He is a rusty old Tow Truck and Lightning McQueen's best friend.
He is voiced by the comedian Larry the Cable Guy.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
In General/Background[]
- He is consistently extremely compassionate, friendly, and loyal throughout the Cars franchise.
- Although he used to be a huge nuisance to Lightning McQueen, especially during the first half of the World Grand Prix, he naively had no idea, and upon realizing it he promptly turned things around.
- Before the Interstate 40 was built, Mater had been doing his job of towing all the broken-down cars to Radiator Springs to get them fixed.
Cars[]
- He’s friendly towards Lightning McQueen despite him being accused of wrecking the road, even serving as his lawyer.
- He brought Sally towards McQueen, approving the fact that he has a crush on her.
- When the press takes McQueen away to the Piston Cup race, he is saddened about not being able to have a chance to say goodbye to his new friend.
- He, along with a few town residents, came to the circuit to be part of McQueen's team.
- When McQueen helps badly damaged The King cross the line to finish his race, he cheers for his heroic act.
Cars 2[]
- Despite being very incompetent and obnoxiously dimwitted for most of the second film, such as repeatedly bothering other cars during the opening ceremony in Tokyo, humiliating Lightning at the party after eating wasabi, bailing on his duties as a crew chief to see his "imaginary girlfriend" and being oblivious to what's going on around him. He later subverts his incompetence and became less dimwitted by the end of the film, after he realized how much of a nuisance he was to McQueen.
- He’s incredibly excited for the day when McQueen comes home.
- While McQueen was focusing on winning his fourth Piston Cup trophy, Mater focuses on plans he has for the summer so he can spend time with him.
- When Francesco starts to insult McQueen on television, he phones the show and tells them that Francesco should not say awful stuff about McQueen and says that he is the greatest race car in the whole world.
- He's very friendly to Francesco despite their previous altercation and tells him that Miss Sally's a fan of his.
- He politely offers McQueen a drink.
- Although he runs right into the girls' bathroom, it's completely unintentional.
- He tries to warn Grem and Acer about the weird bathroom features, given that he sincerely doesn't know any better, his intentions count.
- After he accidentally caused McQueen to lose the first race of the World Grand Prix, he decided to go back home to Radiator Springs out of guilt, to make sure he doesn’t accidentally make him lose anymore races.
- He reluctantly helps out the spies, Finn and Holley.
- He revealed that the mystery car is a lemon, which allowed the spies to deduce the fact that the lemons were behind the scheme.
- He discovers the lemon plot, and when the lemon boss orders Professor Zündapp to kill Lightning McQueen, he is horrified and breaks his holographic disguise, hence blowing his cover.
- He attempts to warn McQueen of the lemons' plot.
- When he is informed from Finn that the bomb is inside his air filters and Lightning McQueen spots him and tries to apologize to him, Mater drives backwards in order to avoid killing Lightning, even if it means being blown up himself.
- When the heroes are surrounded by lemons, intending to watch the bomb go off, Mater attempts to reason with them by stating that he understands what it is like to be the laughingstock, an outcast, ridiculed and abused, but becoming rich and powerful beyond their wildest dreams is not going to make them feel better.
- He defends McQueen against the lemons.
- He tells everyone in Buckingham Palace about the mastermind behind the hijacked race and respectfully bows to the Queen.
- He reveals that the mastermind behind the hijacking and the murders was Axlerod to everyone and saves McQueen's life as a result.
- When Holley and Finn offer to recruit Mater for another mission, he declines preferring to stay at home.
Cars 3[]
- He bids farewell to McQueen as he heads for the training center.
- He’s very glad that McQueen had a partner.
- When McQueen, who doesn't know what to do or where to go next, contacts Mater for advice, Mater tries to help and eventually offhandedly mentions "the person who taught Doc Hudson", giving Lightning the idea to see Smokey.
- When Sterling was about to stop Lightning McQueen from making Cruz race for him to stop Jackson Storm, he gets in Sterling’s way and buys them some time.
Cars on the Road[]
- During his dream in the first episode, he tries to save Lightning from being eaten by a dinosaur by pulling him to safety with his tow hook.
- He and Lightning helped Ivy the monster truck scare away the Bigfoot hunters tracking her.
- He and Lightning helped the two warring factions of road warriors make up and put aside their petty differences.
- In the finale, he made up with his sister Mato (with Cruz's help), putting aside their rivalry for good.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- He’s shown to be a little mischievous, such as “tractor tripping” with McQueen whilst calling them dumb, an act that heavily endangers their lives and results in him nearly getting caught by Frank the giant combine harvester, and playing pranks on the residents of Radiator Springs who are just minding their business.
- He is slightly jerkish, where he mocked tractors; he also lied to McQueen and Sally about being a restaurant waiter where he tried to serve them a drink he had just spat into making it heavily contaminated and lied about that too, although it's played for laughs.
- He can be reckless, since he hurts Otis out of sheer hastiness, making him spark alongside the road, and recklessly slamming him into a building, which could have seriously hurt him (and he does it again at the end of the movie showing he didn't learn anything), and he heavily endangered him and McQueen's lives just to make mischief, as mentioned prior. He also shot rocket fire at McQueen without warning him in advance, which is likewise out of sheer hastiness. Granted, the first three incidents are played entirely for laughs and the fourth one was out of fear for his own life, so this prevention is not very significant.
Trivia[]
- Since he and Lightning McQueen are Near Pure Goods, the original Cars film holds the record for being the first overall Pixar film to not have any Pure Good hero.
