Kouta is the deuteragonist in the Elfen Lied series.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- While Lucy, Kurama and Bando done more admirable acts than him, they are unfair comparisons due to Lucy being a Diclonius with superhuman abilities, Kurama being a scientist with a lab to work with and Bando is a trained solider with a gun while Kouta has almost no resources and the admirable standard of Elfen Lied is extremely low with heroism not common which allow him to stand out. While he was originally bog-standard in early arcs he crosses the Goodness Zone enough to qualify in later arcs.
- While he had some instances of lashing out, it was due to PTSD making them Heating-Up Periods and his anger to Lucy is understandable due to her talking the lives of his father & sister and was willingly gonna give her an second chance anyways.
- While he has a daughter named Nyu Jr. who resemble resembles his cousin Yuka, it relies too much on up to reader to decide to say he ended up with her due to the context being too vague to tell see it as a corrupting factor.
- While some of acts revolved around Lucy were unintentionally admirable due his memory loss at first, once he regained them this prevention is nullified when he now became aware of them.
Both Adaptions[]
- He would take in Lucy after being convinced by Yuka and even later when told how dangerous she is by many others. Despite this, he still helped her out of kindness even when he got his memory back later on.
- He would attempt to find Lucy and bring her back knowing he had a feeling of Professor Kakuzawa being untrustworthy despite knowing the consequences.
- He would help Mayu seek asylum from her abusive mother & stepfather, Nozomi from her strict father and Nana to find a place to call home when they had nowhere to go in the Mapple Inn due to his kindness towards girls due to reminder of his deceased sister.
- He had a hunch on Mayu's mother and knew she wasn't a good person when she gave Mayu custody to him so has some awareness of Mayu's situation here.
- He would have a major influence on Lucy that manage to help her manage to reform for the better as it prevented her from exterminating humankind long ago and manage to somewhat give Lucy an second chance despite her claiming the lives of his father & sister due to feel too empathetic towards Lucy.
Anime[]
- He would attempt to protect Lucy from the Diclonous Research Institution soldiers despite him being just an normal human boy.
- He was willing to forgive Lucy in the Anime but was was angry at her which is still understandable.
Manga[]
- He would protect his friends from Special Assault Team and while he did hold Doctor Nousou at gunpoint it was to pressure Agent to back down from harming his friends and Nousou is far from innocent anyways, so it doesn't make him lethal.
- He would give Lucy a second chance making her promise not to kill anymore. It was only ruined thanks to DNA Voice's intervention.
- Despite mistaking Lucy for breaking his promise, he still shielded her from Kurama as despite what she done, he knowingly admitted he would’ve regretted letting her die.
- He would mercy kill Lucy after the DNA Voice took over her body in order to prevent the world and all of humanity from being destroyed. While he shot her with a gun he was filled with a lot of grief and remorse in doing so.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- He has some jerkish moments and mischief towards Yuka, Nana and few others but this is a minor prevention since he is usually kind most of the time.
Trivia[]
- He and Nana are the only Elfen Lied Near Pure Goods as most of the heroic characters have either have too many corrupting factors or not admirable enough/bog-standard.
- He would still be Near Pure Good if just going by the Anime's admirable standard as his influence on Lucy would still allow him to stand out albeit barely enough to avoid being bog-standard.
- Although if it is explicitly confirmed he did end up with Yuka, his Near Pure Good status could be challenged due to incest being a serious corrupting factor but it is usually an common culture thing in Japan to marry their cousins could minimize it’s severely somewhat to an extent but due to it being heavily reliant on the reader to decide, it relies too much on fridge-logic to count here.
