Sometimes I miss how things were, but nothing stays the same forever. We've all got an inner beast. We've all got a messy, loud, weird part of ourselves hidden away. And a lot of us never let it out. But I did. How about you?
~ Mei's last lines in the film.

Meilin "Mei" Lee is the main protagonist of Pixar's 25th animated feature film, Turning Red.

She is a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian girl, who, as it has happened for generations in her family, gets the ability to transform into a red panda whenever she gets stressed or feel strong emotions, due to something an ancient ansecstor of hers did to protect her home. Mei has to deal with this "curse" as she also grows up and faces her overbearing, control freak (though still well intentioned) mother, Ming Lee.

She is voiced by Rosalie Chiang.

Her Good Ranking[]

What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Good?[]

  • She loves her family and always tries to help her mother in everything. While Ming was too controlling and demanding, their relationship as mother and daughter was still loving, and Mei liked to help her mother.
  • She made protests at her school defending endangered species.
  • Despite her mother's opinion on it, she helps her friends find a way to go to the 4*Town Concert, as it is something they wanted a lot.
  • Went to Tyler's party to help animate his birthday, despite them being rivals and disliking each other, even if it was probably for the money.
  • After seeing the Red Panda's spirit frightened, she decided against banishing it, staying with it and going to the concert.
  • She reconciled with Tyler despite everything they went through.
  • Once her mother devastated the Skydome, breaking in and endangering a lot of people, Mei confronted her, being essential to, eventually, with the help of her friends, family, and even 4*Town, restoring Ming back to normal.
    • Even if her mother wasn't directly attempting to hurt anyone, she was still causing a lot of reckless chaos in her relentless pursuit of Mei, and, indirectly, endangering lots of people.
  • She understood her mother's inner trauma, and made peace with her while they were in the Spirit Realm, giving her the reassurance she needed and allowing her to move on.
  • She raised money to help rebuild the Skydome as it was, very indirectly, Mei's fault.
  • Completely made peace with her mother and is on good terms with her, despite their still existing disagreements.

What Prevents Her From Being Pure Good?[]

  • She has some temper issues, culminating in her attacking Tyler at his own party. However, those are heavily influenced by the Panda Spirit, and not only does she feel a lot of remorse for hurting Tyler, she seems to have mostly grown out of her anger attacks at the end of the movie.
  • She has some jerkish moments, such as her reciprocally hateful relationship with Tyler, or busting out of the Panda banishment ceremony to go to the concert instead of explaining her resons to keep her panda.
  • Her most admirable action relies of Fridge Brilliance as we don't know how dangerous Ming's reckless attack on the Skydome was, or how many people in close vicinity could have been harmed. However, preventing a restless, kaiju-like Red Panda from rampaging around the city is still admirable, as it ensures no one can be potentially put in danger, so it is a minor prevention.
