not to as he wanted Anakin to have the love life he could not have with Satine.
- Went with Anakin to fight in the Battle of Coruscant and defend the Republic from General Grievous.
Revenge of the Sith[]
- He rescues Chancellor Palpatine and risks his life to do so, having no idea that he is evil, and he does his very best to stop Count Dooku, taking out two of his droids before being incapacitated.
- He acknowledges that he hadn't intended to kill Dooku, slashing at him to disarm and neutralize the count, and that alive, he could have redeemed himself and been helpful to the Jedi Order (novelization).
- He protests against the Jedi Council forcing Anakin to spy on Palpatine, not wanting to put him in such an obviously problematic situation, and he still tells Anakin what the council asks of him.
- He accepts Anakin's apology for being arrogant and ungrateful.
- Despite being somewhat of a jerk to Anakin, he still tries to reason with Mace Windu by respectfully asking him if Anakin is not the chosen one who will destroy the Sith and bring balance to the Force, to which Windu replies "So the prophecy says."
- He tells Tion Medon to get Utapau's population to safety and to mobilize their warriors to fight alongside his clone troopers, who were about to arrive.
- He personally defeats General Grievous, preventing the monstrous cybernetic anomaly from further bringing forth the deaths and suffering of innocent people.
- He insists he and Yoda go back and dismantle Anakin's false message to lure any surviving Jedi to their deaths. He warns all the surviving Jedi to go into hiding and told them to have hope. Yoda is proud of him and acknowledges it would take a very long time for the clones to discover the recalibration, let alone change it.
- When he finds out Anakin was Palpatine's new apprentice named Darth Vader and is asked by Yoda to take down Vader, he is hesitant to do so because of how he sees him as his brother and would have bravely faced down Emperor Palpatine, but ultimately agrees to fight him so that he won't become an overwhelming force of evil to stop.
- He tells Padmé Amidala the grim truth about Anakin in the most sensitive way he possibly could, and when he saw she was pregnant, he immediately guesses Anakin is the father, heavily implying he has known they were in love for quite some time now and simply wasn't interested in hijacking their relationship.
- He tells Anakin, now known as Darth Vader, to stop Force choking Padmé, allowing her to live long enough to birth Luke and Leia, who go on to save the galaxy countless times.
- Even during his fight against Vader, he tries to reason with Vader, saying Palpatine is manipulating him and admits that he did fail in preventing Anakin from falling to the dark side. He even takes responsibility for Darth Vader's creation in the first place, admitting that he was wrong to think he could train Anakin as well as Yoda.
- As he had the upper hand on Vader, he insists on his former student to not risk his attack on him, showing that he still wants to give Vader some chance of redemption.
- He defeats Darth Vader and prevents the new Sith Lord from reaching his full potential. While Kenobi dismembers him, it was purely an act of self-defense and while he doesn’t simply finish him off while he is burning, Anakin deserved punishment for all of his heinous acts up until that point. Furthermore, Anakin's immolation is pure laser-guided karma putting it lightly. In addition, Vader would have been more powerful than Palpatine and Yoda if this did not happen, which would have made him practically unstoppable to all Jedi and Sith.
- After defeating Darth Vader and before the latter caught fire, Obi-Wan told Vader he saw him as a close friend and even a brother.
- He even was very sad at having to let Vader burn and abandon him.
- He brings Padmé to safety so that she can deliver her twins, once again ensuring two crucial galactic heroes could possibly be.
- He promises to watch over Anakin's son Luke on Tatooine so he would be safe and the Sith would hold no influence on his heart.
Obi-Wan Kenobi[]
- He gives advice to a Jedi hiding on Tatooine on how best to hide from the Empire.
- Despite the clones betraying him, he tries to help one by giving him some credits when he finds him living rough on the streets.
- He calls out a man mocking the Jedi by pretending to be one.
- He genuinely apologizes to Darth Vader for all that happened between them, even though Vader doesn't bother to listen but nonetheless absolved the former's guilt by claiming that he (Darth Vader) killed the person he used to be (Anakin Skywalker).
- He forgives Reva for all of her actions and assures her that redemption is still possible.
- He decides to allow Luke to be raised normally instead of being trained as a Jedi. He also tried to reason with his Uncle Owen about it, despite Owen denying it.
Rebels[]
- He convinces Ezra Bridger that his desire to destroy the Sith almost corrupted him and he should return home to his friends.
- He only kills Maul as he posed a threat to him protecting Luke on Tatooine, and even holds him in his arms to comfort him as he is dying. He also avenges the innocents that Maul murdered and puts him to rest.
- During his final moments, Obi-Wan holds Maul in his arms, comforting him by explaining that Luke is the chosen one and that he will avenge them and all those Sidious had wronged. Obi-Wan then gives Maul a burial, finally forgiving Maul and losing his hatred towards him in spite of everything Maul did to him and the people he loved.
A New Hope[]
- He had been watching over the Lars household to make sure Luke is safe since the very day of his birth.
- He saves Luke from Tusken Raiders and gently assures R2 that he will be okay.
- He begins training Luke in the ways of the Force, thus starting his path to become a Jedi and enabling Luke's later deeds.
- While he lies to Luke about his father and later justifies it by claiming it was true "from a certain point of view", he only does so to protect Luke from falling to the dark side for the same reasons that his father did, being too sentimental.
- He comforts Luke after the latter finds out his aunt and uncle are murdered, assuring him that their deaths were not his fault.
- He defends Luke from Ponda Baba and Cornelius Evazan, and while he cuts off Ponda Baba's arm, it is done out of self-defense as he was holding a blaster.
- He attempts to go to Alderaan so he can save Princess Leia from the Empire.
- He sacrifices himself so Luke and his friends could escape the Death Star.
- He continues mentoring Luke as a ghost, including helping him destroy the first Death Star and confront his father Vader.
The Empire Strikes Back[]
- He sends Luke to Dagobah so he can be trained by Yoda.
- He convinces a reluctant Yoda to train Luke by reminding him that he was just as angry and reckless as Luke when he was first taught by him.
Return of the Jedi[]
- He genuinely apologizes to Luke for hiding the secret of his father.
- Although he advocates for Luke to kill Vader, he does this only because he thinks Anakin was gone beyond redemption and killing Vader is the only way to stop the Empire's menace and bring back peace. He also congratulates Luke after he brought his father back from the dark side.
- He forgives Anakin for all his past actions due to redeeming himself to save his son from the Emperor.
The Last Jedi[]
- He encourages Luke to let go and become one with the Force, fully reconciling with his old apprentice.
The Rise of Skywalker[]
- He, along with Qui-Gon, Yoda, Luke and the rest of the Jedi, motivate Rey to end Palpatine's reign of terror once and for all.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- During the prequel trilogy and The Clone Wars, he was reckless, hypocritical, arrogant and a jerk towards Anakin at times, much to the latter's annoyance.
- In Attack of the Clones, he told Anakin to "learn his place" while the two were discussing the plan to protect Padmé Amidala, and he also yelled at him to "come to your senses" when Anakin wanted to leave the ship to save her on Geonosis. Despite knowing of Anakin's attachment issues, he did not show much concern for his emotions towards her.
- In The Clone Wars, he never told Anakin that he faked his own death to go undercover as a bounty hunter, resulting in him not only nearly getting himself and/or Ahsoka killed, but also increased Anakin's mistrust towards the Jedi.
- In Revenge of the Sith, his arrogance in killing General Grievous is especially disturbing. Although Grievous' death was well-deserved, Obi-Wan took sadistic pleasure in the act, as he smiled while shooting Grievous to death as he screamed, then made a petty remark about blasters being an "uncivilized" weapon, ignorantly tossing it towards Grievous's corpse.
- He often slips into the dogma of the Jedi Order, constantly siding with the Council even when he knows they are in the wrong. For example, he never freed Anakin's mother or helped Anakin in clearing Ahsoka's name, which led to her almost being executed. He also agrees with the Council's belief that they need to focus all efforts on the war while letting people suffer, which Ahsoka called him out on.
- While he regretted all of those decisions, it doesn't prevent the fact that Obi-Wan knew better but still choose to do wrong unlike Anakin, Ahsoka, and his master Qui-Gon who choose to help others despite knowing the Council will be angry with them. Additionally, Obi-Wan often ignored how wrongful the Jedi Council often treated Anakin which led him to the dark side in the first place.
- Furthermore, although they later make amends as shown in The Last Jedi, Luke resented Obi-Wan for his lies and half-truths despite Obi-Wan's good intentions. This was exacerbated by Obi-Wan's cynicism which became apparent when Luke departed to save his friends instead of continuing his training under Yoda's tutelage in The Empire Strikes Back — a stark contrast with Yoda himself who warned him, but did not stop him.
- He has made a few morally questionable decisions during the Clone Wars:
- At the Battle of Christophsis, he initiated surrender negotiations solely as a "ruse of war" to stall for time.
- He allowed Rex to kill Agruss when he was unarmed simply because Rex was not bound to the same Jedi Code that forbade killing unarmed people.
- He hesitated to stop the terrorist Tal Merrik because of his personal feelings for Satine, potentially putting hundreds of lives at risk to avoid ruining his relationship with her.
- He was aware of Anakin's forbidden relationship with Padmé Amidala, but he chose to ignore it rather than effectively counsel him, which left Anakin more vulnerable to Palpatine's manipulation.
- During his undercover mission posing as Rako Hardeen, he engaged in criminal activities to maintain his cover, including stabbing a prisoner with a fork in a Republic prison cafeteria to establish "street cred".
