NOTE: This page is only about the original anime series version of Kaworu Nagisa as the Manga and Rebuild versions were not voted Near Pure Good, and thus only information about the original version of Kaworu Nagisa's should be here.

Kaworu Nagisa is an anti-villainous character in the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion and its finale film The End of Evangelion. He is the vessel of the soul of the progenitor of angels, Adam, and implied lover of the protagonist Shinji Ikari.

He is introduced as a replacement pilot following Asuka Langley Sohryu's unsuccessful suicide attempt, who shows incredible syncing capabilities with the EVA unit and develops a deep and emotional relationship with Shinji before being revealed to be the angel Tabris in human form, sent by SEELE under the impression that he would be used to initiate a version of Third Instrumentality that would kill all humans and leave angels the sole remaining species while in reality being used to initiate SEELE's vision of forcibly fusing all humans into a collective consciousness. As a result of his encounters with Shinji and his general love of humanity, he rejects his biological purpose and allows himself to be killed after discovering the entity underneath the NERV premises was Lilith and not Adam.

Following his death, he re-appears in The End of Evangelion, where he returns to his physical body of Adam and re-appears in a spectral form after being fused with Lilith, and appears in a spectral form to Shinji to demonstrate his emotional connection and attachment to him.

He was voiced by Akira Ishida in Japanese, who also voiced Gaara and Makoto Yuki, and by Kyle Sturdivant in English.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

  • Even prior to his heel-face turn, he shows a great degree of respect and admiration towards Lilin art and culture, as well as a desire to understand their emotional conditions.
  • He genuinely loved Shinji, having a major crush on him no matter how twisted and turbulent it was.
  • Additionally, he was polite and genial to everyone, and this was not an act but instead his genuine personality.
  • He provides Shinji with the first genuine and unconditional emotional intimacy he's ever truly had, as Rei, who also cares about him, is too cold and distant to truly express this.
  • Listens to Shinji's emotional concerns and feelings of loathing towards his father without providing any judging towards him, (again, Rei slaps him for insulting his abusive father because she's been emotionally manipulated by Gendo) simply listening and trying to understand him.
  • Gives Rei the revelation of her true identity as the soul of Lilith, which sets her to the path of going against Gendo in favor of Shinji and realizing her own will as an individual person.
  • Upon descending Central Dogma and realizing the creature is Lilith as opposed to Adam, he allows himself to be killed instead of destroying the human species out of love for them and Shinji, having discovered through his interactions with Shinji that he feels that they deserve to inherit the planet over his own children.
  • Compounding onto this and increasing his admirability further, it's indicated that he is being strongly pulled into attempting a fusion that would cause catastrophic consequences, meaning that he's essentially resisting his own genetic programming by doing this, demonstrating himself to be the angel of free will.
  • While his death was ultimately used by SEELE as a way to begin their invasion with the intention of initiating a disastrous third impact that would have fused humanity into an unthinking orange liquid mass that would be incapable of true emotions or advancement, Kaworu was told by them as he was raised by them that they intended to cause a third impact that would result in the full scale annihilation of humankind and the triumph of angels, meaning that he could not have known this was happening at the time.
  • After Adam's soul returns to his body and he and Lilith are fused into a single life form that initiates instrumentality, he re-appears to Shinji by emerging from Lilith's body in order to emotionally calm him.
  • Appears to Gendo during his death, demonstrating that he both condemns his abusive actions towards his son and understands he ran away as a result of his own pain and loneliness.
  • Re-appears to Shinji as he leaves causality, saying that he exists as a representation of "love" within Shinji's heart.
  • Along with Rei/Lilith, grants all life forms the ability to return to their physical forms.
  • While his absence destroys Shinji emotionally to an extent it contributes to him initiating instrumentality, his words to him are ultimately the reason that Shinji rejects them, as Kaworu makes him realize that he has inherent worth and that an existence with "the other", that being people he could never fully understand but that he could still love and cherish, was preferable to one where he wasn't truly able to experience this as a result of being melded into one consciousness.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • Makes Shinji assist in his suicide, which emotionally traumatizes Shinji to a severe extent to the point where it along with Misato and Asuka's death pushes him over into initiating third impact. As a result of Kaworu's confused moral priorities, he didn't recognize how much emotional pain this would actually cause Shinji, but it still devastates him regardless.

Trivia[]

  • His manga version does not count, due to him being far more emotionally detached from humanity and doing a lot of heinous actions (such as gratuitously killing a stray cat or sexually assaulting Shinji) because of it.
  • His Rebuild counterpart is arguably more heroic, and does not make Shinji kill him which has not been ranked yet.
