The Hellboy series is a comic book series featuring the character of the same name. Its first appearance was a four-page, black and white comic written by Mike Mignola and scripted by John Byrne and published by Dark Horse Comics in San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2 (19 August 1993), which was used to promotional piece for Hellboy's debut miniseries Seed of Destruction.
When Seed of Destruction concluded, Mike Mignola performed scripting duties on the comics and wrote every Hellboy story himself, except They That Go Down to the Sea in Ships which he co-wrote with Joshua Dysart.
History[]
Hellboy is the child of the witch Sarah Hughes and the demon Azzael, the unwilling Harbinger of the Apocalypse, Anung Un Rama and a former Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense agent. He serves as the main protagonist of the comic book series of the same name.

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- While there are times where he’s shown to be lethal, such as when he murdered a group of giants or killed Grigori Rasputin, some of these instances are justified since had no control of his demonic form, and after coming to terms with his heritage after the events of Hellboy in Hell he's able to fully control it.
- Even with his demonic origins, he has a genuinely good heart and love for other humans.
- Possesses a desire to do the right thing and an iron will.
- Has continuously rejected his “purpose” to bring the apocalypse.
Hellboy[]
- When approached by the Osiris Club to slay the Saint Leonard, his spilled blood in the battle resulted in grown lilies confirming his good nature.
- Despite Aickman manipulating him, Hellboy begrudgingly completed Vold's chosen tasks.
- Embarked on a mission in Ireland in 1959 to rescue a baby Alice Monaghan by bearing a corpse to its final resting place.
- Brings Liz Sherman a lollipop and eventually becomes her closest friend, breaking her isolation and making her come out of her shell to adjust to life at the Bureau. For the next six years, Hellboy also made sure to check on Liz regularly.
- When the Conqueror worm controls Roger’s mind and tells Hellboy to destroy him, he refuses and motivates Roger to fight back at the manipulation.
- Stays with his old friend Harry Middleton in England for a month.
- Travels with Tom Ferrell to find Cora and bury Tom’s father on the mountain to the church.
- Is shown to be worthy of bearing Excalibur and takes it up to prevent Nimue’s holocaust of blood.
- Saves a girl from Asmodeus, a demon who’s been stealing women for some time, by shooting the demon and catching the girl. He later defeats Asmodeus and goes to protect the girl.
- While he did kill the evil luchador Camazotz alone, he states it was the only thing he could do for him, and it didn’t make him feel better about killing him. Furthermore, once Camazotz reverts to his human form, he thanks Hellboy in Spanish as part of his last words, where Hellboy later buries the dead brother causing the luchadores to leave him.
- He tries to put Gruagach, a creature hanging from a tree out of his misery, by fulfilling the creature’s wish to kill him, even though it was stated by Merlin that Gruagach won’t die.
- Saves a man’s life in a university museum by stopping the mummies brought to life and allowing the man to escape.
- Frees a vampire spirit from a little girl, which releases all the evil she held in a little girl and allows her to finally at peace.
- He saves all of England from a Ogdru Jahad possessing Nimue in return for his life.
Hellboy and the B.P.R.D[]
- Helps a confused man who sold his soul for a magic whip.
- Along with Abe Sapien and Liz Sherman, he defeats Grigori Rasputin and eventually saves the entire world.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- He can often come across as brutish, rude, sarcastic and short-tempered which he himself states this causes him to "do stupid things". While some of these instances are justified and understandable, it makes him a minor arrogant and a bit of a jerk.
Trivia[]
- Hellboy was originally rejected from being NPG and proposed as IA due to being rather lethal, but when it was revealed he had no control of his demonic form, he was later accepted as NPG.
- So far, Hellboy is the only Near Pure Good character from his own comic series.
- He is also the only Near Pure Good character published by Dark Horse so far.
- His live-action film and animated counterparts have not yet been approved as Near Pure Good.
- Hellboy and his comic books were said to have drawn inspiration from Bram Stoker’s famed novel Dracula, which is one of Mignola’s favorites. Ironically, despite Hellboy being Near Pure Good, the original depiction of Dracula is currently listed as Pure Evil.
- Originally, Mike Mignola intended Hellboy in Hell to mark the end of Hellboy's story after the final issue, but after a few months, an issue of BPRD showed Hellboy was coming back and Mignola released a statement contradicting his earlier statement by saying Hellboy will indeed return for the apocalypse promised in King of Fear. Had the series ended after Hellboy in Hell, there's a possibility that Hellboy could've been approved as Pure Good.
