Lisa is a minor yet pivotal protagonist of the 2017-2021 Netflix animated series Castlevania, which is based on the video game franchise of the same name.
She is the wife of Dracula, mother of Alucard, and a doctor by profession. Due to her medical work and displacing a local wise woman as the main doctor in Targovisteas, the wise woman reports her to the Bishop under false allegation of witchcraft. After inspecting her clinic, he agrees with the accusation and executes her.
Her death is what motivates Dracula to kill humanity out of vengeance and grief, creating the premise of the story's plot. Following Dracula's death, he searches for and finds her in Hell, where they find peace together being reunited. She is later resurrected by Saint Germain as part of Death's plot to revive her as a Rebis inhabiting hers and Dracula's soul.
The Rebis is killed by Trevor Belmont, and she is revived in her original body alongside Dracula, where they agree to start a new life and to eventually reunite Alucard after giving him time for closure after all the events that occurred in the TV series.
In the English version, she is voiced by Emily Shallow, and by Azuma Tanaka in the Japanese dub.
Her Good Ranking[]
What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- Spending much of her life as a doctor with the intention to help others.
- She risked her life to seek out further medical knowledge from Dracula for humanity's wider benefit. This was despite the risk of death from Dracula, who had a reputation for brutally killing people and wanting to be left alone, and from false suspicions of witchcraft, which may have increased after affliating herself with Dracula and using medical knowledge beyond that known to the rest of humanity at the time. This becomes a reality, being executed by the Bishop under this accusation.
- With her improved medical knowledge, she becomes the main doctor in Targoviste. She likely improved both the morbidity and mortality of many people in the community (and potentially outside the community). This is shown with one of her patients, Mrs. Djuvara, who she gives effective treatment and shows genuine care.
- She displaces the local "wise" woman as the main doctor, who gave out dubious treatments including dried foot skin. Such treatments may actually be to the determinant of people's health, taking the place of actually effective treatment or, in the case of dried foot skin, potentially spreading infection and causing active harm.
- She (at least whilst alive) succeeds in motivating Dracula to become a better person, something that no other human has been known to do. This may have motivated him to save Hector and Isaac's lives during his travels. When resurrected, she helps Dracula recover from his rage and mental trauma whilst encouraging him to live a peaceful life.
- She was a loving wife and mother to Dracula and Alucard, and very likely influenced Alucard to be the hero he became.
- Attempted to dissaude the Bishop to execute her, both out of fear that Dracula would unleash his vengeance against humanity (he did) and out of concern for his own well-being.
- Whilst burning at the stake, she tries to reach out to Dracula to dissuade him from taking revenge against humanity. Though he did not hear this, Alucard did hear this, which influenced his actions and at least partially motivate him to attempt to convince Dracula to not attack humanity and to only kill the Bishop as the one responsible for her death (who deserved to die). Her influence also motivated Dracula to spare Mrs. Djuvara from his rage, as he warned her to leave the city out of his devotion to Lisa.
- She shown concern for others, feeling regret for stealing people's clothes in the finale and wishes to make it up to those people the next day (which Dracula says they will), an action which was likely done out of necessity as they then had no belongings.
- Decides to not return to her castle with Dracula after being resurrected for some time out of benevolent concern for Alucard to give him time for closure.
- She is portrayed as a "greater than good" character, being killed in a Christ-like manner during the show.
What Prevents Her From Being Pure Good?[]
- Though the extent of her benevolence to others as part of her medical profession goes beyond Standard Good, much of this is off-screen. Only one of her patients is shown onscreen, Mrs. Djuvara.
- After being revived, she and Dracula stole people's clothes and pickpocketed. This was likely out of necessity given that they had no belongings at the time, and she expressed regret for stealing the clothes, wishing to compensate their original owners.
- However, she doesn't express regret for the headman who they pickpocketed, telling Dracula that he was a "pig." Whilst he is not shown on-screen, as a headman, he is likely financially well off and should still be so after being pickpocketed, reducing the impact of this preventative factor.
Trivia[]
- She and Sypha are the only Castlevania heroes to be Near Pure Good.
