| “ | Sometimes, people don't really say what they're really thinking. When you capture the right moment, it says more. | „ |

| “ | I just ... I don't want you to forget that I'm here. And I'll always be here. No matter what. Because you're my brother. And I love you. And there is nothing in this world, okay? Absolutely nothing that will ever change that. You got that? | „ |
| ~ Jonathan to Will |
Jonathan Byers is one of the deuteragonists of Netflix's Stranger Things franchise. He is the older brother of Will Byers and the eldest son of Joyce and Lonnie Byers. After his brother's dissapearance, he would take matters into his own hands and launch his own search for him which led him to team up with Nancy Wheeler in her search for her missing friend Barb. Together the two would develop a romantic relationship and plan to stop the Demogorgon later with the help of Steve Harrington, later working with Nancy and Murray to make a tape exposing Hawkins Lab's ambigious acts and closing it for good.
He is portrayed by Charlie Heaton.

- He and Nancy went looking for the Demogorgon after Will's funeral and he saved Nancy when she was trying to escape the Upside Down through a portal in a tree.

- He and Nancy worked together so they could expose the threat of Hawkins Lab, by recording Owens and working with Murray to reveal a twisted truth of the actual events so the lab could be shut down without the world learning of the Upside Down.
- He helped Will transmit his message in Morse Code, which led to Eleven closing the gate, saving millions of lives in the process.
- He went with Nancy and his mother to exorcise Will and force the Mind Flayer out of him.
Season 3[]
- He comforted Nancy over her mistreatment from the workers at the Hawkins Post.
- Despite his own doubts, he tried to help Nancy pursue a story regarding Mrs. Driscoll's rat infestation (unknowingly becoming involved with the Upside Down again).
- Though he snapped at Nancy it was slightly justifiable given that she pressured him to participate in her story which ended up costing him his means to support his family. He felt bad for this and later at the hospital he apologized to her for his reaction.

- He and Dustin continued to try to track Hopper down and after being called by Joyce and informed Will and Robin had gone out to fix the "flux capacitator", he told her the truth.
- He and Murray helped Nancy test out shooting the Telemetry Tracker out of a shotgun.
- He helped boobytrap the Turnbow house and later set the Demogorgon on fire after Nancy shot it with the tracker, tracking it alongside Steve, Dustin and Nancy to the old barn.
- After following the Demo into the Upside Down with Nancy, Steve and Dustin, they would call Hopper and El to verify their safety and request their help unlodging Steve's car from the wall. After Dustin figured out the wall may have a connection to Hawkins Lab, the group would set out there.
- He saves Steve's life during the final stage of the Party's plan.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- He slightly fails the admirable standards of the series to Eddie Munson and Steve Harrington who have done more to directly stop the Upside Down, and saved more lives while having comparable resources.
- He is dishonest, hiding the fact that he doesn't want to go to college with Nancy and not telling her when the chance presented itself, or lying to Eleven that the weed he smokes with Argyle is good because the plants were "from the Earth." Even when Nancy confronted him on his lie in Hawkins Lab he kept denying it and ducking the topic, avoiding it throughout the search and really only managed to tell her while they unwinded moments before their deaths. This number of lies and disagreements is partly what led them to break up after surviving and ending up going their separate ways.
- He took photographs of Steve's house party without their permission in a way that equated to stalking. In particular, one photograph showed Nancy in a semi-nude state. He never fully apologizes to Nancy for this and instead it lead them to have arguments during their first team-up.
- He can be wrathful and needlessly violent as shown when he beats Steve in ferocity and savagery, although it is understandable, because Steve insulted his mother and said offensive comments about his brother (who was missing at the time). Jonathan's reaction was still a bit too extreme as he kept ruthlessly beating him even after he was on the ground and bleeding heavily, to the point he was arrested due to the severity of the assault, even hitting a cop in the process.
