Near Pure Good Hero Wiki

I have no sympathy for criminals, but family is a different story.
~ Garp expressing his reluctance to leave Ace to his fate.
You wanna become a scumbag?
~ Garp to King Stelley about wanting to become a Celestial Dragon when revealing he was never loyal towards the World Nobles.

Monkey D. Garp is one of the major heroic antagonists of One Piece. He is the father of Monkey D. Dragon, the world's most wanted criminal, as well as the grandfather of Monkey D. Luffy, the series protagonist (who is now an Emperor) and the adoptive grandfather of Portgas D. Ace. He was a Vice Admiral of the Marines, but resigned the position after Ace's death, becoming an instructor for the Marines. After rescuing his student Koby, Garp was imprisoned by the Blackbeard Pirates attempting to use him as a bargaining chip to negotiate with the World Government.

He is voiced by Hiroshi Naka in Japanese and by Brian Mathis in the dub.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

  • Became a Marine to protect innocent people from the wrath of the pirates.
  • Although he initially sided with the government in the God Valley incident, it was only because he had no idea about the massacre that was taking place. Once he realized this, he angrily called Sengoku to demand an explanation.
  • After seeing that his Saturn (which was possessed by Imu but Garp didn't know) was killing both pirates and marines, Garp attacked him without hesitation even though he was his superior.
  • Teamed up with Gol D. Roger to defeat Rocks D. Xebec (who is turned into a demon by Imu).
    • He agreed with Roger when he called Imu's affiliation with the World Goverment afffront to ''justice''.
    • He expressed symphathy for Xebec, exclaiming that he can feel his frustration over losing his free will to Imu.
  • Fought Big Mom and Kaido several times after Xebec's defeat.
  • Refused the rank of Admiral due to Admirals having to obey the Celestial Dragons, whom Garp (much like his son and grandson) dislikes due to their cruelty. He even referred to the Celestial Dragons as scumbags.
  • Him and Sengoku fought Shiki the Golden Lion which decimated half of Marineford, defeating the pirate's reign of terror once and for all.
  • Adopted Ace on Roger's request while Roger was captured and awaiting execution.
  • After Dragon formed the Revolutionaries, Garp took care of his infant son Luffy and shielded him from learning about his father's activities across the world.
  • Protected Ace and Luffy from both Roger and Dragon's enemies in the shadows.
  • Tried to make Ace and Luffy into ideal Marines, only to protect them from becoming pirates and getting into the World Government's radar.
  • Gave Ace and Luffy to Curly Dadan for safekeeping due to Garp's Marine duties.
  • Helped Coby and Helmeppo into becoming capable Marines.
  • Heavily blamed himself for being hard on Ace and leading him to become a pirate.
  • Despite opposing Luffy, he gracefully accepts getting punched by Luffy if it meant he could save Ace due to Garp's love for his grandsons gotten the better of him.
  • Was secretly proud of Luffy for successfully freeing Ace, and when Akainu fatally injured him, Garp was willing to risk his reputation to take revenge, only to be restrained by Sengoku.
  • Assisted Sengoku in keeping the Blackbeard Pirates from wreaking havoc at the Marineford.
  • Garp retired and became an instructor.
  • Garp insulted King Stelly and (much like both his son and grandson) hates the Celestial Dragons and called them as scumbags.
  • Escorted the Fishman Island delegates to their island after Mjosgard attacked Charloss in order to ensure their safety during the Revolutionary Army's assault upon the Celestial Dragons.
  • Appealed to Neptune and Shirahoshi to not let the news regarding Sabo to negatively color their opinions on humanity.
  • Garp sent out to rescue Koby from the Blackbeard Pirates, allowing SWORD and Tashigi to come aboard on his ship.
  • Attempting to convince Kuzan to return to the Marines. He decided to fight Kuzan and bring him back into the Marines by force.
  • Surrendered himself to the Blackbeard Pirates and gotten imprisoned in order to allow Koby and his contingent to escape.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • While this is mostly played for humorous blunder, he hit Luffy, Ace and Sabo several times while training them, leading to both Ace and Luffy fearing him.
    • His methods of training his grandchildren are rather harsh; he threw a young Luffy in a deep ravine, sent him flying high by tying him on balloons, and also throwing him into a perilous forest to become a "man".
    • He also sent the two of them to live with bandits, which is quite irresponsible, even though Dadan ended up taking care of them.
    • He also kept forcing his desires onto his grandchildren and forbidding them to be pirates, but due to his "parenting" they ended up being pirates anyway to be free from him, all while refusing to admit that he played a part in their decisions.
  • He can be quite arrogant sometimes, though it's not as extreme as his grandson's ego. This is also minor as it is not only mostly played for laughs, but he genuinely becomes selfless when his allies are in danger of lives are at stake.
    • His pride as a Marine kept him from listening to others perspectives or seeing and acknowledging alternative outcomes of getting his friends and family to join the Navy, as Ace told him that it was unlikely that he and Luffy would be accepted into the Navy due to their relations to Roger and Dragon respectively, even if they did want to join, or that Kuzan wouldn't want to join due to his disillusionment of the world government.
  • Appears hypocritical, being very blunt, he can be lethal using minor tactics to his enemies.

Trivia[]

  • He is the only member of the Marines who qualifies as Near Pure Good, though others may qualify in the future.
