I want a family. I want to be safe. You know the worst thing I can think of, the very worst thing? Is for my children to be raised into this like I was.
~ Mary Winchester.
Get away from my boys.
~ Mary Winchester.

Mary Winchester is one of the two overarching protagonists of the TV show Supernatural.

She is a hunter, the wife of John Winchester, the mother of Sam and Dean Winchester. At first, she was only a posthumous heroine, and appeared only in flashbacks, or as a ghost, but later she resurrects, and from season 12 becomes a secondary protagonist.

She was portrayed by Samantha Smith, and Amy Gumenick and Meg Donnelly young.

Her Good Ranking[]

What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Good?[]

Background[]

  • Being a hunter, she has repeatedly saved people from various dark forces. However, she did not enjoy her job at all, because she believed that it would eventually lead to death, and therefore did not want her sons to become hunters too.
  • She loves and appreciates her family members very much, in particular her husband John and sons Dean and Sam, and is even ready to sacrifice her life to save them.
  • She reluctantly made a deal with the demon Azazel to revive her husband John. She later repented of making a deal with a demon.
  • While hunting in Canada, she killed a werewolf and saved a boy, little Ace Fox, from him, which makes a strong impression on him. Meeting Mary Winchester predetermined the future life of Asa Fox, he became a hunter and periodically wrote postcards to Mary, but could not send them, because he knew nothing about her except her name.
  • After seeing a stranger (as it later turned out, it was the demon Azazel) in Sam's bedroom, and realizing that it was not John, she quickly ran into his bedroom, hoping to save her son.
  • Being a ghost, she met with her sons, and asked them for forgiveness, after which she destroyed the poltergeist and herself.

Season 12[]

  • Being resurrected by Amara, she was safely reunited with her beloved sons, although at first it was difficult for her to adapt to the modern and unfamiliar world.
  • Together with Dean and Castiel, she went to rescue Sam from the captivity of Antonia Bevell.
  • She killed Ms. Watt, thereby saving the lives of Dean and Castiel, whom Watt almost killed.
  • Finally finding Antonia Bevell's hideout, she engaged her in a battle in which she almost defeated her, hoping to save Sam from her captivity.
  • While exploring a haunted house, she encounters the ghost of a dead boy and instinctively realizes that he is asking for help.
  • When she found out that Asa Fox had become a hunter, she felt guilty about it, but Sam told her that it was Asa's conscious choice, and he helped many people.
  • She helped the other hunters fight off the demon Jael.
  • She apologized to Jody for trying to kill her during the possession.
  • Her quarrel with Castiel is quite justified, since she considered him guilty of abandoning her sons.
  • She joined the hunt for a large pack of werewolves in Louisiana.
  • She went to a neighboring state and destroyed a group of vampires.
  • When Castiel was severely wounded, she led him away from the battlefield so that he would not be killed.
  • She reluctantly teamed up with the British Enlightened to defeat the evil spirits and thus help her sons.
  • Together with Sam, she began to hunt vampires, and together they manage to defeat the Alpha.
  • During the interrogation of the werewolf, she noticed Arthur Ketch's sadistic tendencies and tried to restrain his excessive zeal.
  • She showed strong remorse for having committed many villainous deeds while brainwashed, and sincerely apologized to her sons.
  • She helped Kelly Kline give birth to a Nephilim.

Season 13-15[]

  • In the Apocalypse World, during the attack of the angels on the hunter camp, she tried to bring out as many people as possible, including a little girl.
  • She and Jack began to lead a resistance movement against Michael and his angels in order to save the entire Apocalypse World from them.
  • Her resistance squad managed to defeat a squad of angels led by Balthazar.
  • She stopped Jack when he wanted to fight Michael, as she declares that she cannot lose "another one of her boys", showing her sincere concern for him.
  • When Kevin Tran reveals that he is a living bomb, she tried to calm him down, saying that being in Heaven will only be a memory.
  • She was very saddened by Sam's death, and ordered the entire squad to mourn him. However, he was resurrected.
  • When she met her surviving son Sam, she was very happy, but at the same time perplexed that Lucifer had resurrected him.
  • Although she punched Lucifer in the face, it was mostly justified by what he had done to them in the past.
  • She helped the survivors evacuate by bus, and go to Earth to the Main World.
  • She was shocked that Jack stayed with Lucifer, because she believed that he could have killed his girlfriend Maggie.
  • When Michael attacked the bunker, she and Bobby reluctantly agreed to escape, because they wanted to help Sam and Dean.
  • She was saddened that Dean had become Michael's vessel.
  • She trained a new squad of hunters and made sure they solved cases.
  • She tried to comfort Sam that they would find Dean.
  • She joined Sam's team to save Castiel from the demon Kipling.
  • Together with Bobby and Sam, she went in search of Dean, whose body was taken over by Michael, and Maggie.
  • She saved Bobby from the manifestation of his son Daniel, who was summoned by the enhanced genie Neal.
  • After her death, she was successfully reunited with her husband John in Heaven.

What Prevents Her From Being Pure Good?[]

  • She slightly fails the admirable standards of her sons Sam and Dean, who, with similar resources, saved more people and stopped more evil spirits.
  • Sometimes she can be lethal, both in relation to humans and supernatural beings.

Trivia[]

  • Along with Bobby Singer, she is one of the two heroes of Supernatural, who is Near Pure Good.
