~ Natsuki's most famous quote. |
“ | Look...Yuri. You really are the most talented here. And...And you're going to help to make the event a lot more fun and welcoming. I mean the cupcakes will probably help a lot too...But you're gonna make the atmosphere special. That'll be really important for the way that people feel during the performances. So... you need to stop being dumb and give yourself a little more credit! | „ |
~ Natsuki to Yuri. |
Natsuki is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Yuri) of the visual novel, Doki Doki Literature Club!. She is Yuri's best friend and former rival. She is one of the two tritagonists in the game's Act 1 and Act 4, and the deuteragonist in Act 2. Natsuki is also one of the three characters for whom the player can write poems, as well as one of the five members of the Literature Club.
Natsuki is introduced to play off the trope of small-but-feisty tsundere girl, as discussed by Monika in Act 3. Natsuki lives in a tragic and phlegmatic household with a strict and magnanimous father and a deceased mother, whose death results in her father's post-traumatic stress disorder and becoming an alcoholic, as well as becoming emotionally abusive at occasions, before becoming physically abusive in Act 2. Her father finds manga childish, so Natsuki joined the literature club to store her manga collection in order to evade dilemma with her father if he caught her reading it.
Her Good Ranking[]
What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Good?[]
In general[]
- Although Natsuki is the embodiment of a tsundere with serious anger issues, Natsuki possesses a softer, more considerate and gracious interior upon insecurity. Plus, it is also quite clear in the game that her arrogant demeanor is a facade to hide her insecurities.
- Natsuki shows high loyalty towards her friends, even Monika, despite being the game's main antagonist who is shrouded in suspense over the course of the game.
- Even when she has obvious issues with her anger, she is not entertained with fighting nor arguing with people, like Yuri. She also almost typically apologizes for the problems at the end.
- Natsuki's factors of possessiveness and assertiveness are due to her implied abusive and heavily strict father. However, that does not mean Natsuki despises her father, as he is far too tragic to be even considered a villainous benchmark, as the death of Natsuki's mother results in her father's post-traumatic stress disorder and becoming an alcoholic, as well as becoming emotionally abusive at occasions, before becoming physically abusive in Act 2, the latter of which is due to Monika's manipulations. Thus, Natsuki's abrasive nature is a coping mechanism to retain it a secret from everybody.
- Even when she and Yuri are having their programming sabotaged by Monika in Act 2, she resists as best she can and tries to ask the protagonist for help, and does not give in to corruption, like Yuri did, and above all, preventing herself from ending up like Yuri and Sayori, who had to suffer gruesome and inevitable deaths from Monika's corruptions upon confessing their love to the protagonist, thus leading to Monika deleting Natsuki at the end of Act 2 and progressing to Act 3, only for Monika to meet her defeat, thus making Natsuki posthumously admirable, as her deletion is what led to Monika's fate at the end of Act 3, forcing her to restore her friends and everything in Act 4.
Her actions[]
- In Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!, she regrets her fight with Yuri and accepts her apology.
- If the player chooses to call Sayori while Yuri and Natsuki are fighting, the two will eventually understand each other.
- If the player chooses Natsuki's route, she progressively reduces her emotional defenses and becomes much friendlier towards the protagonist.
- In Act 2, she resists the corruption caused by Monika and writes a message disguised as a poem to the MC, asking him to convince Yuri to see a therapist, trying to ensure that Monika does not find out about this.
What Prevents Her From Being Pure Good?[]
- Despite being the most admirable member of Doki Doki Literature Club and subverting from most of her corrupting factors, Natsuki still remains a tsundere, so she retains her arrogance that prevent her from being qualified as Pure Good. Even in her heroic mindsets during Act 1, she still manages to have these corresponding moments, such as teasing Yuri about her breasts while Natsuki and the latter are fighting, getting wrathful at the protagonist if he prefers Yuri's poems rather than her, and throwing a cookie in Sayori's face. However, most of these moments are meant to be laughable and she almost typically apologizes for them afterwards, making this a minor prevention.
Trivia[]
- Natsuki is the only character in Doki Doki Literature Club! who is qualified Near Pure Good so far, since the other club members are too inconsistent (Monika) or standard (Sayori, Yuri and the protagonist) in their heroism.
- She was originally classified as a Heroic Benchmark, but when her brilliance in attempting to ask the Protagonist for help to assist Yuri deal with her mental health while having fewer resources than Monika and/or the protagonist was pointed out, she was eventually approved as Near Pure Good.
