You were my rock. You made me what I am.
~ Hiroki to Kayoko.

Hiroki Sugimura a major protagonist in the novel, manga, and film Battle Royale. He was a member of Class 9-B and an expert on martial arts, who wanted to prove himself as strong while also trying to avoid unnecessary fights.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

  • Despite being a martial artist and a very strong fighter, Hiroki refused to hurt others unless it was necessary, and would hold his strength back even when people were humiliating and abusing him because he didn't want to hurt them.
  • When Shuya was about to get hit by a group of thugs, Hiroki saved his life and defeated the thugs.
  • Despite him abusing and humiliating Hiroki just to prove that he was better than him, he was shocked when Kazuo ripped the judo master's eye off and squished it.
  • He adopted an abandoned kitten and took care of it despite not having time to do it and named it Fugetsu on Kayoko's honor.
  • He brought Noriko back to her seat after she was shot in the knee by Yonemi Kamon.
  • After finding Chigusa nearly dead on the ground after she was fatally wounded by Mitsuko, Hiroki begged her to not die on him, and cried and apologized when she asked if he ever loved her, due to him being in love with Kayoko, and still called her his best friend.
  • Despite being angry over Mitsuko killing Chigusa, Hiroki still refused to kill her and even gave her a chance at redemption before she refused and tried to seduce and kill him. He was also shocked when he found out that Mitsuko was sexually abused by her stepfather.
  • He decided to help Shogo, Noriko, and Shuya in their goal to help other people during the program and give them hope that they together could stop it.
  • Even after finding out that Oda killed Hirono, Hiroki still tried to give the former a chance at redemption, although he refused.
  • When about to get killed by Kazuo, Hiroki saved Shuya and helped him in trying to defeat Kazuo.
  • Saved Shuya's life again by brigging him to a beach when he was about to drown and gave him to the group in the lighthouse to take care of his injuries.
  • He convinced Kayoko to not give up to despair and convinced her to not allow the program to corrupt her.
  • When Kazuo appeared and tried to kill him and Kayoko, Hiroki protected her while also getting beaten and heavily injured and swore that he would protect Kayoko no matter what.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • Despite passing the general standards, he fails the in-story standards to Shuya, Noriko, and Shogo, who did more admirable acts than him, with Noriko having lower recourses than Hiroki. Despite this, Hiroki is more admirable than a majority of the characters in Battle Royale, so it's a minor prevention.
  • He has two lethal moments, the first is when he threatened to shoot Oda's legs off when he was about to get his pistol so he could kill him, and the second is when he told himself to show no mercy towards Kazuo and to not hold back. However, both of these moments are minor as well since Oda was going to kill him and he only said to himself to show no mercy towards Kazuo because he was going to kill both him and Kayoko, and he had already given Kazuo a chance to leave without a fight.

Trivia[]

  • Hiroki is so far, the only Battle Royale hero to be Near Pure Good.
  • Only the manga version of Hiroki qualifies, as the film and novel versions are killed off early and thus were unable to commit admirable acts that put them over the baseline of the story, although he is still a hero in there as well and has a similar kind-hearted personality.
