~ Heimdall before teleporting the Hulk in Infinity War. |
Heimdall is a major character in the Thor trilogy of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and a minor character in Avengers: Infinity War.
He is Asgard's Gatekeeper, who keeps the planet safe by monitoring the Bifrost (the magical bridge responsible for allowing Asgardians to come in and out) and using its sword, Hofund, to activate or deactivate it whenever needed. He is extremely loyal to Asgard's King and Allfather, Odin Borson, and a close friend to his son, Thor Odinson, sometimes even acting as a moral compass to him.
After Loki Laufeyson took over Asgard by posing as Odin, Heimdall was falsely accused of treason and banished from Asgard. Even then, he'd return when Hela Odinson, Thor and Loki's half-sister, escaped Odin's prison for her, Hel, after his death. He'd steal Hofund and protect the Asgardians from Hela's army, eventually fighting against her alongside Thor, Valkyrie, Hulk and Loki, and after making Ragnarök happen to defeat her, attempting to find another home for the Asgardians.
He was portrayed by Idris Elba.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
In general[]
- He's been protecting and watching over Asgard for millennia.
- He transports heroes and Asgardians multiple times to where they need to go across the Thor movies.
- While he is undoubtedly serious, even coming across a Game Changer in the first movie, since the movies became darker and Heimdall's character more light-hearted, it isn't a problem anymore.
Thor[]
- Sent Odin to save Thor, his brother and his friends from Jotunheimn against the Frost Giants.
- Broke his oath of loyalty by allowing Sif and the Warriors Three go to Midgard and save Thor.
- He tried to stop Loki from destroying Jotunheimn, only to be frozen.
Thor: The Dark World[]
- Warned Thor he lost track of Jane Foster, leading to him go looking for her.
- Stroked down an invisible Dark Elf ship, and after seeing there was a whole army coming, he activated Aagard's defenses.
- Gave Thor some comfort after Frigga's death.
- Created a distraction for Odin to allow Thor, Loki and Jane Foster to leave Asgard and confront the Dark Elves, even being willing to be taken into custody for these actions (something that likely was undone after Malekith's defeat).
Thor: Ragnarok[]
- While he hid himself once Loki took over and banished him, he came back after Hela's return and hostile takeover in Asagard.
- He stole Hofund, stopping Hela from having access to any of the other Nine Realms, preventing her from going on a bloody rampage over them.
- He stood up and protect hundreds to thousands of innocent and defenseless Asagardians, fighting Hela's undead army to do it, thus saving everybody's lives until Thor came back.
- During Thor's time in Sakaar, he helped Thor by giving him advice in the form of visions, saying, just like Odin, that "Agard is not a place, but a people", something that allowed him to recover his electric powers even without Mjølnir later on.
- Upon Thor's return, he helps Loki, Korg, Miek and multiple other runaways to save all of the remaining Asgardians while Thor, Hulk and Valkyrie fought Hela herself.
- Happily announced Thor as Asgard's King and was ready to help him decide a new way for the Asgardians to live after Asgard's destruction, only for the celebration to be interrupted by Thanos's arrival.
Avengers: Infinity War[]
- He helped fight against the Black Order offscreen, and while this is shown to have failed miserably, New Asgard's existence proves many Asgardians escaped, meaning Thor, Loki, Hulk and Heimdall's efforts likely allowed them to hold Thanos's troops back enough for some to escape.
- After Thanos defeated Hulk and was presumably about to kill him, he used the last of his strength to summon a Bifrost to send the Avenger to Earth before the Mad Titan killed him afterwards. This allowed Earth's heroes to prepare for Thanos as he sent the Black Order for the Time and Mind Stones on the planet, and eventually restoring the victims of the Blip, as Hulk was essential to using the Nano Gauntlet powered by the Stones.
- While he had no way of knowing exactly what would happen, his intentions still prevent this from being considered Fridge Brilliance, since he was aware of Hulk's potential (and the Avengers to an extension since they and Thor thwarted Loki's invasion) after he helped save the Asgardians from Hela, and wanted to allow the Avengers to have an upper hand against Thanos, which succeeded, even if the results of saving half of the universe came five years later.
Thor: Love and Thunder[]
- Welcomed Jane Foster into Valhalla after her death, congratulating her over her heroic actions of defeating Gorr, the God Butcher, and guiding her to Valhalla's feasting halls.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- His high resources, namely his magical abilities, Asgardian physiology, great knowledge and intelligence and mainly, the power to see and hear things over distances of billions of lightyears, makes him fail the MCU's admirable standards to some heroes with less resources than him, such as Iron Man and Black Widow, the latter sacrificing herself to save half of the universe and the former sacrificing himself to defeat Thanos and his army. However, Heimdall's actions of protecting Asgard from Hela as well as stopping her from attacking the Nine Realms, supporting Thor in stopping Malekith's omnicide, and ensuring Thanos's defeat through saving Hulk, makes this prevention minor.
