Mufasa is one of the overarching protagonists of Disney's The Lion King franchise.
He is the older brother of Scar, the husband of Sarabi, the father of Simba and the grandfather of Kion and Kiara. In the first film, he was the current ruler of the Pride Lands but his younger brother Scar killed him and usurped his throne. His soul was saved and became a spirit to guide Simba to defeat Scar giving him rightful heir to the throne. He is also willing to help his grandchildren bring peace to the Pride Lands.
He was voiced by the late James Earl Jones in the films (including the 2019 remake film) and in The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar, and by Gary Anthony Williams in The Lion Guard.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- Before his assassination, it was implied that he has been protecting the Pride Lands from many threats as its king, including the hyenas.
- While he disallowed the hyenas from living or hunting in the Pride Lands with the lions, it was rightfully done so because of their gluttony, as Scar’s reign showed the Circle of Life thrown out of balance from overhunting.
- Even after Scar killed his lion guard and lost the roar, he still allowed Scar to live in the Pride Lands despite his crimes, hoping he would be a better person (which sadly does not happen)
- He guided his son, Simba, on his journey to becoming king, explaining to him how the circle of life works.
- When Zazu told him that the hyenas were attacking in the Pride Lands, Mufasa quickly decides to go after them and send them back to the Elephant Graveyard.
- When Simba and Nala were trapped in the Elephant Graveyard, Mufasa comes to their rescue and stops Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed from trying to eat them.
- After leaving the Elephant Graveyard, Mufasa tells Zazu to escort Nala so he could talk to Simba alone.
- Disappointed in Simba for disobeying his orders not to go to the Elephant Graveyard, he rightfully calls out Simba for recklessly putting himself as well as Nala in danger. However, he chooses not to punish Simba for the ordeal after Simba confesses to wanting to prove himself brave. Instead, he explains that being brave as putting your fears aside when needed, not going around looking for trouble. Even after that, Mufasa admits that he was afraid of losing him before playing with him to teach him a lesson.
- He told Simba about the Great Kings of the Past and tells him to look at the stars if he ever feels lost.
- When Scar tells him that there is a stampede in the gorge, Mufasa quickly goes down there to save Simba before his death.
- He encourages Simba to go back to the Pride Lands and fight Scar to take his rightful place as king.
- While he doesn't tell Simba that Scar killed him this was because he wanted his son to simply take his place as king and not be focused on revenge.
- He convinced Rafiki to get Kiara and Kovu together so they can stop a war between the Outsiders and Pridelanders.
- When Kion became leader of the Lion Guard, Mufasa gave him advice whenever he needs it and guides him to becoming a great leader.
- Even though Scar betrayed and killed him, he doesn’t show any hatred towards him, as he encourages Simba only to take his place as king, encourages Scar’s heir Kovu being paired with Kiara (making him become the next king consort), and shows no anger when even talking about him. From “Can’t Wait To Be Queen”, where he advises Kion to support his sister, he possibly believes things could have happened differently if he had done better for his brother.
- Although Simba saved the Pride Lands, Kiara and Kovu ended the feud between the Pridelanders and Outsiders, and Kion defended the Pride Lands and saved the Tree of Life, Mufasa still stands out for having less resources while being the main reason why Simba returned to the Pride Lands and stopped Scar's reign of terror, Kiara and Kovu fell in love, and how Kion learned to defeat Scar’s spirit all making the admirable standards high. If it wasn't for him, the Pride Lands would have continued to rot, the warring prides doomed to bloodshed, and Kion would have been tricked into destroying the Pride Lands.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- He can be jerkish to Scar, such as the time when he nicknamed his brother after his injury (which would eventually lead to his own downfall at his claws) and when he laughed when Zazu said that he would make a nice throw rug.
- He had a mischievous moment where he forced Zazu to be the target for Simba's pouncing lesson and knew of the harm he is going to put him through; however, since it was played for laughs and Zazu wasn't injured by it, this is a minor prevention.
Trivia[]
- He was removed from Near Pure Good and was demoted to Heroic Benchmark for failing the admirable standards too hard, but it was reevaluated that he was the reason Simba returned to the Pride Lands, so he was re-approved.
- He, Tramp and Zeus are the only parents from the Disney Animated Canon to be NPG. And ironically, their respective sons are Pure Good.
