Max is the main protagonist of The Secret Life of Pets franchise.
He is Katie's pet dog who was distrustful at Duke until the climax of the first film where both of them had to elude a band of animals that want revenge on humanity for abandoning them and Animal Control and later had to watch Katie and Chuck's child, Liam where he soon learns bravery from Rooster.
In the first film, he is voiced by Louis C.K., and Patton Oswalt in the second film, who also voiced Remy.

- He was delighted to have Katie adopted him.
- He is shown to be good friends with Chloe, Mel, Buddy, Norman, Sweetpea, and Gidget.
- Chloe also points out that he got her unstuck from the curtains and also dissuading her from eating Sweetpea, and taught Mel and Buddy how to sit comfortably after their vet appointments.
- While he was distrustful at Duke and wanting to get rid of him at first, he begins to warm up to him later in the film and no longer acts envious towards him.
- He seeks out Chloe for advice on how to tame Duke.
- He tries to stop Duke from abandoning him in the alleyway.
- Despite getting mad at Duke for getting them impounded he quickly feels sorry for him when he points out that he is going to die upon returning.
- While he and Duke lied about hating humans and killing Katie, it was necessary so Snowball would free them plus saving them from being killed in an explosion.
- He cheers Duke on when he is fighting off the abandoned pets.
- Even though it was an accident, he apologizes to the abandoned pets for the Viper's death.

- When Duke revealed that he had an owner named Fred who never returned for him, Max decides to take Duke back to his former house, knowing that Fred still loves him.

- When given the chance to escape, he immediately chases after the animal control truck to save Duke instead despite his argument with him.
- While he did help steal a bus, it's unknown whether he was aware of the wrong in doing this, as it's possible that he simply didn't know that stealing was wrong, plus it was necessary so he and Snowball can save Duke from being euthanized.
- He tries to explain to the abandoned pets that Snowball teamed up with him.
- He goes to save Duke from drowning in the truck, plus showing he's willing to risk his life to save what he cares about.
- He tells Gidget how he feels for her now after defending him from the abandoned pets.
- He's the one who redeemed Snowball at the end of the film as Molly adopts Snowball and he became a pet in the sequel.
The Secret Life of Pets 2[]
- He and Duke quickly grew fond of Chuck when Katie meets him.
- While he was uneasy towards Liam and tries to avoid him, he quickly warms up to him when the latter hugs him and says that he loves him.
- He along Duke teaches Liam how to walk.
- He does everything he can to protect Liam from any danger that comes by.
- He has Gidget watch his favorite toy while he goes on a trip.
- Despite being disinterested in the farm and Rooster, he later begins to appreciate them after rescuing a lamb with the help of Rooster.
- He risks his life to save a lamb from falling off a cliff.
- Despite being shocked to see Hu in his apartment, he quickly realizes he is not a threat and tries to defend him from Sergei and his wolves.
- He defeats Sergei and saves Hu from him, plus putting an end to Sergei's abuse towards animals.
- He allows Liam to go to preschool and decides to help him be brave.
- While he was a coward and overprotective to Liam, he subverts this when he learns from Rooster and became more brave and decides to give Liam the freedom he deserves.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- Despite shedding his corrupting factors, he still retains his jerkish qualities, like example him making a mess in his apartment to frame Duke into being responsible for it, also trying to get rid of him, and distrusting Rooster until he helps him save a lamb.
