Kanao Tsuyuri (栗花落 カナヲ) is a major supporting character in the action dark fantasy anime/manga series, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.
Despite her young age, Kanao is a high-ranking member of the Demon Slayer Corps, originally serving as the Tsuguko (successor) of her adoptive older sister Shinobu Kocho. She is a practitioner of the Flower Breathing sword style, a skill passed down to her by her adoptive older sister Kanae Kocho. She is also the love interest of Tanjiro Kamado.
She is voiced by Reina Ueda in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Brianna Knickerbocker in the English version.
Her Good Ranking[]
What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Good?[]
- Although the constant abuse she suffered at the hands of her awful parents caused her to snap and effectively become emotionless, she never developed any resentment towards them.
- She deeply loved both her adoptive sisters and is very grateful that they saved her from the abuse and slavery.
- Formed a bond with Aoi because she was too afraid to hunt demons, as well as a trio of younger girls: Naho, Sumi, and Kiyo.
- Took to slaying demons because she wasn't any good at housework and fought alongside Shinobu and Kanae.
- At Kanae's funeral after she had been murdered by Doma, Kanao was deeply upset that she couldn't even cry for her fallen sister, although none of the mourners judged her.
- After Kanae's death, she trained hard to become the successor to Shinobu, who was the current Insect Hashira.
- Accompanied Shinobu to Mount Natagumo and sent relief for the slayers injured in battle and reassured them they could rest.
- Although she did attempt to hunt down Nezuko and kill her, she was under orders from Shinobu and didn't know she wasn't evil. However, when she saw that Nezuko wasn't fighting back, she started to have doubts on her orders.
- When a Kasugai Crow ordered her to instead take Nezuko to Demon Slayer Headquarters, she accepts the order and instead restrains Nezuko.
- Helped Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke recover from their wounds and train harder as demon slayers.
- Didn't seem annoyed by Zenitsu's rather creepy obsession with girls.
- When Tanjiro thanks her for her help, Kanao says there is no need and that she was just following Shinobu's orders.
- After Tanjiro tells her that she shouldn't need to use a coin to determine her actions, Kanao is genuinely touched and begins to contemplate about herself.
- When Tengen Uzui attempted to kidnap Aoi and Naho to use for his mission, Kanao initially wonders if she should flip her coin to choose what to do, but remembering Tanjiro's words, she finally makes a decision for herself and prevents Uzui from leaving with them.
- As soon as Tanjiro woke up after his battle with Daki and Gyutaro, Kanao immediately rushed over to his bedside and exclaimed about how happy she was that he woke up.
- When everyone started arguing while Tanjiro was trying to sleep, Kanao ended up yelling at them to be quiet so he could get some rest.
- Assists Shinobu in her plan to kill Doma, even though it would mean Shinobu would die too. Although she's upset with this, she accepts it because it's what Shinobu wants and she doesn't have a long time to live anyway.
- Fights Doma to avenge both her adoptive sisters.
- When Inosuke learns Doma killed his mother, Kanao attempts to calm him down to prevent him from getting killed.
- Both she and Inosuke successfully manage to kill Doma and avenge their loved ones as well as the hundreds of other people he's killed.
- After remembering that she wasn't able to cry for Kanae at her funeral, she begins crying at Shinobu's death and asks if she did good, for her adopted sisters' spirits to assure her she's done well.
- She is able to make her own decisions and choices by then because of Tanjiro’s help.
- When Tanjiro and the Hashira are fighting Muzan, she, Zenitsu, and Inosuke step in to help and fight with them to finally end his terror.
- When she becomes the only conscious slayer left, she desperately tries to will herself into fighting despite being heavily injured.
- Cries when she sees a human Nezuko desperately trying to get through to Tanjiro, who has been turned into a demon by Muzan.
- Puts her own safety at risk to successfully cure Tanjiro, even if she gets stabbed in the stomach. She decided to use the remaining serum that Shinobu and Tamayo made that turns demons back into humans and her final form even when she was already blind in one eye after her fight with Doma using her final form. This proves she was willing to sacrifice her remaining one eye in order to protect her loved ones annd how she thought that they were more important to her than herself. This also finally erases Muzan's evil spirit for good and ends hundreds of years of demons eating humans.
- Cries tears of joy when Tanjiro is reversed to normal, showing how much she cares for him.
What Prevents Her From Being Pure Good?[]
- She displays her hatred for Doma by taunting him over his inability to feel any sort of emotion and even mockingly asks him why he was even born. While this is understandable as he killed both her adopted sisters and is a monstrous and vile demon, this is still too harsh for her to qualify her as Pure Good as she shows a more sadistic side when mocking Doma and Pure Goods can’t be sadistic.
