Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, more simply known as Master Chief, is the main protagonist and the mascot of the Halo franchise. As well as main mascot of Microsoft Xbox.
He is a Spartan-II commando of the UNSC Naval Special Warfare Command who became one of the most important UNSC heroes during the Human-Covenant war.
With over thirty years of active duty, he has become one of the most decorated war veterans in the United Nations Space Command, earning every known UNSC medal except the Prisoner of War Medallion. His goal is to save humanity from hostile alien races.
He was voiced by Steve Downes in all of the games he appeared in. In Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, he was portrayed by Daniel Cudmore and voiced by Alex Puccinelli.
While he is stoic for most of the time, he often remains optimistic even in the worst case scenario, plus he does have a good sense of humor.
Despite the traumatic experience he had during his childhood and how he became a Spartan, he accepted his fate as a Spartan and participated in the thirty-year war against the alien threats.
He does whatever he can to protect humanity, no matter the cost.
He is honorable and shows respect towards his allies, sometimes even his enemies.
While he had killed numerous, possibly even thousands of Covenant troops, this was necessary for him as he was in the war and was protecting humanity, not to mention that some of the Covenant species are ruthless to be begin with, such as the Brutes and the Jackals.
Early Human-Covenant War[]
He and the Blue Team engaged the Covenant to rescue the surviving humans on Circinius IV.
During the Battle of Circinius IV, he saved the four only surviving cadets (including Lasky, Sulley, Chyler, and April) from a Sangheili Zealot.
He smashed through the armory to help the survivors gear up and evac.
He congratulated Thomas Lasky for his bravery.
At Ascon, he and the Blue Team rescued Doctor Halsey from the Covenant’s hand.
Halo: Combat Evolved[]
He took Cortana with him and protected her from being captured by the Covenant.
As he evacuated from the Pillar of Autumn, he protected as many marines as he could.
Upon landing on Halo, he saved several survivors who landed as well.
Rescued Captain Keyes from the Covenant airship.
While he was manipulated by 343 Guilty Spark into activating the Halo ring, he did it out of good intention as he thought the ring would destroy the Flood. But in reality, Halo is a weapon that wipes out all sentient lives in the galaxy.
After Captain Keyes had been captured by the Flood at one of the Covenant airships, he rushed to him as fast as he could.
After Keyes had been fully infected by the Flood, not only Chief put him out of his misery, but also stopped the Flood from leaving the ring, as well as gain the neural implants to initiate an overload of Pillar of Autumn’s fusion engines.
He detonated the ship’s fusion reactor in order to destroy the Halo, which not only prevented the Covenant from firing the ring, but also temporarily stopped the Flood from spreading.
Halo 2[]
Defended the UNSC Cairo Station from the Covenant fleet.
Detonated the Covenant bomb back to one of the Covenant airships to prevent it from exploding in the station.
Knowing the risk of leaving the station to throw the bomb at the airship, he suggested Cortana to stay behind.
During the battle in New Mombasa, Earth, he destroyed the Scarab that was terrorizing the city.
After finding the second Halo, he killed The Prophet of Regret before he could fire the ring.
Despite being enemies at first, he suggested The Arbiter not to piss off Gravemind considering its massive size. He also tried to reason with him that Halo is a weapon.
Upon boarding into the High Charity, he rescued several marines that were held imprisoned by the Covenant.
He gave The Prophet of Mercy, ironically, some mercy by stopping the Flood from further infecting him.
Boarded into a Forerunner ship in pursuit of the Prophet of Truth, who was heading to Earth.
He promised Cortana that he would come and return to her.
Halo 3[]
While he did threaten The Arbiter with a Magnum when he encountered him under the cloak, he did not know the latter is on their side. When Sergeant Johnson informed Chief about The Arbiter's circumstance, Chief immediately backed off.
Afterwards, he formed an alliance with The Arbiter and his fellow Elites against the Covenant.
Upon arriving on Earth, he saved Sergeant Johnson when he’s being held captive by the Brutes.
In the Crow’s Nest, he saved several marines from the Brutes.
He helps the marines evacuate from the exploded Crow’s Nest when the Covenant started invading.
Overload the infected Covenant airship’s engine core in order to prevent the Flood from spreading the entire Earth.
Deactivated the Ark just in time before it fires all the Halo rings, before Arbiter kills Truth off for good.
Upon learning that the new Halo was unconnected to the rest of the Array and it will only destroy the Flood, Chief decided to activate it with all of the Flood in the blast radius.
He return back to the infected High Charity and save Cortana, keeping his promise to her.
He overloaded High Charity's engines in order to destroy the Gravemind.
When 343 Guilty Spark attempts to kill him and Arbiter in order to prevent them in prematurely fire the newly built Halo ring, Chief destroyed the Moniter.
He attempted to bring mortally wounded Johnson back home after the latter got shot by Spark, but Johnson told him not to and dies.
Even after knowing firing the new Halo ring prematurely will destroy the Ark, he still activated since it was the only way to eliminate the Flood.
He and Arbiter race back to the frigate, Forward Unto Dawn, insert Cortana's chip to start the engine and have Arbiter take control of the frigate and reach to the portal back to Earth. Though Cortana and Chief himself did not make it, he was able help Arbiter reach to the portal safely.
Halo 4[]
He promised Cortana to return home with her to get Dr. Halsey cure her escalating Rampancy.
Attempted to warn the approaching UNSC Infinity of the dangerous artificially-induced gravity field that had caused the Forward Unto Dawn to crash.
While he did reawakened the Didact, the main antagonist of Halo 4, this was completely accidental.
When the Librarian tells Chief that he needed the medical treatment to grant immunity to the Composer, which is used to convert biological beings into data, he allows her to give him immunity needed to defeat Didact.
After learning what the Didact was planning to do to humanity, he tries to warn Captain Del Rio about the Didact's threat and capability.
When Del Rio refused to help, he attempted to stop the Didact himself.
He tells Dr. Sandra Tillson to evacuate the crew in Ivanoff Station out of the orbit.
He tried to stop the Didact from obtaining the Composer in the station, sadly he was too late and Didact's Composer killed everyone in the station and turned them into war machines.
Defeated the Didact with a pulse grenade, sending him falling into a slipspace rupture beneath the Composer.
Detonated the nuclear bomb manually, destroying the Didact’s Composer.
He felt genuine grief about losing Cortana in the end.
Hunt The Truth[]
He rescued a Sangheili ambassador from a terrorist attack and escorted him to safety.
Halo 5: Guardians[]
After confronting Cortana again, he tried to talk her out of it about wiping all organic life in the galaxy.
Realized that Cortana can no longer be reason with, thus turning against her.
Halo Infinite[]
He attempted to defend the UNSC Infinity from The Banished, but was defeated by Atriox and was threw off the cruiser.
When Echo-216 had a mental breakdown, Chief comforted him that everyone makes mistakes, even himself. He even lifted up Echo's spirit that he will not fail him. especially after he express his guilt for inability to protect Cortana back then.
He makes sure his new AI partner, Weapon, will not become like Cortana. And even though he does not trust Weapon, he still wants to.
He was horrified that Cortana destroyed the Brutes' homeworld.
He defeated the War Chief Escharum and saved Echo-216 after he was captured and tortured by the Brute.
Following this, he honors Escharum's death after their duel despite all of the atrocities Escharum committed.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
While he does so for rightful purposes, he has some lethal moments which caused some brutal damages on his opponents, in Fall of Reach, he gorily beats down ODST soldiers, granted they were asking for it due to their attempted assault on him, but was still on a near murderous edge, only stopping when higher officials ordered him not to, making this line crossed too aggressive for what a Pure Good would do in these kinds of situations and although he's been more restricted from this level of violence, his initiate to kill on however he can make it too questionable for him to be fully reformed from this.
In Halo 5: Guardians, he had gone AWOL from the UNSC out of egotistical act in pursuit of Cortana, which caused an unnecessary conflict with not just UNSC, but also Osiris team as well.
Trivia[]
Thus far, he is one of two Halo characters to be Near Pure Good, alongside Arbiter Thel 'Vadam.
