“ | But look at how much fun we've had! Look at how much you've both grown, look at Sprig. I gave you this, I gave you everything!... I just didn't wanna be alone. | „ |
~ Marcy tries to justify her actions to Anne. |
“ | Marcy: This... this isn't real, is it? The real Anne and Sasha don't want what I want, and it hurts. But forcing them to follow my dreams is wrong! I've learned that the hard way. King Aldrich: This is getting tiresome, Marcy. We gave you your silly games and your idiotic little friends. It's time for you to be assimilated into the Core. Now! Marcy: NO! Only a coward would hide away in this place! Well, I reject this sick fantasy and I reject YOU! King Aldrich/The Core: Rrraaagghh! FOOL! The only thing waiting for you out there is rejection and misery! Even if your friends win, your parents will still tear the three of you apart. Marcy: I've started this whole mess because I wanted to escape that reality. But I won't run away from it anymore! |

~ Marcy remorsefully accepts the reality of being separated from Anne and Sasha. |
“ | Anne, Sasha, I'm sorry. I was so scared of moving away. The thought of losing you was just so big! I-I was afraid that if we weren't together, we wouldn't be friends anymore. | „ |

Marcy Wu is the tritagonist of the Disney Channel animated series Amphibia and the titular main protagonist of the tie-in book Marcy's Journal: A Guide to Amphibia.
She is 13-year-old Taiwanese-American girl who, along with her best friends Anne Boonchuy and Sasha Waybright, was transported to Amphibia. Unlike the other two, however, Marcy fully planned to be transported there out of fear of losing her friendship with them. After realising how selfish her actions were, she tries her best to amend for them. She is also a ranger for the capital city of Newtopia, represents the Green Gem of Wit on the Calamity Box, and was temporarily possessed by the Core.
She was voiced by Haley Tju.
Her Good Ranking[]
What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- Although she kick-started the whole series’ events by sending herself, Anne and Sasha to Amphibia against their wishes, her motivation was fear of no longer being friends with them, meaning that she deeply values their friendship. Later on, Marcy realized the selfish nature of this and felt extreme remorse over it, to the point it still haunts her later on. Also, Anne and Sasha admitted that they were bad friends to her too, acting apathetic to her interests. So overall, the motivation makes the audience to feel sorry for her. Also, while she was still inside the Core's mind, she realized that forcing her friends to follow her interests is wrong and admitted she learned it the hard way. After she stands up to King Aldrich and released herself from the Core's influence, she later reconciled with them and eventually accepted the fact she's being separated from them.
- While she did had moments of acting selfish and mischievous, this was subverted in the Season 3 finale.
- Marcy has shown some admirable acts of kindness and empathy towards others several times in both the series and her defictionalization.
- Unlike the other main characters, Marcy shows no hatred for anyone and doesn't like to hold grudges, as she knows it will only lead to more pain and conflict.
Background[]
- After arriving in Newtopia, she dedicated herself to protect its flora and fauna.
- During her first meeting with King Andrias, Marcy gave him a friendly gift in the form of a robot pin. Her affable nature resulted in Andrias seeing her as a friend (one of his redeeming qualities).
Season 2[]
- She saved Anne and the Plantars from a group of Barbari-Ants.
- Unlike Sasha, Marcy quickly took a liking to the Plantars, and becomes friendly with them, despite Sprig's skepticism of her.
- Along with Anne and the Plantars, she stopped an invasion of Barbari-Ants near Newtopia, during which she convinced Anne that she had grown up and no longer needs protection.
- She also risked her life to save Sprig from the Barbari-Ants Queen's stomach, and forgave him for his earlier suspicions of her.
- Though she was not happy to hear about Anne and Sasha's fight, both she and Anne wanted to make things right with her.
- She admitted that she is jealous of Anne's social skills with others, right after Sprig accidentally blurted out that Marcy smarts make Anne feel dumb, which gave the latter some much needed self-love.
- She stayed with Andrias to do some research on the Calamity Box, while Anne and the Plantars explore Newtopia.
- After seeing how Anne misses the Plantars, Marcy allowed her to leave Newtopia.
- While she was a guide at the temples for them, Marcy herself passed all trials of the first temple, while also becoming more humble in process, by making her lose giant Flip-wart match, saving Hop Pop in process. She even apologized to Anne and the Plantars for endangering them with her obsession.
- In order to make the Wartwood citizens like her, she fixed the statue of town's founder after she accidentally broke it. The next morning, she improved the town's appearance to impress the citizens. When Wartwood began to sink down, she and Anne rescued the citizens from disaster and later began to rebuild the town to fix her mistakes.
- She helped Maddie turn her triplet sisters back to normal by decreasing their sizes, and also to reconcile with them.
- She and Sprig helped Anne to dress up of what to wear to prepare for the third temple.
- She tried to stop Anne and Sasha from fighting because of the latter's temper.
- Despite Sasha's betrayal, she still cared for her and was concerned for her and Anne's friendship when it became fallen apart.
- With the rest of her allies, she tried to stop the Toad Army’s invasion of Newtopia.
- She felt remorseful for trusting King Andrias over her friends and family.
- She stood up to King Andrias after seeing his true colors.
- During Anne’s battle against King Andrias, Marcy saved Sprig from falling to his death after Andrias dropped him out of a window to teach Anne a "lesson" about friendship.
- She used the Calamity Box to sent Anne and the Plantars to Earth, helping them escape from King Andrias, while personally suffering a severe injury from Andrias, but not before she apologized to Anne for everything.
Season 3[]
- While being possessed by the Core, Marcy ultimately overcame her fear of losing her friends and stood up to King Aldrich, who tried to keep her in the Core forever. She later tearfully apologized for this to Anne and Sasha, telling them that the fear of losing them got the best of her.
- After returning to Amphibia, Marcy, Anne and Sasha empowered themselves with the Calamity Gems in an attempt to stop the Core from spitefully destroying all life in Amphibia via colliding its mechanized red moon with the surface, while also taking the risk of being stuck in Amphibia forever. Although she and Sasha protested against Anne’s plan to let her absorb all three stones, knowing that this will kill her too, they tearfully allowed Anne to do this as the last option left.
- During her final farewell to the Amphibians, Marcy apologized to Lady Olivia and General Yunan for originally arriving in Amphibia for selfish purposes and for putting everyone in danger because of her dishonesty and naivety.
- She was the only one who bidded farewell to Andrias, showing that she still cares for him (or at the very least, is neutral) and doesn't hold a grudge against him for his deceiving and horrible actions. Unlike everyone else, including Anne, who hate Andrias for everything he did and will never forgive him for his actions, Marcy is the only one who understands Andrias and the reason why he did all of those horrible things, as he was obsessed with gaining his father's love and approval. In the epilogue, Marcy has a blue newt pin that resembled him on her purse to remember him, as she doesn't want hatred to consume her heart like his did 1000 years ago.
Marcy's Journal: A Guide to Amphibia[]
- She spent several days helping repair an ancient bridge on the verge of collapse with the help of several Newtopia citizens.
- She joined the Newtopian Night Guard in hopes of finding Anne and Sasha.
- She understood and didn't blame her cadets: Javi, Femur, and Kettle for being distrustful of her, knowing she was a strange creature from another world, and that their former Captain Ernst went missing during a mission. But they warm up to her after she managed to rally her team together to defeat a giant cobra.
- She and her team tried to stop an ancient order called "The Order of the Olm" from burning down libraries all over the city.
- She gave a small thief called Hamby her Tamagochi, after realizing he's lonely.
- She tried to cheer up her teammates once "Goldmask" was revealed to be Captain Ernst.
- She disobeyed Headmaster Albert's orders to fully defeat the cult.
- She sympathized with Yunan after finding out her family's reputation was tarnished after her father abandoned his comrades in a battle, believing no one should be defined by their past mistakes.
- She saved a theater troupe from being eaten by mantis rays once Yunan threw them overboard.
- After realizing Bomma Fritz isn't truly bad and was unaware of the cult's book burning, she showed no animosity towards her and offered her to join the Night Guard.
- While she originally tried to find good in Captain Ernst, she ultimately realized he's beyond redemption and let him fall to his death after he injured her teammates. She also spent several days helping them recover afterwards.
- While she originally wanted to reveal to Anne and Sasha that she got them stranded in Amphibia as soon as they all got back together, she ultimately didn't want to ruin their friendship after realizing what Ernst has done, so she decided to wait until the right moment.
- While Marcy remains unaware of what Andrias is really up to, there are moments like these that shows her friendship with him wasn't entirely one-sided, or a ploy to gain her trust. Despite Andrias using her dark secret against her later, he really did understand her pain of being separated from her friends, and both have often sensed each other's deep sadness, pain and regret like no one else ever has.
- Marcy had expressed often times how happy she is to see how much Anne grew from the shy pushover to a more confident hero she became during her time in Amphibia, and despite knowing how brutish and aggressive Sasha could be, she never spoke ill of her, showing just how much she loves and appreciates her friends for who they are and loves just about everything about them.
- Once her attempts at learning more about Frobo fail and result in him being put out of commission for a moment, she apologized and fixed him.
- She was the one who suggested to have dinner with Sasha and Grime after reuniting with them to try and bury the hatchet.
- After being freed from the Core, stopping it from destroying Amphibia, Anne sacrificing her life and then getting resurrected by the Guardian, Marcy calls Anne a true hero, and like everyone else, is super grateful for what she's done.
- Despite everything he did to her, Marcy still said goodbye to Andrias before leaving Amphibia.
- She apologized to her parents for running away from them and accepted that they were moving.
- She partially helped Mr. X and Terri figure out how the Calamity Box works, which caused them to start working on creating another portal to Amphibia.
What Prevents Her From Being Pure Good?[]
- Even though she ultimately made up for starting the whole series and subverted all her corrupting qualities, Marcy still fails the admirable standards of the show to some of other heroes, who in their screentime, have done more admirable acts. This directly amplifies to:
- Anne Boonchuy - who stood up for all of Wartwood against the toads, stopped a multiverse invasion by defeating King Andrias, forgave her friends, changed herself for the better and sacrificed herself (though she was later revived) to stop the Core for good. While she does arguably have more resources during her most admirable act, she shares her second admirable act with Sasha and Marcy with basically the same resources and did all those additional admirable acts.
- Sasha Waybright - who even as an antagonist, did very heroic and selfless acts, like shaping Grime into a better person, saving all of Toad Tower and even risking her life to make up with Anne, before forming the Resistance.
- Leif/Lily Plantar - who stopped multiversal invasions for 1,000 years, all while having lesser resources, while also posthumously helping Andrias stand up to the Core and Aldrich. She also stands out for her lack of screentime since her actions left a big impact on the story, much moreso than Marcy's (while both of them expressed remorse over the downside to their respective actions).
