I picked the wrong regiment. As long as you guys have it in you to risk your lives and keep fighting... I will trust you.
~ Marlowe to Jean about his convictions.

Marlowe Freudenberg is a character in the anime series Attack on Titan. He is a disciplined and honorable young man whose main goal in the first season is to dismantle corruption in the military but would later try to help humanity towards survival.

He was voiced by Tomokazu Sugita in the original Japanese version and Todd Haberkorn in the English dub, the latter of whom also voiced Natsu Dragneel in Fairy Tail.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

  • In comparison to his other comrades, Marlowe joined the Military Police to make the system better, which is heavily corrupt. His comrades however only joined the Military Police to live a luxurious life in the safety of the inner walls.
  • After realizing that the Survey Corps are the most likely faction to be capable of saving humanity, he was willing to help Levi and his group out, even tough they were wanted criminals at that point.
  • When Jean pretends that he's planning on killing both Marlowe and Hitch, he falls to the ground and Marlowe tells Hitch to run while he holds off Jean.
  • While Marlowe has the knife in his hands he drops it to show Jean that he's willing to put his trust into him and help his team, risking his own life in the process.
  • Following the coup, Marlowe transfers to the Survey Corps in order to help the greater cause of humanity.
  • During the battle of Shiganshina, Marlowe becomes the leader of the recruits and tries to keep them calm.
  • He, commander Erwin and all of the recruits go on a suicide charge against the Beast Titan, drawing his attention by making themselves targets and firing signal flares. Sacrificing their lives in the process.
  • After surviving the first volley of rocks and seeing commander Erwin fall to the ground, he motivates his comrades to continue charging forward.
  • During the ceremony. Floch speaks to Hitch about Marlowe's character. Floch praises Marlowe for his encouragement in the battle, saying that he was the one that kept everyone else in line during despair, but adds that he must have regretted ever going in the end.
  • The world of Attack on Titan is very bleak and dark, where the majority of the supposedly "heroic" characters have a lot of grayness in them. Marlowe stands out from that, because of his lack of controversial actions and genuinely good intentions.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • He sometimes is quite uncaring for the feelings of others, such as ignoring Hitch's feelings for him and angrily chastising Floch for losing his horse during the battle.
