Near Pure Good Hero Wiki

It was thousands of years ago. I was only meant to visit (earth) for a short time, but I got caught in a middle of a war. It was awful! I tried to run but--I was picked up by a Homeworld soldier and confused for a Crystal Gem and used as a tool. They asked me: "Show us your base!", "Where is your leader?" I didn't know. I couldn't say I'm not one of them. It soon became clear that there was no hope in stopping the rebellion. All of the Homeworld Gems fled, and all the panic of escaping Earth, I was left behind. And there I stayed. Freedom in my sight but out of reach for ages, until I was found.

That wasn't strength, that was weakness! Restraint takes strength. PATIENCE takes strength! ... Ugh. I don't have the strength to deal with you.

Lapis Lazuli is a major character in Cartoon Network's Steven Universe franchise.

She is a tragic Lapis gem that was caught in the crossfire during the rebellion on Earth and poofed by Bismuth when she attempted to flee the conflict. Mistaken for a Crystal Gem, Lapis was interrogated by hordes of Homeworld soldiers who asked her several questions she was unable to answer or deny. When the Homeworld soldiers eventually all withdrew from Earth, Lapis was ultimately abandoned and her gemstone ended up being trampled by a fleeing soldier. Hopelessly imprisoned in the confines of her mirror, Lapis could only observe the skies of the Galaxy Warp through her fissured gemstone until she was eventually discovered and seized by Pearl. After finally being freed by Steven, Lapis seizes all of Earth's water in a futile attempt to elevate herself high enough to reach Homeworld but later abandons this goal after Steven restores her fractured gem with his saliva's healing properties. Upon coming into several internal conflicts with herself due to her troubled nature and traumatic backstory, Lapis starts opening up to other people with Steven's help and reluctantly becomes an official Crystal Gem and helps them rebel against the Diamonds and defend Earth.

She is voiced by Jennifer Paz.

Her Good Ranking[]

What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Good?[]

In General[]

  • Despite the high admirable standards, Lapis easily manages to stand out for the following reasons:
    • Her message about Jasper's upcoming invasion is the only reason the gems were prepared to take action and why the city had been evacuated ahead of time, thus her warning indirectly saved possibly hundreds of lives from the battle that would soon take place.
    • She trapped Jasper while they were both fused as Malachite under the bottom of the ocean for several months (possibly even a whole year) in order to keep the planet safe and stop Jasper from harming anyone else. Her measure of forcibly staying fused with Japser simultaneously prevented her from directly contacting the Diamonds of her status (something that Peridot is shown unable to do mostly due to Jasper's absence) and kept the whole planet safe from further invasions for a long while. Not to mention her absolute lack of resources when compared to Pearl & Steven who have the other Crystal Gems, ability to fuse, and Rose's arsenal of weapons. Peridot, who had more than enough technology to be able to construct a drill all the way down to the Earth's core and prevent the Cluster from emerging, and Rose who had an entire gem army to command and that's without mentioning her Diamond abilities.
  • While she initially debuted as an antagonist, her most villainous acts like stealing all of Earth's water and coming into conflict with the Crystal Gems were done since she believed it was the only way she could possibly return to Homeworld especially given the fact she was unable to use her wings while her gem was fractured. Had her plan actually worked, it's very plausible Lapis would've returned the water back to normal afterwards.
    • Additionally, she has shown great remorse for the actions she committed in the past like breaking Greg's leg, almost drowning Connie and stealing all of Earth's water and has clearly reformed past these traits given how selfless and protective she becomes of her friends later in the series.

Season 1[]

  • She saved Steven from being accidentally ran over by Mayor Dewey's van by using Lars' voice to warn him of the approaching vehicle through the magical mirror.
  • Despite being trapped inside the mirror, she eventually adapted to it and even started verbally communicating with Steven by encrypting messages using words and sounds she heard from other people. She then quickly befriended Steven and had a lot fun with him since he was the first person who actually treated her as a sentient being instead of a simple tool.
  • After having her cracked gemstone healed by Steven, she thanks him for doing so and returns Earth's ocean back to normal and leaves peacefully.
  • After arriving on Homeworld and being taken prisoner before being forcefully sent back to Earth alongside Jasper and Peridot, she realizes how horribly corrupt Gemkind has become and defects. She sends a warning message to Steven through the wailing stone to tell him and the other Crystal Gems that Homeworld is coming to invade Earth.
    • Her message allowed the Gems to be able to prepare in advance and have a small defense force ready while also evacuating the entirety of Beach City's residents and prevented them from getting involved, likely saving countless lives.
    • She willingly gave false information to Jasper when the latter had questioned her and omitted some facts about the Crystal Gems for Steven's safety.
    • Upon arriving, she tries to convince Jasper and Peridot to stand down and prevent a confrontation.
  • When Steven tried to free her from her cell, she convinced him not to since doing so could open the possibility of him and Ruby being captured again which would cause more harm than good.
  • She agrees to fuse with Jasper to form Malachite by deluding her into thinking that she'll help her battle against the gems, only to immediately betray her and sacrifice herself by dragging them both to the very bottom of the ocean, preventing her from harming anyone else and contacting the Diamonds, which would keep Earth safe from another invasion for a considerable amount of time.

Seasons 2 and 3[]

  • When Steven contacts her through his dreams, she tries to convince him to not look for her and just keep himself safe instead as she has fully devoted herself into keeping Malachite trapped in the abyss of the ocean down so that Jasper can't regain control and resurface to hurt him or the other gems again.
  • She managed to maintain superior control over Malachite through sheer willpower and kept Malachite at bay for an even more prolonged time period with the aid of the Watermelon Stevens from Mask Island.
  • When Jasper finally starts regaining control over Malachite, she still tries to fight back against her but is completely subdued and subjugated to Jasper's influence likely due to having constantly held her at bay for several months on end.
  • Upon awakening from her coma, she attempts to leave and return to Homeworld again telling Steven that her main reason for doing so is because her presence alone endangers him and she intends to avoid putting him through anymore trouble especially after all he's done for her.
  • She agrees to stay on Earth as a chance for a new life, wanting to know how different it was from the thousands of years she spent trapped and began developing genuine attachments to the planet to the point of wanting to protect it from Homeworld.
  • Though she was initially rude and dismissive of Peridot's presence and harshly denied her attempts at making amends with her, this was understandable considering Peridot forcibly sent her back to Earth alongside Jasper and even imprisoned the former on her ship.
    • Furthermore, she eventually grows to care greatly for Peridot and managed to put their past behind them and start on a new chapter and even began living together in Steven's barn.
  • When Peridot is chased down by the Roaming Eye, she shields Peridot and protects her by conjuring an enlarged water arm used from the newly built pool and uses it to effortlessly crash the ship into the ground. This moment shows that Lapis subverted any potential resentment or hostility she held towards Period and even asks the latter if she's okay, kickstarting their gradual relationship.
  • She participates in Steven's idea to pretend to be a regular human alongside the other gems and play baseball against the Rubies to protect Peridot so they can trick the Homeworld soldiers into leaving Earth.
  • When Steven and Greg take her out on a trip to the sea, she genuinely tries to enjoy herself and help them with fishing despite being very uncomfortable with being surrounded such a large body of water since she was still mentally recovering from being trapped underneath it for so long.
  • When Jasper attacks the boat and throws Steven aside, she tries to help him before Jasper pleads her to fuse again. Lapis understandably rejects this offer; however, it wasn't even due to her resenting Jasper or anything of the sort and was in fact the opposite as she reminded the latter just how unhealthy their relationship was and that Malachite embodied that unhealthiness in every possible aspect. Not wanting to put herself or Jasper through such a terrible experience again and when the latter deludes herself into thinking Steven manipulated her, she uses her power to conjure a water fist that ejected Jasper off the ship.
    • During this interaction Lapis expressed genuine remorse for some of the horrible things she did and began to realize she wasn't any better than Jasper which is why she was torn between seeing her again and avoiding her. It was also this scene that shows Lapis is aware that she went overboard while fused with Jasper and a key element in her not wanting to re-fuse as Malachite, knowing how catastrophic things would be if she actually accepted the offer.
  • After accidentally creating a leakage in the boat that gradually caused it to sink, she carries Steven and Greg safely back to the docks.
  • She grew to get along with Peridot and abandoned her previous grudge against the latter, helping her renovate the barn and create art that they personally liked to call "meep-morps".
  • When the Rubies returned after discovering Jasper wasn't at the moon, she subdued them all by herself and held them captive before contacting the Crystal Gems for aid in handling the situation.

Season 4[]

  • In order to appease to Andy, she helps throw a dinner and learns more about human culture and festivities to make him more comfortable.
  • She helps Steven catch up to Andy's plane by flying him there so they can talk things over and resolve their family conflict.
  • When the Gems left to go retrieve Greg from the Human Zoo, she and Peridot temporarily moved to Beach City to act as Earth's substitute protectors in the Crystal Gems' stead, even recruiting both Connie & Pumpkin to form a four-party just like the original Crystal Gem team.
  • While in Beach City, she helped several citizens with their daily tasks, particularly using her keen hydrokinetic ability to run Greg's car wash by engulfing the vehicles completely in water after Peridot would suspend them mid-air for her and leave the cars squeaky clean when she was finished.
  • Although she acted insubordinate and attempted to usurp Peridot's role as "Garnet" of the team and let the self-asserted authority get to her head, leading to her accidentally wrecking the sign for Greg's business while refusing to listen to Connie when she tried de-escalating the situation and ended up getting into an argument with them both the following day. After being convinced by Connie that they shouldn't merely imitate the Crystal Gems and instead just be themselves by handling things in their own unique way, she is genuinely impressed by Connie's inspirational speech and decides to help fix the mess she initially caused.
  • After fixing the car wash, it was revealed that she, Connie & Peridot all made Greg a brand-new sign for him after rebuilding the business as a surprise that he ended up liking even more than the old one.
  • While she wasn't accepting of Navy Ruby's apparent desire to genuinely change and stay on Earth, this reaction was understandable given that she's seen firsthand how ruthless and cruel Homeworld soldiers are. Not to mention, the Rubies had attacked them several times at this point, so Lapis' ambivalence was mostly justified. In the end though, she still agrees to try to give her a chance and help her adjust to Earth.
  • Despite her obvious distrust for her, she still tried to give Navy a chance and helped her by teaching her about life on Earth. She also apologized for making Navy feel like she didn't belong with them and later accompanied her and the others on a flight on the Roaming Eye when Navy claimed to miss the ship.
  • After Navy tricks Steven by having him push a button that ejects all passengers, she reveals that her true intentions were to retrieve her ship all along. Lapis tries to apprehend her and take the Roaming Eye back but is thrown off the ship into the ocean. However, Lapis wasn't angry at all despite the deception and was simply glad that her suspicions regarding Navy were accurate after all.

Season 5[]

  • Upon discovering that Steven was put on trial before the Diamonds at Homeworld and knowing the risk of a possible invasion was approaching, she tries to leave Earth and take both Peridot and Pumpkin as well as the entire barn with them so that they can flee the planet and be safe from Homeworld's forces, also trying to convince Steven to go with them. She also stayed behind for a whole extra day to locate Pumpkin that she could've spent on finishing her leave but was unwilling to leave her behind.
  • Even though she reluctantly left Earth, halfway through the galaxy she decided to go back and settled on the moon instead, afraid of what the other Gems might think of her runaway attempt and shows deep remorse for leaving and destroying her home in fear of what the Diamonds would do to it.
  • She used the Observation Orb on the Moon Base to continuously check on her friends on Earth and make sure they're doing okay, showing that even though she left, she still cares about their well-being.
  • She expresses her doubts and insecurities to Steven when he finds her, even confessing to him that she wasn't as satisfied with leaving than she thought. She even expresses how she would rather be in the face of danger with her comrades than being safe but in solitude and considers going back with Steven before he has a dream about the diamonds which causes her to leave once again.
  • She eventually overcame her fear of Homeworld's forces completely and decided to return to help in the inevitable fight.
  • She returns during Blue and Yellow Diamond's attack during Garnet's wedding, dropping the entire barn on top of Blue Diamond to incapacitate her briefly. She then shares a warm reunion with her friends before officially declaring that she's joining the Crystal Gems to protect Earth.
  • Due to being the least affected by Blue Diamond's pathokinesis, she manages to gather enough energy to hold her down with her water-forged chains, allowing the others to recover and actually take down Blue Diamond.
  • Even after Yellow Diamond joins the battle to aid Blue, it is shown that she continues resisting the two Diamonds until she is ultimately defeated and poofed as shown in Steven's subconscious.
  • After recovering her physical form, she, Peridot, and Bismuth repaired Blue and Yellow Diamond's ships and flew them to Homeworld after receiving Steven's message so that they could help in the final fight against White Diamond.
  • She uses Blue's ship to land a hit on White's mech, strong enough to hold her back and give the Gems time to regroup while also allowing Blue and Yellow to stand up to White.
  • After White takes control of the other two Diamonds and takes back their respective ships, she saves Bismuth from falling.
  • After the four main Crystal Gems fuse together to form Obsidian, she helps to distract the Diamond Mech and draw its attention towards her while Obsidian makes her way to the head so that they can reach White Diamond.
  • After recovering from being knocked unconscious, she goes to help fight White alongside Bismuth and Peridot.
  • She helped gather all the corrupted gems from the Burning Room and heal them on Rose's fountain with the Diamonds' healing powers, including Jasper despite all the pain she had put her through.

Movie[]

  • She helped in the construction of Little Homeworld on Earth, to help give Gems a new home where they could learn about Earth and learn to be their own person.
  • When Steven comes to her for help regarding the Gems having become amnesiac after being cut and poofed by Spinel's rejuvenator, she suggests using his healing powers and later tries to cheer him up with Bismuth and Peridot by singing "Who We Are", which brought back Steven's will to help people and took part in him having the crystal gems recover their memories one by one.
  • She later helps brainstorm ideas to get Garnet to form again and saves the Heaven and Earth Beetles from being run over by a giant runaway saw.
  • She tried to use her powers to get rid of the injector before it could cause more damage.
  • She later helped evacuate Beach City and rescue people stuck in the chaos caused by Spinel. She also later helped in the rebuilding of the city.

Future[]

  • She helped in Little Homeschool by teaching other gems how to be themselves and be self-accepting, helping Steven in his attempts to promote the place to new arrivals.
  • After hearing rumors that there are gems that are still out terraforming planets despite no longer be ordered by the Diamonds, she goes to investigate the area with Steven.
  • She tries to persuade the two disruptive Lapis Lazulis to stop their terraforming ways and find new, less destructive hobbies, presenting all her personal activities to them and even singing about her new peace on Earth despite clearly being uncomfortable about having to express herself so openly.
  • After trying to solve things peacefully fails, she decides to use force to stop the Lapises from continuing to terraform the planet. She then engages in a fight with them and uses her hydrokinetic like water hands and chains. Though it backfired fighting them this way since it merely inspires the Lapis duo to imitate her techniques and re-apply them with more lethality and become deadlier adversaries.
  • After being pinned down and chained by them, Lapis reaches the limits of her tolerance and immediately overpowers the two Lapis Lazulis by summoning water to flood the landscape and then uses the surrounding water to create a giant hydro-projection of herself.
  • She ultimately chooses to spare the Lapis Lazulis instead of finishing them off after seeing Steven's worried expression. She then convinced them to stop terraforming and even lectured them when they said they would begin listening to her because of how powerful she is, instead letting them know that her losing her cool was actually weakness. Her actions however, actually inspired one of them to join Little Homeschool.
  • Upon spotting the corrupted Steven wreaking havoc in the Crystal Temple, she warps there to help and is horrified to learn of Steven's corruption.
  • She manages to subdue Steven and trap him in a body of water long enough for everyone to try to come up with solutions to try and save him, with even the Diamonds arriving to try to help.
  • After being motivated by Connie, she manages to hold Steven down while everyone embraces him and reaches out to him, apologizing for not noticing his emotional distress and insecurities before and promising to be with him from now on the exact same way he is always there for them every day which allows Steven to eventually return back to his human form.
  • When Steven decides to leave, she tries to convince him that if this is about running away from his past, it's something he can't and shouldn't do.
  • She bids farewell to Steven alongside Bismuth and Peridot, accepting that he needs to leave to find himself and become his own person.

What Prevents Her From Being Pure Good?[]

  • When she fused with Jasper to prevent her from harming Steven and the other Crystal Gems, she still went a little too far by torturing her for months. Even if Jasper was a terrible person with all the horrible things she did, Lapis still went too far with her punishment for it to be considered completely deserved. Lapis herself even outright admits to Steven that it felt good to finally harm Jasper back for all she had put her through and have someone to take her anger out on. Even after she mellows out, her taking her anger out on Jasper and taking some satisfaction on it makes her too lethal for PG.
    • However, it is worth noting that Lapis felt extreme remorse for this specific moment as it actually made her subconsciously want to reunite with Jasper and is why she refused to fuse as Malachite again since she didn't want to put even Jasper through that cycle. Lapis also had to constantly resist Jasper's urge to control Malachite whose willpower was just as strong as her own, meaning that she was likely battling over control of their fusion while underneath the very bottom of the ocean which clearly dealt a blow to her mentality, hence her graphic description to Peridot about how her experience of being trapped underwater for several months felt like. So, while her lethality is preventing enough for PG it was still quite understandable given her situation.
