~ Mark's most famous quote, as he prepares to have Monarch gith against Ghidorah |
Mark Russell is a major character in the MonsterVerse kaiju cinematic universe, being the main human protagonist of Godzilla II: King of the Monsters, and a minor character in Godzilla vs Kong.
He is a bio-scientist, ex-husband of Emma Russell, and father of Madison and Andrew Russell. After Andrew died when Godzilla fought another giant monster, Mark turned into a distant and alcoholic father, something he'd regret deeply. He and Emma separated, though he kept in contact with Madison through emails. Despite his vengeful hate against Godzilla, he's forced to team up with Monarch, a pro-kaiju organization with great care for Godzilla, when Madison and Emma are kidnapped.
He is portrayed by Kyle Chandler.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- While he says he became an alcoholic father, we never see him as such, and it is obvious he is remorseful and over it when the film takes place.
- Always loved his family dearly, looking for his son in the middle of the destruction of San Francisco.
- Accepts to help Monarch when he discovers his ex-wife and daughter are in danger.
- He figures out Alan Jonah's plan and makes Monarch not fall for his bait of going after Mothra.
- He helps prevent the Monarch underwater base from being attacked by Godzilla, by asking to open the shields so he sees they're not a threat.
- He infiltrated Monarch's base in Artic, that was taken over by Jonah's terrorists, to save Madison and Emma.
- While he kills one of Jonah's men and without remorse, it was both justifiable, sadism free and under self-defense.
- Threatens Jonah and would've saved Emma and Madison if Emma didn't free Monster Zero.
- He gives up (albeit reluctantly) his chance to save Emma and Madison to save multiple Monarch soldiers, showing he still has a good heart.
- Angrily, but justifiably, scolds Emma for freeing Ghidorah and aiding in Jonah's plan, and especially by putting Madison, a child, in the middle of all of that.
- He asks for the city to be evacuated before Rodan is woken up.
- Manually corrects one of Monarch's ship, Argo, hangar to allow a group of soldiers, with a lot of rescued civilians, go inside in safety.
- After Godzilla apparently dies, he decides to go look for Madison himself.
- After Serizawa's speech to him, he eventually learns to let go of his hatred against Godzilla and acknowledges him as necessary for the future of mankind.
- He also becomes nicer overall after Serizawa's death, with the intensity of his jerk moments being severely downplayed, and its recurrence also getting lower.
- He also respects and is saddened by Serizawa's death and decides to honor his sacrifice.
- Makes sure this time, Monarch helps Godzilla fight Ghidorah directly, attacking him with their weapons.
- He figures out Emma used the acustic of humans to create the ORCA, allowing him to track it down.
- He looks for and finds Madison, as well as the ORCA, in the middle of Boston's destruction, saving her and getting ORCA back online.
- He asks Emma not to run into Ghidorah with the ORCA, showing that despite everything she did, he didn't want her to die.
- He becomes the director of Monarch in Godzilla vs Kong.
- Despite having experiences with hating Godzilla, and the whole world being disillusioned on him when he starts attacking Apex, he refuses to believe Godzilla's gone evil, though he accepts this as a possibly, as he says, "Godzilla is hurting people, and we don't know why".
- He tries to find a motive for Godzilla's attacks and make them stop.
- He makes Madison stay out of the mission, out of care for her and wanting her to stay safe.
- Tries to contact Madison multiple times in the film, showing he still cares for and loves her a lot.
- Happily hugs Madison when he finds her in Hong Kong.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- Despite shedding this trait, a bit, he is still a jerk, calling Bernie's podcast "trash", despite him being right, dismissing Madison's attempts to help (though this was out of care, as he didn't want her to die like her mother) and telling Josh to shut up at the end of the film.
- He fails the standards to Ishiro Serizawa and Ford Brody, both Pure Good heroes. The latter risking his life and the former giving his life altogether to ensure Godzilla would be able to defeat his enemies. He does not fail to Mothra or Madison however, as both had more resources (being a powerful kaiju and access to the ORCA).
Trivia[]
- Should he return in later installments, his ranking could change, for better or worse, depending on if he gains or loses corrupting qualities or if he can still compete in the franchise's standards.
