This is heavy.
~ Marty's catchphrase.
Nobody calls me chicken!
~ Marty whenever someone (most commonly Biff) calls him a chicken.

Martin Seamus "Marty" McFly is the main protagonist of the Back to the Future science fiction/comedy trilogy.

A normal teenager from the 80s, Marty's life changes drastically when a friend of his, Doctor Emmet Brown, an ambitious scientist, creates a time machine out of a Delorean. After an incident causes Marty to be sent 30 years in the past, and before even getting to know the consequences of meddling with the timeline, he causes his family to started getting erased from the present by preventing his parents from getting close. He then rushes to correct this mistake, while attempting to find a way to get back to the present (future, in his point of view).

Despite succeeding the first time, he would go on two more adventures along with Doctor Brown in the Delorean, one where they went 30 years to the future to prevent Marty's son from getting in an incalculable trouble, only to have to fight a much bigger problem due to a mistake Marty made while in the future, and later to try to save the life of Doc, when he becomes aware that in 1885, the time when he is living at now, he'll be murdered by Bufford "Mad Dog" Tannen, Biff's great-grandfather.

He was famously portrayed by Michael Fox, while in the animated series he was voiced by David Kaufman, who also voiced Danny Phantom.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

Back to the Future[]

  • Despite him being considered a crazy scientist and not someone to get close to, he's a close friend to the Doctor.
  • Agreed to help Doc in his first experiments with the Delorean.
  • Tried to save Doc Brown once Libyan terrorists attacked him over having stolen radioactive material to build the time machine.
  • After finding out that his actions would eventually lead to his family being erased from existence, he tries to prevent this from happening.
  • He convinced 1955's Doctor Brown to believe in him and help him get back to the future.
  • He got Biff to chase him and Marty tricked him into slamming his car into a barrel of horse poop (which was karma for his malevolent actions).
  • While helping his father out with his mother was mostly to conserve his and his siblings' existences, he does feel bad for how he is treated and tries to help him get bravery to stand up for himself.
  • His help gives his father, George McFly, the confidence he needs to stand up to Biff and stop him from abusing Loraine.
  • He made a letter to Doc Brown warning him of his death, which, 30 years in the future, saved him as he'd use a bulletproof vest.
    • While this could cause consequences on the timeline, it was for a noble reason, and the Doctor could choose to open the letter or not, and in the end, it had no bad consequences at all.
  • Although not intentionally, he changed the timeline for the better by having his father have more confidence, which made him a successful businessman, and overall, making his whole family happier, as well as causing Biff in the present be a humble person (albeit at the cost of him being a loser)

Back to the Future: Part II[]

  • In the second movie, he goes to the future when the Doctor warns him that they should prevent something bad from happening.
  • When he discovers his son is gonna get in a lot of trouble because of Biff's son, he talks to his son to stop it.
  • After being mistaken for his son by Biff's son, Griff, he gets into a fight with him and his gang that ends up with them being arrested.
  • While he had greedy intentions on using the Grays Sports Almanac from the future, he didn't want to anything bad to happen, much less in the scope of what Bad Future Biff ended up causing.
  • Helped rescue Jennifer after she got lost in the future and ended up wandering into their house (from the future) in an attempt to prevent her from causing any problems with the timeline.
  • Stood up to his mother, suffering abuse from Biff, who is her husband (albeit forcibly) in the alternate timeline.
  • After finding out about the future created by Biff, he tries to go back to the future and put the Grays Sports Almanac back.
  • After successfully stealing the almanac from Biff Tannen and getting rescued by the Doctor via grabbing a bunting hanging out of his Delorean, and after being lowered to the ground on the bunting by the Doctor, he burns the almanac with matches, thus preventing anyone in 1955 from using that almanac for evil.
  • In the end, with the Doctor's help, he erased the Bad timeline and managed to get the almanac back to its original place and time.

Back to the Future: Part III[]

  • He tried to prevent Doc from being murdered in 1885, by the Tannen's ancestor, Biff's great Grandfather, Bufford "Mad Dog".
  • He defeated Mad Dog, and prevented him from stealing, bullying and killing anybody else anymore.
  • He matured through the series and stopped doing things just because he was pressured to or called a chicken.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • He can be a jerk at times:
    • Such as mocking his Uncle Joey's baby self because he was in a caged baby bed, and he was aware that he'd be arrested in the future, even though it is confirmed that he and his uncle were close.
    • Feeling ashamed that Marty Jr., his own son was pretty much like his father in his youth by being beaten by others and not fending for themselves.
    • No matter how played for laughs and karma it was, he showed satisfaction when Biff crashed his car onto the manure truck the in his second time in 1955.
  • Has a lot of wrathful moments and situations where he can't keep his cool, sometimes even risking very important missions or operations, such as losing his control and getting ready to fight whenever someone calls him a chicken.
  • Has reckless decisions, such as getting the Grays Sports Almanac for selfish reasons, which ends up causing the negative events of the second movie.

Trivia[]

  • Coincidentally, both he and Biff Tannen, the main antagonist of the Back to the Future trilogy, were proposed for Pure Good and Pure Evil respectively, and rejected, only to be approved both here and in the Near Pure Evil Wiki (Biff's bad future counterpart at least).
  • He and Emmett Brown are currently the only Back To The Future characters to be NPG.
