Hachiman Hikigaya is the male main protagonist of Oregairu. He's a 17 year old highschool student and the second member of the service club next to founder Yukino. He's a cynical loner with a high level of intelligence and excellent philosophical and analytical skills.

He is voiced by Takuya Eguchi in Japanese who also voiced Loid Forger in Spy X Family, and by Adam Gibbs in English.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]

  • He risks his life to save a dog running on the street, getting hit by a car instead. He survives but spends 3 weeks in hospital, not going to school. It turns out the dog was Yui's.
  • Despite being bullied and ostracized in his past due to his social awkwardness, and having developed cynicism and distrustfulness for this, he's still a selfless, good-hearted guy who will help anyone in need, though he does have his methods to do it.
  • He's ultimately very caring and sensitive to the feelings of others, and opens up to others, revealing his kinder side and progressively lessening his overly cynical past beliefs, thanks to his relationships with those close to him, especially Yukino, Yui, his little sister Komachi and also his teacher Shizuka Hiratsuka and friends Totsuka and Zaimokuza.
  • He's eternally willing to commit social suicide, namely sacrificing his reputation, self-esteem and well-being for the sake of others. There is literally a list of his "social suicides" done.
    • During the Chiba village summer camp, Hachiman planned to break the relationships of a lonely little girl, Rumi Tsurumi, with her peers, who hated and badmouthed her for reasons unexplained. So, his plan was to convince his classmates Miura, Tobe and Hayama to act as delinquents, threatening the children, with the goal to reveal their selfish nature to each other. The girls quarrel with each other and end up sacrificing Rumi.
    • At the meeting of the committee members for the planning of the cultural festival, Hachiman suggests a slogan harshly critical on people who were slacking off, especially the candidate Minami Sagami and her friends. While this caused him to be viewed poorly from most committee members, this definitely persuaded all members to start working seriously.
    • At the culture festival, Hachiman berated Sagami - who was hiding to avoid returning to her duties, playing the part of a shy and insecure girl who was afraid - with harsh words, and sneered at her unworthiness and incompetence, with Hayato slamming him against the wall for that. When Sagami returned, the committee members were disgusted and thought that Sagami became a victim of Hachiman's behavior. While some, for example Hayama and Yukino, were aware of Hachiman's true goal, he became the butt-monkey of the next school trip, with almost everyone continuing to see him as a creep.
    • During said trip, Hachiman faked a love confession to classmate Hina Ebina in front of Tobe, the student who liked her and who was about to do so, much to the shock of all the other students who saw the scene and Tobe himself. Hina answered she was not yet ready to date anyone and would reject any confession. In this way, Tobe's feelings were rejected without harming their friendship, saved again by Hachiman. Thanks to that, Hachiman's bad reputation started to fade away.
  • That said, after seeing how hurt Yukino and Yui were because of his self-destructive behavior, Hachiman stopped self-harm for the sake of others, and mostly became dedicated to his true friendships, as well as accepting to protect Yukino when she confessed to him, allowing her to enter into his life and belong to him.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]

  • While he truly is a kind person at heart, his methods of helping others are often harsh, and he can be deliberately insensitive, with Yukino being better at dealing with the emotional side of the problems they have to solve. So, while the intention is noble, to be Pure Good he should use more pleasant and diplomatic ways, generally speaking. He also can be a minor arrogant due to his cynicism, with a tendency to look down on others and having a dismissive attitude, though this lessens through character development.
