Near Pure Good Hero Wiki

The prosecution is ready, Your Honor.
~ Edgeworth's usual introduction in the court.
It doesn't matter how many underhanded tricks a person uses... The truth will always find a way to make itself known. The only thing we can do is fight with the knowledge we hold and everything we have. Erasing the paradoxes one by one... It's never easy... We claw and scratch for every inch. But we will always eventually reach that one single truth. This I promise you.
~ Edgeworth's views on finding the truth.
I have one duty, and one duty alone: to pursue the truth. If being a prosecutor means I must turn a blind eye to the very truth before me... ...then I will gladly shed the title to be free!
~ Edgeworth being willing to throw away his prosecutor's badge if that means proving Kay Faraday's innocence.

Miles Edgeworth is one of the two deuteragonists (together with Apollo Justice) of the Ace Attorney franchise (also known as Gyakuten Saiban/Turnabout Trial in Japan), being the tritagonist of the original trilogy, the main protagonist of the Investigations duology and a major character in Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice.

He is Phoenix Wright's childhood best friend and primary rival in court, taking the role of prosecutor to Phoenix's defense. While initially starting as an arrogant man only interested in winning cases at all costs, Phoenix is eventually capable of reaching out to him, making him reflect on his life choices and thus making him change for the better. He eventually becomes one of the series' most noble heroes, even getting the position of Chief Prosecutor of Los Angeles.

He is voiced in Japanese by Tatsuro Iwamoto in the Phoenix Wright Trilogy, Eiji Takemoto in the Apollo Justice Trilogy, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and Project X Zone 2, and Masashi Tamaki in the anime. In English, he is voiced by Seon King in the Phoenix Wright Trilogy, Kyle Hebert in the Apollo Justice Trilogy, Mark Healy in Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, and Christopher Wehkamp (as an adult) and Apphia Yu (as a child) in the anime.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

In general/Background[]

  • While he did start as an arrogant and smug rival who wanted to solely obtain "Guilty" verdicts in the first game, he ended up subverting most of his corrupting qualities and becoming a genuine hero interested in finding the truth at all costs.
  • Back in elementary school, he defended Phoenix Wright when he was falsely accused of stealing lunch money, proving that it was Larry Butz instead.
  • He tried to comfort a young Kay Faraday after she lost her father.
  • He tried to expose Calisto Yew as the culprit behind Byrne Faraday's and Mack Rell's murder, right before she escaped from the court.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney[]

  • When framed of the murder of Robert Hammond, his testimony in court helped Phoenix Wright in exposing von Karma as the true culprit behind the murder and the DL-6 Incident.
  • He worked together with Phoenix Wright to expose Damon Gant as the murderer of Neil Marshall and Bruce Goodman.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice for All[]

  • He reached out to Phoenix Wright when he found out that the former was being blackmailed with Maya Fey's life and forced to defend Matt Engarde in court.
  • He helped Phoenix in gaining some time before Dick Gumshoe and Franziska von Karma obtained key evidence that allowed them to break Engarde's contract with Shelly de Killer, thus liberating Maya from the latter.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations[]

  • He investigated the Hazakura temple while Phoenix was healing in the hospital and represented him in court as a defense, thus playing a role in exposing Morgan Fey's and Dahlia Hawthorne's murder plot against Maya Fey.

Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth[]

  • He exposed Cammy Meele as the killer of Akbey Hicks.
  • He exposed Lance Amano as the killer of Colin Devorae, even being willing to go after his wealthy father to prove his guilt.
  • He exposed Jacques Portsman after he broke in his own office and killed Buddy Faith.
  • He eventually confronted Shih-na, revealing her to be Calisto Yew and finally getting her arrested after evading justice for many years.
  • He eventually took down Quercus Alba and his smuggling ring, liberating Zheng-Fa and Allebahst from an economic disaster and allowing the reunification of Cohdopia.

Ace Attorney Investigations 2: Prosecutor's Gambit[]

  • He exposed the fake assassination plot of Di-Jun Wang (actually his body double) and the murder of Bastian Rook at the hands of Bronco Knight.
  • He exposed Fifi Laguarde as the murderer of Bronco Knight.
  • He eventually discovered the truth behind the IS-7 Incident, finding out that Carmelo Gusto was the true culprit behind it and thus proving once and for all that Samson Tangaroa was innocent all along, freeing him from prison.
  • He tried to help an amnesiac Kay Faraday to bring back her memories, together with Dick Gumshoe.
  • He confronted Excelsius Winner and the Committee for Prosecutorial Excellence after they tried to frame Kay Faraday as the murderer of Rosie Ringer, even being willing to throw away his prosecutor's badge to find the truth.
  • He eventually exposed Excelsius Winner, together with Verity Gavèlle, for his crimes.
  • He gave back to Kay her promise notebook, thus healing her amnesia.
  • He comforted a traumatized Eustace Winner after he was kidnapped by his own father.
  • He helped Eustace in proving the guilt of Excelsius in court.
  • He confronted and exposed Simeon Saint as the Mastermind behind all the crimes in the game.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies[]

  • He watched over Phoenix Wright after the latter was disbarred and falsely framed of committing forgery.
  • Having become Chief Prosecutor, he kept an eye over Simon Blackquill, who was on the death row after he willingly took the blame for Metis Cykes' murder.
  • He helped Phoenix Wright in exposing the Phantom as the true culprit behind DL-6 Incident, thus saving Simon Blackquill from getting the death penalty and proving the innocence of Athena Cykes, who was falsely framed of the murder of both Metis Cykes and Clay Terran.
  • He purged the legal system from its various corrupt lawyers, thus playing a key role in fighting the Dark Age of the Law.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice[]

  • He helped Phoenix Wright and his allies in getting a plane to the Kingdom of Khura'in, thus allowing them to overthrow Ga'ran's despotic regime and prove her guilt in the murder of Jove Justice and Inga Karkhuul Khura'in.
  • He helped Phoenix Wright in proving the innocence of Ellen Wyatt, even attending her marriage with Sorin Sprocket afterwards.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • While he did subvert the vast majority of his corrupting qualities through the course of the series, he still retains some moments of arrogance and jerkiness, such as acting unnecessarily cold towards Athena Cykes and Ellen Wyatt during their trials and showing little sympathy towards their situations, going as far as having no issues with making them panic (even mocking the latter). While his job requires some pragmatism certain times and he is still willing to work together with Phoenix in finding the truth anyway, holding no grudges if proven wrong, these moments are still a bit too much to make him count as Pure Good.
