I guess you just don't know people as well as you think you do. You miscalculated; I love Zuko more than I fear you.
~ Mai explaining to Azula why she saved Zuko during the Escape from the Boiling Rock.

Mai is a minor character in the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. She is the daughter of a high-ranking official of the Fire Nation and a long-time friend of Princess Azula and Ty Lee.

She was voiced by Cricket Leigh.

Her Good Ranking[]

What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Good?[]

Animated series[]

  • Although she did help Azula in capturing the Avatar, she did it mostly out of friendship with her, not out of hatred for him.
  • Although her way of dealing with rivals may seem lethal (throwing knives), she mostly avoids killing, preferring only to neutralize her opponents.
  • She always sincerely loved Zuko, and never wished him harm, even when Azula was at odds with him.
  • Although outwardly she is very cold, serious and depressive, this does not detract from her inner kindness.
  • Unlike most other people from the Fire Nation, she does not show any xenophobia towards other Nations; while she initially didn’t understand Zuko betraying the Fire Nation for its own good, she ultimately came to see his view by the time she took up a teaching role at her old school, having also realized the Fire Nation’s mistake in coveting power over the world.
  • She saved Zuko and his new friends, who were almost killed by cutting the cables of the cable car they were on. This allowed Zuko and his new friends to escape.
  • She bluntly told Azula that she loved Zuko more than she was afraid of her, and was even ready to fight her, but she was saved by Ty Lee, who stunned Azula first.
  • After her release, she began dating Zuko again, showing that she still loves him.

Sequel comics[]

  • She harshly rejected her father's offer to join his society in order to free Ozai, and even dealt with all members of his society.
  • Although, according to Ty Lee, she only used Kei Lo, it was justified because he had lied to her during their first meetings.
  • Although she broke up with Zuko, it was justified because he hid a lot of things from her, and despite this, she still did not stop caring about him.
  • She and Ty Lee informed Suki of the Ozai Society's plan to kill Zuko.
  • Together with other heroes, she defeated the rebels, thereby saving Zuko and his family from them.
  • Despite betraying her father Ukano, she still cared about him, and did not arrest him, allowing him to escape.
  • She asked Aang to save her brother Tom-Tom from the dark spirits.
  • She demanded from Zuko that he release Kei Lo, as he was captured by accident.
  • She really cared about Kei Lo, and even prayed that Azula would spare him.
  • She and Kay Lo defeated two of Azula's assistants and rescued the children they had abducted. She was also very happy to see her younger brother again, as well as the fact that her father helped the children escape.
  • Despite the fact that her father was eventually arrested (he voluntarily surrendered), she was proud of him anyway, and even said she would always remember his bravery.
  • She became the new teacher at the fire Academy, and began to teach the students a new method that did not inspire fear in them, and also saved another teacher from Dai Li's agents.

What Prevents Her From Being Pure Good?[]

  • She slightly fails the admirable standard compared to Sokka and Suki, who performed more heroic deeds with similar resources.
  • She and Azula, Ty Lee, and Zuko trashed Chan's house for kicking them out. Although she later softened a lot in this regard, she still showed no remorse about it. However, she wasn't doing anything overtly dangerous or villainous, so this is minor prevention.
  • Sometimes she can be lethal, because sometimes she threatened to kill her opponents.
  • Sometimes she can be rude and arrogant towards others.
