“ | Flying is… It's freedom and not having to rely on anyone. Don't you want that? | „ |
~ Jewel teaching Blu about freedom |
“ | It's about time this family got a little air under our wings. Look at us. iPods, TV. Pancakes? We're not people, we're birds. We have to get out into the wild and be birds, Blu. Let the kids connect to their roots. Show them what I had. They need this. We need this. | „ |
~ Jewel's plan to get the family to the Amazon Forest |
Jewel is the deuteragonist of the Rio franchise, being the deuteragonist of Rio and a major character in its sequel, Rio 2.
She is one of the rare blue macaws, and was once thought to be one of the last two in the world, alongside Blu, a domesticated Macaw owned by a woman from the United States. When she and Blu and brought together to continue the species, she tries to have him help her escape, as she has a much more free and less domesticated mindset than Blu. Throughout their adventures at Rio de Janeiro, they bond and get really close, and are forced to fight illegal animal traffickers and their sadistic cockatoo, Nigel, from capturing many birds in Rio and selling them in the black market.
She was voiced by Anne Hathaway.
Her Good Ranking[]
What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Good?[]
Rio[]
- She works with Blu to help save their species, though she was more interested in being free at the start.
- She helps defend the Birds by fighting off the Marmosets that Nigel sends to capture her and Blu.
- She saved Blu when Mauro tried attacking him.
- Was worried about Blu's safety when they were almost getting killed in Luiz's machine.
- Although she hated Blu when they first met due to the fact that he couldn't fly and was raised by a human and constantly mocked him for it, she starts warming up to him as the film goes on. This is also true with everyone else (Linda, Tulio, Rafael, Pedro and Nico), as she started out hating them but eventually befriended them, abandoning her selfishness and misanthropic view on humans.
- After Blu frees her from her cage, she helps him free all the other captive birds.
- She comforts Blu when they're about to fly out of the plane, saying they'll figure something out.
- She stands up to Nigel when he chokes Blu, although Nigel ends up causing her to break her wing.
- Gives Blu the kiss that unleashes his ability to fly for the first time in his life and is very grateful for him saving her.
Rio 2[]
- She cares for her kids, Carla Bia and Tiago, and acts like a great mother to them.
- Upon learning that there are more Spix macaws, she decides that they need to find them.
- What to get her kids to a more bird friendly, nature like environment, saying that they shouldn't live like people, as she fears that if they don't take this chance, they'll never know what wildlife is like.
- She is very happy to see her long-lost family and friends in the Amazon Forest and tries to get her family used to the scenery.
- She is happy whenever Blu and her father seem to be getting along and asks Blu not to be intimidated by him.
- Thanks Blu for agreeing to go to the amazon, despite his concerns.
- Helped save the Amazon from loggers, by getting her father trust in Blu, and then participating in the group attack of all Blue Macaws and other Amazon animals on them.
What Prevents Her From Being Pure Good?[]
- She has some jerkish moments, mostly in the first film when she was first introduced. These moments are not completely subverted in the second film, notably being inconsiderate of Blu's problems while in the Amazon (even accusing him of being selfish without fully understanding his perspective).
- Even though she largely abandoned it, she still has a bit of misanthropy in the second film, such as when she showed disgust for Blu bringing his lifestyle onto their kids and narrow-mindedly opted to keep the blue macaws a secret from even Linda and Tulio, despite knowing they intended to ensure her species’ conservation.
Trivia[]
- She, Roberto, Rafael, and Nico are the only Rio character to be Near Pure Good. Additionally, she was the first Blue Sky Studios character to be approved as Near Pure Good.
