Matilda Wormwood (later Matilda Honey) is the titular main protagonist of the 1988 Roald Dahl's novel of the same name.
She is the daughter of Harry and Zinnia Wormwood, and the sister of Michael Wormwood. She is a prodigious girl, but her parents never pay attention to her talents and outstanding intelligence for her age. When she went to school, she met Mrs. Honey, and both were extremely fond of each other since their first meeting. In contrast with this, Matilda has to face the monstrous principal of the School, Agatha Trunchbull, a brute woman who hate and abuses children, and makes studying at Crunchem Hall a living Hell.
In the film, she is portrayed by Mara Wilson as a 6-year-old (who also portrayed Natalie Hillard in Mrs. Doubtfire), Sara Magdalin as a 4-year-old, Amanda and Caitlin Fein as a toddler, Kayla Fredericks as a 9-month-old, and four babies (two girls: Alissa and Amanda Graham, and two boys: Trevor and James Gallagher) as a newborn.
Her Good Ranking[]
What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- She is always kind and polite to everyone that she meets, unless they are overly cruel.
- Despite everything they put her through, she treats her family very well, warmly thanking her father when he puts her in school and being happy to talk about her school day to her mom.
- She only does a prank to her family when they commit something she considers too bad to handle (selling bad cars and making them look good, forcing her to watch television, tearing off library books) and since they usually behave better for a few months after a prank, she doesn't even think of doing it again.
- She befriended her teacher, Ms. Honey, who helped her undercover the mystery of her powers.
- Matilda makes a plan to get Ms. Honey's doll, rights and house back, by defeating Trunchbull.
- In the movie, she saved her father from two police officers who wanted to arrest him, despite his treatment on her (though it was because she could be sent to an orphanage)
- She encouraged Bruce to eat the entire chocolate cake, making the other kids do it, and allowing Bruce to finish it, happily cheering when he did it.
- She defeated Trunchbull using her telekinetic powers, making her give Honey's house back to her, and ending the child tortures and abuse in Crunchem Hall.
- Made so she was adopted by Mr. Honey when her family went to Spain running from officers, though she doesn't display any strong resentment of them.
What Prevents Her From Being Pure Good?[]
- Her pranks in her family are too mischievous and mean spirited, not to mention she clearly took pleasure in them. However, not only do they arguably deserved it, but Matilda only did it when she thought they went too far across the line, and never did anything to them when they behaved nicely, decently at the least. Even if one could argue she was too young to know better it would only indicate moral agency as another prevention.
Trivia[]
- She and The Grandma from The Witches are the only Roald Dahl characters to be considered Near Pure Good.
