Murphy is a supporting character of the We Bare Bears franchise.
Like her fellow Poppy Rangers, Murphy is an amazonic and adventurous little girl scout/troop/park ranger who has a close friendship with Ranger Tabes and the three bears, more especially Grizzly, and aspires to grow up and become a geologist in the future. Murphy shows high commitment to her aforementioned fellow Poppy Rangers, but Murphy is more enthusiastic and optimistic, yet also more hyperaware and intelligent in comparison to the other Poppy Rangers. Thus, she seems to offer the most amount of reassurance and motivation to Grizz out of the rest of the Poppies. Outside of her career as a park ranger like Ranger Tabes, Murphy is typically seen casually playing with the other Poppy Rangers and having fun, more especially by having tissue and pillow fights with the other Poppy Rangers, or flying kites with them.
Murphy is voiced by Stella Balick-Karrer.
Her Good Ranking[]
What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Good?[]
In general[]
- Murphy is a supportive, affable and faithful girl who is heavily beneficial and brings determination in numerous situations, showing high loyalty towards her fellow Poppy Rangers and more especially, Ranger Tabes and Grizz Bear, and Murphy is almost never overconfident and/or incompetent in her heroism compared to the two, respectively, as with the other Poppies.
- Murphy shows constant awareness of possible danger ahead among the Poppies, and she is typically the one who warns the bears and Ranger Tabes to be aware of it as well, shown when Murphy fearfully warned Tabes that "crumbling walls are a sign of erosion" (which indicates that the Howling Mountain Cave is possibly polluting, and is not safe to roam around in for a long time), and she almost typically equips a flashlight in case of darkness and something threatening about to endanger her and the other Poppies, as shown when she and the other Poppies embark through the darker and eerie route of the Howling Mountain Cave with Grizz and Tabes in paranoia.
- Despite showing clear awareness of Grizz's moral flaws, Murphy builds a huge friendship towards Grizz Bear, even though she was astonished to encounter him for the first time, equivalent to Chloe's first interaction with the three bears. Additionally, Murphy even refers him as "Bear Guy," "Mr. Bear" or "Mr. Bear Guy" rather than just aliasing him as a traditional bear animal by basically calling him "Bear," like the other Poppies, which references Grizz and his fellow bear brothers' philanthropic interaction with the human race.
- Murphy typically follows all of Ranger Tabes and Grizzly's commands, even with the severe consequences within their corresponding commands.
- Among the rest of the Poppy Rangers, Murphy has the most patience and least grudge with Grizz and his incompetence, has the least amount of corrupting factors among the Poppy Rangers (aside from Parker); examples include arrogance (Wallace and Nguyen) and being lethal (Diaz), and is not as heavily lethal as the other Poppies, even in their primeval and psychotic states in Lord of the Poppies. Furthermore, what increases the level of Murphy's pure friendship with Grizz is that even before the Poppies cheerleaded for Grizz to defeat the Ivy Rangers and Ranger Zhao (as well as offering Grizz a positive influence to reform himself from his traditional incompetence), Murphy still had the passion to encourage Grizz through his lack of skill in kickball during the Peewee Ranger Games by saying to him, "From now on, we'll root for you no matter what!" in a sign of pure kindness, which outright shows Murphy having the least amount of grudge against Grizz's traditional incompetence, and this line is so affectionate that Grizz returns to facing the Ivy Rangers and successfully wins the game against them and Ranger Zhao.
- The only time Murphy shows visible grudge against Grizz is his lack of skill in kickball during the Peewee Ranger Games and foiling the Poppy Rangers' winning streak to defeat the Ivy Rangers and Ranger Zhao, saying that she and the other Poppies "might have had a chance without Bear Guy," in which she immediately becomes remorseful of afterwards.
- Murphy is a voice of pure reason in several occasions:
- When Ranger Tabes encourages Murphy and the other Poppies to explore the Howling Mountain Cave for the Spelunking Badge, Murphy and the other Poppies were reluctant on it and tried to reason with her, fearing the danger they will get themselves into (and sided with Grizz in deciding to take the safer route of the cave), such as being eventually stranded in the cave, and Ranger Tabes felt insecure and pessimistic when they did get stranded, but Murphy encouraged her that she is still an excellent forest ranger, stating that she and the Poppies want to be "just like her," motivating Tabes into optimism and getting herself, Grizz, Murphy and the other Poppy Rangers out of the cave.
- Murphy even warned Ranger Tabes out of fear that crumbling walls are a sign of erosion, indicating that the Howling Mountain Cave is potentially polluting.
- After the Ranger War in the episode, Lord of the Poppies, Murphy was reluctant on eating Grizz, even though she and the other Poppies kidnapped him in the first place to do so, but this was out of immense starvation that comes sheer insanity, and even Grizz himself allowed Murphy and the Poppies to devour him in order to keep them alive, so this is understandable.
- Despite being dismissive of Grizz and his incompetence in the annual Peewee Ranger Games, Murphy eventually motivates and encourage him to defeat the Ivy Rangers, and feels remorseful of dismissing Grizz and his initial lack of skill in the annual game, more especially through cheerleading, in which Grizz reforms his incompetence because of this.
Her actions[]
- Alongside the other Poppies, Murphy saved Wallace from Hurricane Hal, even if it endangered herself.
- Even before the Poppies cheerleaded for Grizz to defeat the Ivy Rangers and Ranger Zhao (as well as offering Grizz a positive influence to reform himself from his traditional incompetence), Murphy still had the passion to encourage Grizz through his lack of skill in kickball during the Peewee Ranger Games by saying to him, "From now on, we'll root for you no matter what!" in a sign of pure kindness, which not only outright shows Murphy having the least amount of grudge against Grizz's traditional incompetence, this line is so affectionate that Grizz returns to facing the Ivy Rangers and successfully wins the game against them and Ranger Zhao, and reforms himself from his traditional incompetence over the course of the series.
- While reassuring Tabes after getting stranded in the Howling Mountain Cave with her, Grizz and the other Poppies, Murphy states to Tabes in a fit of kindness that she and the other Poppies want to be "just like her" (a professional and heroic park ranger), motivating Tabes into getting herself, Grizz and the Poppies out of the Howling Mountain Cave before it collapses onto them.
- While Ranger Tabes and Grizz are more admirable than Murphy and the other Poppies throughout the series, both of them have far more resources than Murphy as Tabes and Grizz boast almost superhuman physical strength, and the latter even possesses sharp claws and the ability to unleash a loud and devastating roar. Meanwhile, Murphy is just a little girl with genius-level intelligence and hyperawareness combined with skill in hand-to-hand combat.
- Murphy, alongside the other Poppy Rangers and their fellow commander, Ranger Tabes, assisted Grizz Bear, Ice Bear and Panda Bear in defeating Agent Trout, leading to his deserved imprisonment and preventing Trout from unlawfully capturing and torturing the three bears.
What Prevents Her From Being Pure Good?[]
- Despite her heightened level of admirable actions throughout the series, Murphy still manages to fail the admirable standards to Grizz, who saved dozens of endangered grizzly bears from a wildfire, and Ranger Tabes, who prevented Norm from annihilating the forest, and summoned the Ranger Con Rangers to imprison Norm to prevent the latter from causing even more chaos, and performed even more admirable actions throughout the series, among others.
- Even with Murphy's aforementioned loyalty towards the other Poppies, Murphy is still eager and at least jerkish enough to still argue and bicker with the other Poppies from time to time.
- Despite having the least amount of corrupting factors among the Poppies, Murphy is still prone to corruption as he shows notable moments of being dissociative and lethal to be qualified as PG, as shown in the infamous scene in the episode, Lord of the Poppies, where she and the other Poppies fall into insanity after succumbing to immense starvation and having had enough of Grizz's incompetence in attempting to feed them, going as far as turning against Grizz and attempting to devour him. To make this worse, Murphy is also shown to be a lethal control freak, as shown during the Ranger War, Murphy insulted and brutally fought the other Poppies for the guidebook to attain leadership, just to rule over the other Poppies out of ruthless abuse of power.
- Murphy traumatized Grizz by jumpscaring him while taking a huge bite from an otherwise inedible wooden log after she and the other Poppies become psychotic from too much starvation in Lord of the Poppies.
Trivia[]
- Along with the other Poppies, Murphy was originally classified as a Heroic Benchmark, but when the brilliance of her saving Wallace from the Hurricane Hal, and offering a positive influence to Grizz and Ranger Tabes with even fewer resources was pointed out, Murphy was eventually approved as Near Pure Good.
