Katniss Everdeen is the main protagonist of The Hunger Games film series, based on the novel series of the same name by Suzanne Collins. She is a teenage girl who lives in the poverty-stricken District 12, and struggles to provide for her mother and younger sister, Primrose Everdeen.
When Prim is chosen for the Hunger Games, Katniss volunteers to take her place and is put into the arena along with Peeta Mellark, who she develops feelings for.
In the film adaptations, she is portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence, who also played Mystique in the X-Men Films. She was voiced by Nana Mizuki in the Japanese version.
Her Good Ranking[]
What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Good?[]
In General/Background[]
- She brought food for her family by hunting, as her mother is too weak to provide for them. She has also submitted her name for reaping multiple times to save Prim from having to put her name in.
- She loved Prim more than anything and only cares about keeping her safe.
- She only kills tributes in self-defense, such as killing Marvel to protect Rue and killing Cato so he wouldn't get slowly mauled to death in a twistedly climactic fashion. She even refuses to lay a finger on Foxface on the first day (which is mutual as Foxface doesn't want to duel her either) and later seems slightly saddened by her accidentally poisoning herself.
The Hunger Games[]
- She comforted Prim when she had a nightmare.
- Although she said she would cook the cat, she was obviously joking.
- She volunteered to take her sister's place in the Hunger Games.
- She defied the game-makers during her archery demonstration, shooting the apple from a roast pig they were about to eat, which impresses them enough to give her a perfect score.
- She grew to love Peeta Mellark, despite their romance initially being an act for the cameras, and will do anything to protect him.
- She used her wits to survive the game, which destroyed the Careers' food supply to even the odds, and found medicine to cure Peeta's blood poisoning.
- She befriended Rue and tried to protect her and is very saddened by her death, comforting and singing to Rue as she died, which ignited an uprising in District 11. This also causes Thresh to spare her, even if it's a one-time offer.
- She gets the District 12 backpack despite having to face down Clove.
- She helped get Peeta onto the Cornucopia roof to escape from the mutts, unaware Cato was already up there. She also hesitates to shoot him when he himself hesitates to hurt Peeta, eventually shooting his hand when he ultimately swears he can still kill them both.
- She mercy-killed Cato to end his suffering at the hands of mutts, who were slowly gnawing at his hide for nearly a full minute (for the entire night in the books) while he was begging for mercy.
- She refused to kill Peeta even if it meant winning the game, and opted to commit suicide along with him, which forced the game-makers to end the game to have a winner, which caused a public relations disaster and encouraged dissent against the Capital.
Catching Fire[]
- She apologized to District 11 and Rue's family for not being able to save her.
- She freaks out when the Peacekeepers kill an old man for saluting to her.
- She tried to stop the Peacekeepers from flogging Gale, getting beaten herself as a result.
- When training for the Quarter Quell, she called the game-makers out for Seneca Crane's death, even though Crane was her enemy.
- She did her best to protect her allies in the Quarter Quell, trying unsuccessfully to save Mags.
- She destroyed the arena of the Quarter Quell by blowing up the force-field, which allowed her to escape and sparked a rebellion across Panem.
Mockingjay: Part 1[]
- She agreed to help Alma Coin with her rebellion in exchange for certain considerations, such as Prim getting to keep her cat.
- She visited a hospital to boost people's morale. She shot down the Capital ships that bombed the hospital, using the scene to make a video encouraging the rebels.
- She rescued Peeta from President Coriolanus Snow and is able to break him out of his brainwashing, despite knowing he might kill her.
- She opposed Gale's plans to kill innocent people in the rebellion.
Mockingjay: Part 2[]
- She tried to reason with the loyalists in District 2 without resorting to violence, even when she's shot non-lethally while trying to do so.
- She led a team to infiltrate the Capital to take down Snow.
- She's remorseful in the book when she realized she unintentionally killed an unarmed woman during the raid on the Capital.
- She's willing to hear Snow out despite thinking he killed Prim, which allowed Snow to explain that Coin was responsible.
- She decided that she has to stop Coin upon hearing her proposal to restart the Hunger Games with the Capital's children and pretends to support it so that Coin will let her guard down, then assassinates Coin to avenge Prim's death and stop her seizure of power. This directly results in President Snow receiving his comeuppance too since the people are immediately provoked to trample him, which he absolutely deserves.
- It's shown that her voting in favor of Coin's proposal was only to trick her, and she didn't actually support it, so it's not a corrupting factor at all.
- In the epilogue, she takes good care of her new family and comforts her baby when he had a nightmare.
What Prevents Her From Being Pure Good?[]
- She's often cynical and bad-tempered towards others, with Haymitch even pointing out that getting people to like her isn't her strong suit. Although granted, she lives in District 12 so this isn't entirely her fault as no one expects her to properly mature emotionally or especially socially.
- She is lethal, as she uses morally ambiguous tactics in the rebellion, sometimes killing when it's not strictly self-defense.
- She is willing to make some incredibly reckless decisions like not telling Peeta about her agreement with Snow before their District 11 speech, insulting the Gamemakers over Seneca Crane's execution in her private training session, and deceptively voting yes on President Coin's proposal for a new Hunger Games despite there being no guarantee that the idea would end after her death. However, she obviously has no selfish motive for any of these three incidents.
